No currently living king cobra is identified as the largest by the published records available. The best-documented giant was a Malaysian snake measured at 5.71 metres (18 feet 8 inches) by autumn 1939, but it died during preparations for the Second World War. A separate 2011 zoological paper gives a recorded maximum of 5.85 metres without identifying a living individual or explaining whether it was the same snake.
The direct answer: no living champion has been established
The question “What is the largest king cobra alive?” sounds as though it should have a single name and measurement. It does not, at least not from the documented records currently available. No published source identified here names a living Ophiophagus hannah and verifies that it is the world’s largest surviving king cobra.

That distinction matters because four different claims are often blended together: the species’ usual size, a biological maximum, a formally documented individual, and a living animal observed recently. They are not interchangeable. A record from a museum or zoo can establish how large one snake became in the past, but it cannot prove that the animal is alive now. Likewise, a maximum-length figure in a scientific article may not identify the specimen, date, measuring method or present status.

The largest named specimen: a 5.71-metre snake from Malaysia
Guinness World Records describes a king cobra captured near Port Dickson, in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, in April 1937. The snake was transported to London Zoo, where it reached a measured length of 5.71 metres by autumn 1939. That is approximately 18 feet 8 inches.
This is an individual record, not an estimate of the normal size of the species. Guinness identifies it as the longest venomous-snake specimen in its historical record. The snake was not a candidate for a present-day “largest alive” title: Guinness reports that it was destroyed along with the zoo’s other venomous snakes when the Second World War began. Its measurement remains evidence of a very large king cobra, but its life ended more than eight decades ago.
The record also has a useful time line. Capture in April 1937 and the 5.71-metre measurement by autumn 1939 show that the figure was recorded after the snake had spent time in captivity. The record does not establish that every wild king cobra can approach that size, nor does it identify a living descendant or replacement champion.

A 2011 article in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, “Ophiophagus hannah (Cantor, 1836), the King Cobra,” reports a recorded maximum total length of 5.85 metres. The article is a separate source from the Guinness entry, and its figure should be presented separately rather than silently substituted for the 5.71-metre specimen.

The available article excerpt does not provide enough context to determine whether the 5.85-metre value refers to the Guinness snake, another historical specimen, or a measurement recorded under different conditions. It also does not identify a currently living animal. For that reason, 5.85 metres is best described as a published maximum total-length figure, while 5.71 metres is the clearly named Guinness specimen measurement.
A difference of 0.14 metre (14 centimetres) can arise from ordinary record-keeping issues: different specimens, different dates in a snake’s growth, or different measurement conventions. Without the full specimen history and method, it would be inaccurate to claim that the 2011 number definitively overturns the Guinness record or proves a living king cobra of that length.
How large king cobras usually are
The historical giants should not be mistaken for the everyday size of the species. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute gives an average king cobra length of 10–12 feet (3–3.6 metres). It says the species can reach 18 feet (5.4 metres).

| Evidence category | Length | Status and meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Typical adult size | 10–12 ft (3–3.6 m) | Smithsonian average for king cobras; describes usual size, not a record individual. |
| Smithsonian possible maximum | 18 ft (5.4 m) | General upper-size statement from the Smithsonian species profile. |
| Named historical specimen | 5.71 m (about 18 ft 8 in) | Guinness measurement by autumn 1939; captured near Port Dickson, Malaysia, in April 1937; later destroyed during wartime preparations. |
| Published recorded maximum | 5.85 m | Figure reported in the 2011 Raffles Bulletin of Zoology article; the available excerpt does not identify the animal or reconcile it with Guinness. |
| Largest living individual today | Not established | No named, currently living snake with an independently documented record appears in these sources. |
The table keeps the claims in their proper categories. It is possible for an average, a stated possible maximum and a historical specimen record to coexist without contradiction: they answer different questions.
What would be needed to identify a living record holder?
A credible “largest alive” claim needs more than a dramatic photograph or an old maximum quoted without context. At minimum, readers should be able to check the following details:
- Species identity: The animal must be identified as Ophiophagus hannah, the scientific name used by the Smithsonian. Large snakes are often misidentified in informal posts.
- Current status: A recent date and evidence that the individual is still living are essential. A measurement from a historical collection cannot answer a present-tense question.
- Named individual and location: The snake should have a traceable keeper, institution, field team or other responsible record holder, plus a documented place of observation.
- Measurement details: The report should say how total length was measured and when. “Total length” needs to be distinguished from an estimate based on a photograph, a stretched skin or a curved body.
- Independent documentation: A second credible record, institutional report or archival measurement makes the claim easier to audit than an anonymous social-media caption.
- Source date and provenance: Readers should be able to tell whether the number is a new observation, a repetition of an older record or a value copied from a secondary list.
Until those details are available, “largest alive” remains an unverified superlative. A responsible article can report the claim as unconfirmed, but should not convert it into a fact.

Different animals may be behind similar numbers
The Guinness entry names one snake and supplies a capture history. The 2011 journal figure does not, in the available excerpt, provide enough specimen information to show whether it describes that same animal. Treating both numbers as measurements of one snake would create a false precision.

Measurements can be taken at different times
The Malaysian snake was captured in 1937 and measured at 5.71 metres by autumn 1939. A length recorded after a period in captivity is not automatically comparable with a field estimate made on the day of capture. The date attached to a number is part of the evidence, not an incidental detail.
“Maximum” does not mean “normal”
A maximum is an upper-end observation. It says little about how frequently snakes reach that size. The Smithsonian’s 10–12-foot average is therefore more useful for understanding ordinary king-cobra dimensions than either five-metre-plus record figure.
Historical records can outlive the animal
Record books preserve measurements after specimens die. That is valuable zoological history, but it creates a wording trap: “the longest king cobra recorded” and “the longest king cobra alive” are different statements. The former can refer to the 1930s specimen; the latter requires current evidence.
King cobra context: species, range and habitat
The king cobra is Ophiophagus hannah, a species distributed across South and Southeast Asia. The Smithsonian profile describes habitats that include forests, bamboo thickets, nearby agricultural areas and mangroves. This broad range helps explain why a single worldwide living champion is difficult to document: populations occupy many countries and a mixture of remote and human-modified landscapes.

Habitat variation also argues against assuming that one reported measurement represents every population. A record from Malaysia is a historical observation of one individual, not a size standard for all king cobras across Asia. The species profile and the historical record should be read together, but not merged into one universal number.
How to read a future “largest king cobra” report
- Start with the date. If the report does not establish that the snake was alive at the stated time, it cannot support a present-tense record.
- Check the identity. Look for the scientific name Ophiophagus hannah and a description of how the identification was made.
- Separate observation from repetition. Determine whether the author measured the snake or simply repeated the 5.71-metre Guinness record or the 5.85-metre journal figure.
- Find the measurement method. A total length should have a stated procedure and units. An unscaled image is not a measurement.
- Look for an accountable source. A zoo, museum, university, conservation authority or named field team provides a clearer chain of responsibility than an unattributed post.
- Compare like with like. Put a living individual beside other living measurements, and historical specimens beside historical specimens. Do not rank unlike evidence as though it were collected under one protocol.
This approach does not make every future claim easy to settle, but it prevents the most common error: presenting an old, unnamed or unverified maximum as a living world record.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
- The best-documented named giant is the 5.71-metre Malaysian king cobra recorded by Guinness by autumn 1939.
- That snake was destroyed during the outbreak of the Second World War, so it is not alive today.
- The Smithsonian gives 10–12 feet (3–3.6 metres) as an average length and says king cobras can reach 18 feet (5.4 metres).
- A 2011 Raffles Bulletin of Zoology article reports a 5.85-metre recorded maximum, but the available excerpt does not identify the specimen or explain its relationship to the Guinness measurement.
- No source cited here establishes a named, living king cobra as the current largest.
Accordingly, the accurate answer to “Discover the Largest King Cobra Alive” is not a snake’s name. It is an evidence qualification: no living champion is presently documented in these records, while the largest clearly identified specimen is historical.
