The PetSafe ScoopFree can reduce daily scooping and contain waste odor, but it is a better fit for some cats and households than others. In Cats.com’s hands-on review of the original base model, the main trade-offs were crystal-litter-only use, a relatively small litter area and recurring tray costs. The reviewer found it more appealing for a single-cat home than for a household with two or more cats.
What the original ScoopFree does
The original base model reviewed by Mallory Crusta uses a disposable cardboard tray filled with crystal litter, a presence sensor and a rake that moves waste into a separate compartment. It plugs into an AC adapter with a 10-foot cord. This is the base model tested in the review, not the Ultra: it does not have a hood, use counter or adjustable delay timer.

In Crusta’s account, the rake waited 20 minutes after a cat left the box before starting. A returning cat reset the delay. Each cycle took just over a minute. The reviewer described the operation as quiet and reported no jams or malfunctions during more than a month of use. Those are observations from one household and test period, not a broad reliability guarantee. Cats.com’s review, updated September 26, 2025, gives the original model an overall score of 4/5.

How well does it control odor and litter scatter?
The reviewer found that crystal litter tracked and scattered less than she expected, and that the covered waste compartment contained fecal odor effectively. But the litter did not last as long as the manufacturer’s duration claim cited in the review. With two cats, Crusta reported that it began smelling rank at about one week and appeared saturated by day nine. She wrote: “The litter box stayed dry for between a week and 9 days between my two cats—it certainly didn’t make it to the 10-15 days promised by PetSafe.” That result describes her two-cat test; litter life will depend on the cats and how often the box is used.

Will the litter area fit your cat?
The original base model’s outer dimensions were reported as 27 × 19 × 7 inches, but the usable litter surface was only 14 × 14 inches, according to the review. The distinction matters: the unit’s footprint is not the same as the space a cat has to stand and dig. Crusta found the tray shallow and the usable area limited for many cats.
Before buying, compare the interior dimensions of the exact version you are considering with your cat’s size and usual posture in the litter box. A separate Cats.com buying guide, updated March 25, 2026, lists a ScoopFree model at 28.5 × 20.5 × 11.5 inches. The guide’s measurements may refer to a different version, so they should not be substituted for the original base model’s dimensions.

Does ScoopFree work with regular litter?
No. The review and buying guide describe ScoopFree as compatible with crystal litter, not ordinary clumping litter. If your cat rejects crystal litter or you want to keep using a different litter type, that compatibility constraint is a reason to look for a different style of self-cleaning box. Cats.com’s guide treats clumping-litter flexibility as a useful selection criterion, but that alone does not make other boxes equivalent in fit, operation or cost.
What will replacement supplies cost?
Replacement trays are the main ongoing expense identified in the review. The disposable tray combines the litter and waste compartment, so replacing it regularly adds to the ownership cost. The review suggests considering PetSafe’s reusable plastic tray instead of prefilled disposable trays, but its price and monthly-cost estimates are page-reported figures rather than verified current prices.

To estimate your own cost, check the current price of the correct tray or compatible litter and estimate how often you would need to replace or replenish it for your household. Use the shorter litter life reported in the two-cat test as a caution, not a guaranteed schedule. The buying guide also flags disposable trays as potentially costly, especially when heavier use leads to faster saturation.
Is it a good choice for two cats?
It may be less practical in a multi-cat home because heavier use can mean more frequent supply changes and higher recurring costs. Crusta’s two-cat household got about a week to nine days from the litter, and she questioned whether the box was worth it for homes with two or more cats. That is one reviewer’s conclusion, not a universal rule, but it is a meaningful warning if you have multiple cats or a cat with high urine output.

The case is stronger for a single-cat household when the cat already accepts crystal litter and the owner values reducing daily scooping. Even then, check that the usable area suits the cat and that recurring tray or litter costs fit your budget.
