Introduce the dogs gradually: start with a parallel walk on neutral ground, keep early interactions brief, and use gates or separate rooms at home so each dog can relax. There is no fixed adjustment timetable. Let their comfort—not a calendar—guide when you move closer or allow more time together.

Before the new dog arrives, plan for a good match and safe space

Think about your resident dog’s temperament, health, age, activity level, and history with other dogs. A shy or calm dog may find a very exuberant newcomer overwhelming. The goal is not to make the dogs interact immediately; it is to give them room to adjust without competing for important resources.

Before bringing the new dog home:

  • Set up separate areas using a gate, exercise pen, or closed room. Each dog needs space to rest and a way to get away from the other.
  • Put away valued toys and food from areas the dogs might share. Feed them in separate rooms.
  • Plan individual attention and preserve the resident dog’s usual routine as much as possible.
  • Arrange for one person to handle each dog during the first meeting, if possible.

Food, resting places, possessions, territory, and attention from people can all become sources of competition or stress. VCA’s veterinary behavior guidance recommends managing these resources rather than expecting the dogs to sort out competition on their own.

Make the first meeting a calm parallel walk

Choose a neutral outdoor area with enough room to create distance. Start by walking the dogs in the same direction, far enough apart that each can stay calm. If both remain comfortable, gradually move closer and allow a brief sniff. Avoid forcing a face-to-face greeting or encouraging play before they are ready.

  1. Have one handler walk each dog, when possible.
  2. Begin at a distance where both dogs can walk without fixating, pulling toward the other, or showing signs of stress.
  3. Keep leashes loose. Tension can make an encounter harder, and some dogs find leash restraint unsettling.
  4. Let the dogs choose whether to approach. If one turns away or avoids the other, give that dog more room rather than steering it closer.
  5. Keep the first interaction short. Reward calm behavior, then create space or end the session while both dogs are still coping well.

A neutral-space walk is recommended by the American Kennel Club and Blue Cross. Leashes can help handlers manage distance, but they are not a reason to hold dogs close together if either is uncomfortable; VCA notes that restraint can inhibit movement or make some dogs more nervous.

Read both dogs’ body language and adjust the pace

Look at each dog’s whole body and whether it can move away. A wagging tail alone does not tell you that an interaction is comfortable; consider posture, facial expression, movement, and what happens when the dogs get closer.

What you may see What to do
Relaxed faces, wiggly bodies, play bows, or loose movement Continue calmly if both dogs remain comfortable. Keep the interaction brief and supervised.
Turning the head away, yawning, shaking, a low tail, tense jaws, or raised hair along the back Increase distance and keep walking, or end the session if the dog does not settle.
Repeated avoidance, freezing, escalating tension, or agitation Separate the dogs and pause the introduction. Do not force another greeting.

The AKC’s body-language guidance describes relaxed expressions, play bows, fast wagging tails, and wiggling hind ends as signs a greeting may be going well, and lists yawning, turning away, tense jaws, low tails, shaking, and raised hair as possible signs that it is too much. Read those cues in context and pay attention to whether either dog can disengage.

Some dogs may ignore each other at first. That is acceptable; they do not need to play or become friends during the first meeting. Reward calm, neutral behavior and give both dogs breaks.

Move into the home with supervision and separate spaces

After the outdoor meeting, continue managing contact indoors. Use a gate, exercise pen, crate, or separate room to give the dogs breaks and prevent unsupervised encounters. Choose arrangements that securely separate these particular dogs, fit your home, and leave each dog enough room to rest. A crate can provide a resting area, but it does not replace supervision; a gate or pen can provide a boundary while allowing you to monitor the dogs.

  • Feed the dogs separately, with a closed door or other secure barrier between them.
  • Keep food, valued toys, and other tempting possessions out of shared areas while the dogs are adjusting.
  • Give each dog its own resting place and one-on-one attention.
  • Supervise interactions and separate the dogs when you cannot watch them.
  • Maintain the resident dog’s familiar routine where possible, including time with you away from the newcomer.

A leash may help with distance outside, but do not use it to force contact or keep a nervous dog close. Indoors, barriers and separate areas are useful only if they actually prevent access and let both dogs settle.

Handle puppy play, growling, and uneven interest carefully

With a puppy and an older dog, look for loose, wiggly movement, play bows, and pauses. Balanced play includes turns and moments when each dog checks whether the other wants to continue. Give the less-interested dog a break; allow it to re-engage only if it chooses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not punish a dog for growling. The AKC describes a growl from an adult dog as communication that it is setting a boundary with a puppy. Instead, calmly interrupt the interaction and give the puppy a break if it is overwhelming the older dog. Continue play only while both dogs appear comfortable and can pause or move away.

How long should the dogs stay separated?

There is no single number of days or weeks that applies to every pair. Keep the dogs separated whenever you cannot supervise safely, and use barriers and separate areas for as long as they need them. Increase shared time gradually when both dogs are relaxed; if stress returns, create distance and return to shorter, more controlled interactions.

Progress is about how the dogs are coping, not whether they have reached a particular date. Calmly sharing space without engaging can be a positive step; play is not a requirement.

When to get professional help

Keep the dogs apart and seek help from a qualified trainer or veterinary behavior professional if interactions become more aggressive, either dog remains persistently fearful, or you cannot manage contact safely. The AKC also advises consulting a trainer or behaviorist if you are unsure how the dogs are getting along. A professional can help assess the situation and guide a safer plan.
