Indoor vs. Outdoor Cats: How It Affects Life Expectancy

Unrestricted outdoor access exposes cats to hazards that can shorten life, but research does not establish a universal lifespan gap between indoor and outdoor cats. Learn what the evidence says, how indoor welfare needs matter, and safer ways to provide outdoor access.

Where a cat lives can affect its exposure to injury, infection, poisoning, and other hazards, but there is no scientifically reliable rule that gives every indoor or outdoor cat a set lifespan. Unrestricted outdoor access adds preventable risks; indoor life can reduce them, but cats still need opportunities for play, climbing, hiding, stalking, and foraging. Controlled outdoor access, such as a catio, secure fence, or harness, can offer a middle ground.

Do indoor cats live longer than outdoor cats?

On average, unrestricted outdoor access is associated with a shorter lifespan, particularly because it exposes cats to road traffic, animal attacks, infectious disease, and poisoning. But the difference is not a fixed number: a supervised cat spending time in a garden does not face the same risks as one roaming near busy roads, farms, or woodland.

A University of California, Davis study examined 3,108 cats that underwent necropsy between 1989 and 2019. Among cats of all ages with known housing status, median age at death was:

Housing category Median age at death
Indoor only 9.43 years
Indoor/outdoor 9.82 years
Outdoor only 7.25 years

The outdoor-only group had a statistically shorter lifespan than the indoor-only and indoor/outdoor groups. These figures come from Kent et al.’s study in PLOS ONE, not a random sample of all owned cats: the cats were submitted to a veterinary teaching hospital for necropsy, so cats that died at home or were euthanized elsewhere may be underrepresented.

The study’s housing categories were also broad. “Outdoor only” included cats identified as outdoor, including cats with barn or garage access; “indoor/outdoor” covered varying exposure, from occasional escape or enclosure access to cats described as primarily outdoor. These categories make direct comparisons difficult. When researchers looked only at cats that had lived to at least one year, median age at death was about 10 years in all three groups, and differences were not statistically significant. The findings support greater overall risk for outdoor-only cats, but do not prove that every indoor cat outlives every indoor/outdoor cat.

Why outdoor access can reduce life expectancy

Vehicle collisions

Road traffic is a serious hazard, especially for young cats. In a 2025 UK cohort of 2,444 cats, road-traffic accidents accounted for 45.6% of deaths by age eight and 49.6% of deaths among cats aged one to six, according to Taylor et al. Those percentages describe that UK cohort, not every country or cat population.

Fights, predators, and trauma

Outdoor cats may encounter dogs, coyotes, foxes, wildlife, or territorial cats. Bites and scratches can cause abscesses, eye injuries, fractures, and internal trauma. A cat that escapes an attack may still suffer complications from an untreated wound.

Male and young cats may engage more often in activities that increase injury risk. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association’s 2024 position statement recommends monitoring these cats particularly closely when they have outdoor access.

Infectious disease and parasites

Contact with unfamiliar cats, bite wounds, shared outdoor spaces, fleas, ticks, and contaminated soil or water can increase exposure to infectious disease. Depending on the region and a cat’s contacts, risks can include feline leukemia virus (FeLV), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), intestinal parasites, and other pathogens.

Outdoor access does not mean a cat will contract these diseases. Vaccination, testing, parasite prevention, neutering, and reducing fights can lower risk, but cannot remove it completely.

Poisoning and environmental accidents

A roaming cat may encounter antifreeze, rodenticides, pesticides, toxic plants, contaminated water, or food left outside. Cats can also become trapped in sheds, garages, vehicles, or other buildings, or be taken in by someone who assumes they are strays.

Microchipping is especially important for cats that spend time outside. A safely fitted breakaway collar with visible identification can provide another route home; check it regularly.

Indoor cats are not automatically healthier

Keeping a cat indoors removes many external dangers, but a monotonous or poorly managed home environment can create problems. Indoor cats may become sedentary and gain excess weight, which is associated with conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, and urinary problems. Constant access to a full food bowl can be unhelpful when a cat has few opportunities to move or forage.

Stress is another consideration. A cat may live safely indoors yet experience anxiety because of conflict with another pet, too few hiding places, unpredictable handling, noise, or an unclean litter area. Inadequate stimulation can contribute to scratching, aggression, overgrooming, inappropriate urination, and other behavior changes.

An indoor-only cat needs more than food, water, and a litter box. The 2024 FelineVMA position statement recommends providing opportunities for:

  • Play that imitates hunting, such as chasing a wand toy
  • Foraging, including puzzle feeders or small portions hidden around the home
  • Climbing and observing from elevated perches
  • Hiding and resting in secure, quiet locations
  • Scratching on suitable vertical and horizontal surfaces
  • Positive interaction with people when the cat wants it
  • Clean, accessible toileting areas away from food and water

Rotate toys rather than leaving every toy out permanently, and try several short play sessions instead of expecting one long session to satisfy a cat’s hunting drive. Food puzzles and measured meals can help provide activity and foraging opportunities.

What is a normal life expectancy for a cat?

A 2024 UK life-table study estimated companion-cat life expectancy at birth at 11.74 years, according to Teng et al. A U.S. clinical-data study estimated it at approximately 11.18 years, according to Montoya et al. These are general population benchmarks, not indoor-versus-outdoor comparisons.

Lifespan also depends on genetics, breed, neuter status, body condition, medical care, diet, geography, accidents, and whether a study includes owned, stray, feral, barn, or shelter cats. A healthy, well-supervised cat with secure outdoor access may outlive an indoor cat with obesity and untreated disease.

Claims such as “outdoor cats live only two to five years” or “indoor cats live exactly 10 years longer” should not be treated as established facts. They often mix very different populations and definitions of outdoor living.

  1. A catio: A roofed, escape-resistant enclosure attached to the home or placed in a garden.
  2. A cat-safe fence: A properly designed barrier that prevents climbing or squeezing through gaps.
  3. Harness and leash walks: Suitable for cats that tolerate gradual training. Never drag a frightened cat outdoors or attach a leash to a collar.
  4. Supervised garden time: Keep the cat in sight and remove access to toxic chemicals, poisonous plants, open water, and escape routes.
  5. Daytime-only access: Bringing a roaming cat indoors before dark may reduce some traffic and predator risks, but does not make roaming risk-free.

For any cat with outdoor exposure, ask a veterinarian about vaccination, parasite prevention, and FeLV or FIV testing. The right plan depends on local disease prevalence and the cat’s contact with other animals. Neutering can also reduce roaming and fighting in many cats.

How to choose the right lifestyle for your cat

Consider the cat and the location rather than relying on a universal rule. A busy road, high predator population, frequent neighborhood fights, or a cat that has already been injured outdoors favor indoor-only or controlled access. A secure rural enclosure may be safer than unrestricted access near a highway, but rural areas also bring risks such as farm machinery, poisons, wildlife, and isolated veterinary care.

Some cats adapt readily to indoor life, especially if introduced to it early and given a stimulating environment. Others may show persistent frustration after a sudden change. Transition gradually where possible: increase indoor enrichment, establish predictable feeding and play routines, and consider a catio or harness training. A veterinarian or qualified feline behavior professional can help if the cat develops aggression, persistent vocalization, urine marking, or other signs of distress.

Regardless of lifestyle, routine preventive care matters. Keep the cat at a healthy body weight, arrange regular veterinary examinations, monitor changes in appetite or behavior, and seek prompt treatment for wounds, breathing problems, vomiting, urinary difficulty, or sudden lethargy. Avoidable disease and delayed treatment can shorten life just as surely as an outdoor accident.

FAQ

How many years longer do indoor cats live than outdoor cats?

There is no dependable universal number. The UC Davis necropsy study found a lower median age at death for outdoor-only cats overall, but among cats that reached at least one year, the housing groups had similar median ages and the differences were not statistically significant.

Is it cruel to keep a cat indoors?

Indoor-only living can support good welfare when a cat has play, foraging, climbing, hiding, scratching, social interaction, and clean toileting facilities. The concern is an environment that does not meet the cat’s physical and behavioral needs, not simply being indoors.

Is an indoor/outdoor cat safer than an outdoor-only cat?

Less outdoor exposure generally means fewer opportunities for traffic accidents, fights, disease, poisoning, and getting lost. However, “indoor/outdoor” covers everything from occasional supervised access to unrestricted roaming, so risk varies widely.

What is the safest way to let my cat outside?

A secure catio or cat-safe fence offers outdoor stimulation while limiting exposure to hazards. Harness-and-leash walks can work for cats that accept gradual training. Microchip the cat, use appropriate identification, and ask a veterinarian about vaccines, parasite prevention, and disease testing.

The Bottom Line

Indoor-only cats generally avoid more life-threatening hazards and may have better odds of a long life, but the evidence does not support a fixed indoor-versus-outdoor lifespan formula. Outdoor access is safer when controlled and supported by preventive veterinary care. Whether a cat stays indoors or goes outside, a healthy weight, regular checkups, enrichment, identification, and prompt treatment all matter.
