The Purrclean Smart Self-Cleaning Litter Box may suit a smaller cat and an owner who values touchscreen controls and scheduled scooping, but its app setup and deep cleaning were frustrating in a six-week Cats.com review. Large-cat fit, odor control and leakage also deserve careful consideration. Cats.com rated it 3.6 out of 5 in a review updated September 26, 2025; that score is one reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee of how it will work in your home.
What does the Purrclean litter box do?
Purrclean is an app-enabled automatic litter box from Instachew. The retailer listing describes a side-to-side rotating drum that moves waste into a lower bin, with cleaning scheduled or started through the Instachew Infinity app. The unit also has a touchscreen, air purification and multiple safety and weight sensors that are described as stopping operation when triggered. These are advertised features; the Cats.com reviewer reported difficulty connecting the app.

The product listing says the box comes with a power cord, instruction manual and one roll of waste bags. Retailer Q&A says litter is not included and describes the box as compatible with clumping litter, including natural varieties. That does not establish compatibility with every litter, including tofu litter; check the current instructions for the specific litter you plan to use.
How well does it work in practice?
Cats.com reviewer Katelynn Sobus used the box for around six weeks in a multi-cat household. She praised its on-unit controls: “I was pleased with the touch screen on the litter box itself, which functions well and is easy to use.” She also reported quiet scooping. Her experience was less positive with setup and maintenance: connecting the app took a long time, and removing and reinstalling the drum was awkward.

The app is described as supporting cleaning schedules and litter-habit monitoring. The reviewer eventually connected it by following the manual’s troubleshooting steps, but found nearby-cat alerts excessive. That distinction matters: app functions are advertised, while setup friction and alert frequency reflect one reviewer’s experience.
Will it fit your cat?
Fit is a significant consideration. The Cats.com reviewer said only her smallest cats would use the box and flagged its limited suitability for larger cats. Chewy Q&A attributes an approximate usable interior of 46 × 42 cm (about 18 × 16.5 in) to Instachew. Treat that as a retailer-page answer rather than a dimension independently confirmed against the manual; measure your cat’s usual litter-box space and compare it with the current product guidance.

Retailer copy gives a minimum age of six months, but weight guidance on the listing conflicts: different sections say 2 kg and 2.5 kg. Do not rely on either figure as definitive manufacturer guidance. Confirm the current manual and safety requirements for your region before use. The product is described as having sensors that stop operation when triggered, but that feature description is not a substitute for checking eligibility and instructions.
What are the main drawbacks?
App connection and alerts
The reviewer had trouble pairing the app and needed the manual’s troubleshooting steps to complete setup. She also found alerts for nearby cats excessive. If dependable app notifications are central to your decision, consider this reported setup experience rather than assuming the advertised monitoring will be effortless.

Deep cleaning and drum handling
The reviewer found deep cleaning difficult: the interior liner seemed fixed in place, and the drum was bulky to handle. The retailer listing describes removable, washable components, but that advertised claim does not erase her specific difficulty. Consider whether you can comfortably lift and maneuver the drum when cleaning.
Odor control and leakage reports
Owner experiences quoted in the Cats.com review were mixed. Some described satisfactory odor control; others reported persistent odor or urine leaking around the drum. These reports do not establish that every unit will leak or fail to control odor, but they are relevant risks to weigh if odor containment is a priority.

Who is the Purrclean best suited for?
It is most plausible for an owner of a smaller, eligible cat who wants an automatic cleaning schedule and useful on-unit touchscreen controls, and who is comfortable troubleshooting an app and handling a bulky drum during cleaning. It is a less convincing choice if your cat is large, you need easy deep cleaning, or you require proven odor and leak performance. The available review evidence does not establish consistent outcomes for every household.
