Can Cats Eat Arugula? Safe Portions, Salad Risks, and What to Do

A small taste of plain, washed arugula is generally okay for cats, but it is not nutritionally necessary. Keep salad dressings, onion, garlic, and seasonings away.

Yes—most cats can try a tiny amount of plain, washed arugula as an occasional nibble. It is not a necessary or beneficial addition to a cat’s diet, and the leaf is different from a dressed salad: onion, garlic, oil, and seasonings can make shared salad unsafe. Keep your cat’s complete and balanced food as the dietary foundation.

Is arugula toxic to cats?

Arugula itself is described as non-toxic to cats in veterinarian-reviewed consumer guidance from Catster. That supports offering a small taste, not treating arugula as a health food. There is no established clinical dose or feeding schedule for cats.

The bigger concern may be what is on or mixed in with the greens. Cornell lists onions among foods that can be toxic to pets, and the FDA advises contacting a veterinarian or pet poison-control center when a pet may have eaten a potentially dangerous item. Avoid salad containing onion or garlic, as well as dressing, oil, and seasoning.

How much arugula can a cat eat?

Catster’s veterinarian-reviewed article suggests one small leaf—or half a small leaf for a smaller cat—once or twice per week. Treat this as a conservative suggestion from a secondary source, not a validated veterinary portion or a universal prescription. A cat does not need arugula to meet nutritional needs.

How to offer a small taste

  1. Wash a plain arugula leaf to remove dirt and reduce pesticide residue.
  2. Chop it into small pieces so it is easier to eat.
  3. Offer a tiny amount by itself, without dressing, oil, or seasoning.
  4. Do not make it a regular dietary staple or replace any of your cat’s complete and balanced food.

Why arugula is not a dietary necessity

Cats are obligate carnivores. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine explains that “they rely on nutrients found only in animal products.” Arugula does not replace those nutrients and is not needed for a balanced feline diet. There is no established evidence here that feeding arugula provides a health benefit or prevents urinary stones.

What if my cat already ate arugula?

A small amount of plain leaf

A small nibble of plain arugula is generally not a reason to panic. Monitor your cat for digestive upset, since eating too much plant matter may cause vomiting or diarrhea.

Arugula from a salad or a larger amount

Check whether the salad included onion, garlic, dressing, oil, or seasoning. If your cat ate onion or garlic, or you suspect exposure to another potentially dangerous ingredient, contact your veterinarian or a pet poison-control center promptly. Contact a veterinarian if vomiting or diarrhea persists, or if your cat becomes lethargic or shows other concerning signs.

When to ask your veterinarian first

Ask your veterinarian before introducing arugula if your cat has a history of urinary disease or another health condition that affects diet. Advice about a food being non-toxic does not establish that it is appropriate for every cat.

Optional greens cats may prefer

For cats that seek plant matter, Cornell suggests oat grass, catnip, or catmint as optional alternatives. These are not nutritional requirements; Texas A&M veterinarian Lori Teller notes that cat grass is not required when a cat eats a well-balanced food, though many cats enjoy it. Let your cat’s interest guide whether you offer one, and keep it separate from any effort to meet nutritional needs.
