What is Air Horse One?
Air Horse One is a reported nickname for a horse-configured Boeing 727-200 used by Tex Sutton’s horse-transport operation. The Points Guy reported in 2019 that the aircraft was flown by Kalitta Air and could carry up to 21 horses. That is dated secondary reporting, not confirmation of the current fleet, operator arrangement, or capacity. It is not a passenger airline.
Tex Sutton is a horse-transport operation, not an airline. A horse’s journey may combine collection and delivery by road with a cargo flight, and arrangements vary by owner and transport company. The route, aircraft, stall configuration, and care team should not be assumed to be the same for every horse.

Available in many colors like Dark Blue, Light Blue or Pink, this horse grooming kit provides organized storage for equestrian grooming supplies at the stable, lessons and shows.
Air Horse One is best understood as a reported example of a specialized transport system: ground logistics, aircraft cargo space adapted for horses, and people responsible for handling and care.
Why would a Kentucky Derby horse fly?
Derby contenders may begin their journeys at racing centers far from Louisville. Combining road and air travel can cover the long-distance portion by plane, with ground vehicles handling pickup and delivery. The choice depends on the horse’s origin, schedule, transport arrangements, and destination.
Air travel does not mean every Kentucky Derby horse flies on Air Horse One—or even that every horse travels by air. The available research does not establish what share of Derby horses fly. Horses may use different aircraft or ground routes, and international arrivals have additional requirements.
From the stable to the cargo aircraft
The journey is a series of handoffs, rather than simply loading a horse onto a plane:
Recommended Free Tools
- Pickup is coordinated. A specialist transporter arranges collection from a stable, track, or other location.
- The horse is loaded into a purpose-built stall. These portable units are designed for aircraft transport, rather than being passenger seats or loose cargo.
- Ground equipment moves the stall to the aircraft. The stall is positioned and secured in the cargo area according to the transport arrangement.
- The flight and onboard care are planned. The aircraft, route, and people accompanying the horses depend on the particular shipment.
- A ground leg completes the journey. The horse is transported from the arrival airport to its receiving stable or, where applicable, a quarantine facility.
Portable stalls make the handoff between ground and air transport possible. SAE International’s ARP1621C describes minimum requirements for aircraft horse-transport unit-load devices intended to protect horses from injury and aircraft from corrosion caused by waste. The standard allows a unit designed for one horse or several; it does not establish that a particular operator’s equipment conforms to it.

How a cargo aircraft is adapted for horses
A cargo aircraft can carry purpose-built horse stalls in its cargo area. These are transport units, not ordinary airline seats or open cargo positions. The design has to account for the horses and the aircraft, including secure positioning and protection from waste.
SAE International lists ARP1621C, “ULD for Aircraft Transportation of Horses,” as revised September 11, 2017. The recommended practice defines minimum requirements for transporting horses properly and safely by air, protecting them from injury, and protecting aircraft from corrosion created by waste spill. This technical background explains why portable stalls are designed as specialized units; it does not verify the layout or equipment on any specific flight.
What happens during the flight?
The Points Guy’s 2019 report said the horses carried hay and water and described crews using slower climbs and descents, seeking smoother conditions, and accepting delays. These are details from dated secondary reporting, not verified current company policy or a guarantee about every flight.

The flight crew operates the aircraft; horse handlers provide animal care and observation when included in the transport plan.
These practices are intended to manage the trip around the animals, but they do not establish that every horse experiences air travel in the same way or arrives without stress. A horse’s experience depends on the animal and the particular journey.

- TWO CARRYING METHODS, ONE PRECISE FIT: A durable nylon webbing handle pairs with the adjustable shoulder strap for comfortable hand or shoulder carrying. Measures 38" x 33" to fit most adult western saddles, including 17" show saddles
- READY FOR BARN AND SHOW USE: Designed for everyday equestrian environments, the carrier supports frequent handling at home, in trailers, and at events, helping owners move and store western saddles with practical convenience
- SMOOTH NYLON LINING REDUCES FRICTION: Interior nylon liner, paired with the 420D poly nylon outer shell, protects saddle leather from scratches during loading and removal, keeping the finish looking newer for longer. The soft-touch layer also makes sliding saddles in and out easier without snagging
- SECURE FIT DURING CARRY: Bottom connection straps help keep the saddle positioned and prevent shifting or flopping while you carry it, making transport smoother and more controlled. This stability also reduces wear from repeated handling
- FULL-ENCLOSURE PROTECTION FOR LONG-TERM STORAGE: Full-length two-way zipper seals out moisture, dust, and debris to prevent surface scuffs whether in transit or on the saddle rack. The padded poly fill interior adds cushioning, keeping tack ready for the next ride
Why familiar handlers may travel with the horses
Some equine transport arrangements include onboard grooms or a veterinarian. Familiar handlers may provide continuity from loading through the flight and arrival, but the care team should not be assumed to be identical on every trip.
The division of responsibilities is different from ordinary freight: aircraft crew operate the plane, while the transport team handles the horses’ immediate care. The exact staffing and onboard services depend on the shipment.

Domestic travel and international import are different processes. International shipments can require permits, veterinary documents, inspection, and quarantine under rules that depend on the horse’s origin, route, and purpose of entry.
USDA APHIS’s live-equine import guidance, last modified September 11, 2026, says most imports require an import permit, an official export health certificate, inspection at the first U.S. port of entry, and quarantine. APHIS lists possible quarantine periods of 3, 7, or 60 days, depending on health status, countries where the horse resided during the prior 60 days, transit, and purpose. Horses from Canada are excepted from the general quarantine requirement. Check APHIS’s country-specific guidance for the shipment rather than applying one duration to every horse.
APHIS says permit applications should be submitted at least 7 business days before shipping and that a permit is valid for 14 days. Inspection arrangements should be made at least 3 business days in advance. The page also states that the official export certificate must accompany the shipment in original paper form. These are requirements as stated on the cited APHIS page; confirm current, shipment-specific instructions before travel.

APHIS further states that, beginning October 1, 2026, qualifying horses from countries other than Canada and Mexico must arrive with certificates reflecting the new model certificate. A noncompliant certificate may result in refusal of entry. This rule is time-sensitive and applies within the scope described by APHIS.

How much does it cost to fly a horse?
The available research does not establish a current Air Horse One price. A 2019 report gave a historical price for the flight it described, but that figure should not be used as a current quote. Cost can depend on the route, aircraft and ground arrangements, documentation, veterinary requirements, and whether quarantine applies. A transport provider would need to quote for the specific shipment.

Equine air transport serves more than Derby arrivals. Horses may travel between racing centers, tracks, and other destinations, with road transport completing parts of the journey. The aircraft and operator used depend on the particular arrangement.
Air transport is one part of modern racing logistics, alongside ground transport, portable stalls, trained handlers, and—when international movement is involved—regulatory planning. The sources do not establish that any one aircraft or mode is used by every elite racehorse.
