Plain fresh or dried catnip is generally safe for dogs in small amounts, but it usually does not affect them the way it affects cats. Most dogs show no noticeable reaction. Some may sniff, lick, or play with it, while a few seem mildly relaxed or sleepy.

The bigger safety concerns are eating a large quantity, exposure to concentrated catnip essential oil, or swallowing part of a catnip toy. Catnip should also not be treated as a proven anxiety remedy for dogs.

What is catnip?

Catnip is the mint-family herb Nepeta cataria. Its best-known active compound is nepetalactone, which triggers a temporary behavioral response in many cats. Depending on the cat, that response can include rolling, rubbing, vocalizing, drooling, excitement, relaxation, or agitation. Some cats do not respond at all.

Dogs do not typically react to nepetalactone in the same dramatic way. The chemical signal that produces the familiar feline response does not appear to work the same way in dogs.

What does catnip do to dogs?

There is no predictable canine “high.” After smelling or eating a small amount of catnip, a dog may:

  • Show no obvious reaction
  • Sniff, lick, or investigate the herb
  • Become interested in a toy containing catnip
  • Seem mildly relaxed or sleepy

Any calming effect appears to be mild and inconsistent. Catnip is not an established sedative, anti-anxiety treatment, or substitute for veterinary behavior care. A dog that becomes unusually sleepy, uncoordinated, trembles, vomits, or behaves abnormally may have been exposed to something other than a small amount of plain catnip.

Can dogs eat catnip?

According to Tina Wismer, DVM, MS, DABVT, senior director of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, fresh and dried catnip are generally considered safe for dogs. That does not mean a dog should eat an unlimited amount.

Plant material can irritate the digestive tract, particularly if a dog consumes a large quantity. Possible effects include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Reduced appetite

There is no well-established, standardized canine catnip dose in the veterinary sources reviewed. Informal suggestions such as “half a teaspoon” should not be treated as a universal dose: a dog’s size, health, diet, and the amount consumed all matter. If your dog has eaten more than a small amount, call your veterinarian for advice rather than trying to calculate a dose from an internet rule.

Fresh or dried catnip is not the same as catnip oil

This distinction is essential. A few dried leaves are very different from concentrated catnip essential oil.

Essential oils can be absorbed through the mouth and digestive tract, skin, lungs, and mucous membranes. Depending on the product and amount, exposure can cause vomiting, drooling, lethargy, loss of appetite, poor coordination, tremors, seizures, or breathing problems. Do not apply catnip essential oil directly to your dog, add it to food, or give it by mouth.

If your dog has licked, swallowed, or had a substantial skin or inhalation exposure to an essential oil, contact a veterinarian or animal poison service promptly. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically tells you to do so; aspiration can make an oil exposure more dangerous.

Catnip toys can create a different hazard

With a catnip-filled toy, the catnip may not be the main problem. A dog that tears apart and swallows the toy could ingest fabric, stuffing, plastic, a bell, string, or another foreign object.

Keep catnip toys away from dogs that chew destructively or swallow pieces of toys. Contact a veterinarian promptly if you know your dog swallowed part of a toy, or if the dog develops:

  • Repeated vomiting or retching
  • Abdominal pain or a tense belly
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy or weakness
  • Difficulty passing stool

A swallowed string or toy fragment can cause an intestinal obstruction, which is an emergency rather than a simple catnip reaction.

Should you use catnip to calm an anxious dog?

It is not a reliable strategy. Some dogs may appear calmer after exposure, but others show no change, and catnip has not been established as a treatment for separation anxiety, travel anxiety, sleeplessness, or fear of fireworks and thunderstorms.

Do not depend on catnip during a major stressful event. For recurring or severe anxiety, ask your veterinarian about a plan that may include environmental changes, gradual behavior modification, and—when appropriate—prescription medication. A veterinarian can also check for pain or illness that may be contributing to a new behavior problem.

What to do if your dog eats catnip

  1. Remove the remaining product. Prevent further access to the herb, toy, oil, or packaging.
  2. Identify what was consumed. Check whether your dog ate plain fresh or dried leaves, a blended product, essential oil, packaging, string, stuffing, or part of a toy.
  3. Assess your dog. Look for vomiting, diarrhea, unusual sleepiness, weakness, poor coordination, breathing difficulty, tremors, or seizures.
  4. Call your veterinarian if needed. Seek advice after a large ingestion, any essential-oil exposure, persistent or significant symptoms, or suspected foreign-body ingestion.
  5. Get emergency help for serious signs. Breathing problems, tremors, seizures, collapse, severe weakness, or suspected obstruction require immediate veterinary attention.

For poison advice in the United States, contact ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435—a consultation fee may apply—or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661. Have the product container, ingredient list, estimated amount, and your dog’s weight available.

What about anise as a “dog catnip”?

Anise is sometimes marketed as a canine equivalent of catnip because some dogs find its smell interesting. That comparison is not scientifically established, however. Do not give a dog aniseed oil or other concentrated essential oils. The fact that an ingredient is plant-derived does not make its concentrated form safe.

FAQ

Is catnip poisonous to dogs?

Plain fresh or dried catnip is generally considered safe for dogs in small amounts. Eating a large amount can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or other stomach upset. Essential oil, toy parts, and products containing additional ingredients create different risks.

Will catnip make my dog high like a cat?

Usually not. Most dogs show no obvious response. Some may sniff or play with catnip, and a few may seem mildly relaxed or sleepy, but it is not a predictable canine high or sedative.

Can I give my dog catnip for anxiety?

Catnip is not a proven treatment for anxiety and should not replace veterinary advice, behavior modification, or prescribed medication. Ask your veterinarian about recurring or severe fear, panic, or separation-related behavior.

What should I do if my dog ate a catnip toy?

Call your veterinarian promptly, especially if fabric, stuffing, plastic, a bell, or string is missing. Repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, lethargy, or difficulty passing stool can indicate an intestinal obstruction and requires urgent care.

The Bottom Line

Small amounts of plain fresh or dried catnip are generally safe for dogs, but the herb is neither a reliable calming medicine nor a feline-style intoxicant for them. Keep essential oils and destructible catnip toys away from dogs, and contact a veterinarian promptly after a large ingestion, oil exposure, serious symptoms, or suspected foreign-body ingestion.
