The Purina Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor sits beneath an existing litterbox and uses weight and litterbox-activity data to show patterns, alerts and reports in an app. It may help you notice changes to discuss with your veterinarian, but it is not a medical diagnostic device. The available sources describe manufacturer features and claims; they do not establish independent validation of the monitor’s accuracy.
What the Petivity monitor does
Petivity is an under-the-box monitor paired with a smartphone app. Purina says it tracks cat weight and litterbox habits, then presents charts, alerts and email Insight Reports. Will it fit your litterbox and home?
The monitor measures 19 by 14 by 2 inches and weighs 5.5 pounds. Petivity recommends a litterbox no larger than 21 by 16 inches. The box must fit completely on the monitor and sit securely; self-cleaning litterboxes are not recommended. Check your box’s base dimensions and shape, not just the dimensions at the rim. The device can use its supplied power cord or six AA batteries. Setup calls for Wi-Fi and a compatible phone. The product page lists Android 11 or later and iPhone iOS 14 or later; app and operating-system requirements can change, so confirm compatibility in your app store before buying. Petivity’s page lists availability in the 48 contiguous U.S. states; check current sales-region details if you live elsewhere.
How setup works
- Place the monitor on a hard, level surface with access to its power option and Wi-Fi.
- Center a compatible litterbox fully on the monitor so it is stable.
- Install the Petivity app, pair the monitor and create a profile for each cat. The Petivity app page describes the app, while the setup guide provides device instructions.
- Let the system collect activity so it can build a profile of each cat’s routine. The manufacturer says it uses that information to provide charts, alerts and email reports.
Can one monitor track multiple cats?
Petivity says one monitor can track up to five cats. That can suit a shared box, but a multi-box household needs more thought: the manufacturer recommends one monitor per litterbox for a fuller picture of activity at each box. If cats use boxes that are not monitored, the app’s activity record will not represent every litterbox visit.

Can it tell you whether your cat is sick?
No. Purina says changes in weight or litterbox habits may be associated with conditions such as urinary tract infection, kidney disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism or obesity, but the monitor does not diagnose them. Its product page states: “Information provided by Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitors is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”

Purina veterinarian Dr. Avi Shaprut said in the company’s September 26, 2022 launch announcement that the system can help owners detect changes that may be early signs of health conditions and seek veterinary care. That is a manufacturer’s description of the intended benefit, not independent evidence that the product improves clinical outcomes. Treat an alert or trend as a reason to observe your cat and contact a veterinarian—not as a diagnosis. Likewise, a lack of alerts does not establish that a cat is healthy.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The cited product materials explain the monitor’s intended measurements, setup and app features. They do not establish independent testing of its weight readings, activity detection, multi-cat identification or alert accuracy. No independent clinical-performance statistic is established in the available sources. That matters if you plan to use the numbers to make health decisions: regard them as monitoring information to share with your veterinarian, not as a substitute for examination or testing.

Is Petivity worth considering?
Petivity is most relevant for an owner who wants an ongoing record of weight and litterbox-use patterns and has a compatible, stable box setup. It is less suitable if you use a self-cleaning box, your litterbox will not sit fully on the platform, or you need a medically validated measurement or diagnosis.
