Walmart describes the 25-pound bag as ground clay in a non-clumping pebble formula. Cats.com gave that specific formula 3/5 overall in its review table, but the available sources do not establish how it performs in a controlled comparison.
Which Special Kitty litter is this review about?
This review focuses on Special Kitty Non-Clumping Clay Cat Litter, Unscented, 25 lb Bag. Walmart identifies it as ground clay in a non-clumping pebble form. It is not the same product as Special Kitty’s scoopable clumping litters, including its fragrance-free tight-clumping formula and its lightweight, fresh-scented clumping formula.

That distinction matters: observations about dust, tracking, odor, or clumping for one formula should not be treated as results for another. The available independent review gives a rating and approximate price for the unscented natural-clay formula, but its detailed performance observations concern a different, tight-clumping fragrance-free product.

Is Special Kitty unscented non-clumping litter worth the price?
It may suit a budget-conscious household that prefers unscented litter and is comfortable with a non-clumping cleaning routine. Cats.com listed the natural-clay unscented formula at about $0.25 per pound and rated it 3/5 overall in a review table published around 2021. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not the result of a controlled laboratory test or a head-to-head comparison.
#1 Best Overall
Walmart’s listing showed $6.98 for a 25-pound bag, or about 27.9 cents per pound, when captured on October 7, 2026. The page also displayed 4.5 stars from 8,066 ratings. These are retailer-page snapshots, not lasting prices or performance guarantees; check the current listing for price, stock, and rating totals.
How does the non-clumping formula handle odor and dust?
The cited sources do not provide specific, clearly attributable dust or odor test results for the unscented non-clumping formula. Walmart’s product listing describes its form and gives care directions, while Cats.com’s detailed dust, tracking, clumping, and odor observations refer to the separate fragrance-free tight-clumping formula. Those observations cannot establish how the non-clumping litter performs.

- Multi-Cat Household Solution: Suitable for multiple cat homes and sensitive cats
- Dust-Free Design: 99% dust-free design helps reduce tracking and mess around the litter area
- Easy Daily Cleanup: Tight clumping action makes daily cleanup easy by forming solid clumps that don't break apart while scooping
- Long-Lasting Odor Control: Fragrance-free formula provides up to 10 days of odor control without any added scents
- Convenient Size: 20-pound jug provides ample supply of unscented clumping clay cat litter for your household needs
For that other formula, the Cats.com reviewer reported hard, tight clumps and fairly good odor control, but also dust and some tracking outside the box. The reviewer said their experience did not support the product’s advertised “99% dust-free” claim. These are that reviewer’s observations about the tight-clumping variant, not measured findings about the unscented non-clumping product.
What does daily and weekly maintenance involve?
Walmart’s directions for the non-clumping litter say to add it to a clean litter box to a depth of 3–5 inches, remove waste as soon as practical, and replace used litter weekly or as needed. The formula does not form scoopable clumps, so it is a different maintenance choice from clumping litter: follow the listing’s replacement directions rather than expecting clumps to be removed while the remaining litter stays in place.

How does it compare with Special Kitty clumping options?
The products differ in form and scent, but the available sources do not offer a controlled, same-conditions comparison across all three formulas. The table separates the information the sources do establish from reviewer observations that apply only to the tight-clumping product.
| Formula | Form and scent | Price information | Performance information in the sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural Clay Cat Litter | Non-clumping clay; unscented | About $0.25/lb in Cats.com’s review table (published around 2021); Walmart showed $6.98 for 25 lb, about $0.279/lb, on October 7, 2026 | Cats.com rated it 3/5 overall. The sources do not provide specific dust, tracking, or odor observations for this formula. |
| Scoopable Tight Clumping Cat Litter | Tight-clumping; fragrance free | Not stated in the cited review table | Cats.com’s reviewer reported hard, tight clumps and fairly good odor control, along with dust and some tracking. These are reviewer observations, not controlled measurements. |
| Lightweight & Scoopable Clumping Cat Litter | Clumping; fresh scent | Not stated in the cited review table | The cited sources do not provide specific performance observations for this formula. |
Choose based on the cleaning routine and scent preference you want, rather than assuming all Special Kitty litters share the same dust or odor performance. The unscented natural-clay option is the one in this review; the detailed clumping and tracking feedback belongs only to the fragrance-free tight-clumping variant.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The product listing and independent review support identifying the exact formula, package size, listed care directions, a review score, and dated price snapshots. They do not establish health or safety outcomes, the effects of clay dust, or suitability for kittens or cats with respiratory conditions. No veterinary guidance, toxicology research, or independent laboratory testing is included among these sources, so those questions cannot be answered from them.
