Yes, the video shows a real bear—but it was trained, and the apparent chase was staged. It is not footage of a man fleeing a wild bear in a chance encounter.
What the video shows
The clip follows a drone flying between snowy trees before revealing a man running ahead of a bear. It appeared on Reddit on January 26, 2022, with the caption “Such a lovely day to test out my drone,” according to Snopes’ fact check.
The video is genuine footage, not a CGI or AI-generated bear. But the dramatic interpretation—that a wild bear unexpectedly chased a man—is misleading: the bear was trained and the scene was prepared, as also reported by Annahar’s 2023 fact check.
How the clip was verified
Snopes initially found indications that visual effects might be involved. Its conclusion changed after Dima Smirnov, the FPV drone pilot identified as the person who filmed the clip, sent evidence showing that the bear was real and trained. HotHardware’s November 3, 2023 report summarizes Snopes’ account and says the man in the video also confirmed the bear was real.

That confirmation settles whether the animal in the footage is real; it does not turn the scene into a spontaneous wildlife encounter. The key distinction is between authentic footage of a real animal and an unscripted chase.

What “real” means in this case
- Real bear: The fact checks identify the animal as real, not digitally created.
- Trained bear: The animal was trained, according to the evidence reported by Snopes and the other fact checks.
- Staged scene: The man was not running from a wild bear in a chance attack; the video’s apparent emergency is misleading.
- Drone footage: Smirnov supplied evidence to Snopes and is identified as the pilot who captured the clip.
