Cats differ in how much contact they want, and a change in behavior can reflect stress, fear, conflict at home, pain, or illness—not simply a need for more attention. The useful question is whether your cat is acting differently from its own usual pattern.
These seven changes are cues to look more closely, not evidence that you have failed your cat. Consider what else has changed, respect your cat’s signals, and contact a veterinarian about new or persistent behavior changes.

Seven changes that may deserve attention
One behavior on its own cannot tell you how much affection a cat receives. Look for a shift from your cat’s baseline, especially if several changes appear together or affect daily routines.

1. Hiding more or withdrawing
A cat that starts spending more time out of sight or avoids familiar parts of the home may be stressed, frightened, unsettled by a change, or affected by tension with another animal. Illness can also change where a cat chooses to rest. Consider when the hiding began and what else was happening at the time.

2. Losing interest in familiar contact or play
If your cat used to seek you out or join in play and now does so less often, that change is worth noticing. But a cat that has always preferred quiet or limited contact is not, by that preference alone, showing that it lacks affection. Individual cats have different social needs.
3. Becoming irritable or avoiding touch
Swatting, growling, moving away, or reacting defensively when approached can be signs of fear or distress. A cat may also be communicating that it has had enough. Do not force petting or pick up a cat that is trying to disengage. Let it choose whether to approach again.

4. Changing eating, sleeping, or activity
A noticeable shift in appetite, sleep, or everyday activity can accompany stress, but it can also point to a health problem. Pay attention to changes from your cat’s usual routine rather than judging whether it sleeps or plays “too much” by a general standard.

Overgrooming and reduced grooming can both occur alongside distress. These changes are not specific to a lack of attention; they may have medical or other behavioral causes. Note when the change started and whether you see other differences in your cat’s habits.

6. Having new litter-box or elimination changes
New accidents or other changes in elimination can accompany stress, but they should not be dismissed as spite, protest, or a bid for attention. A change in litter-box habits can have a health-related cause, so discuss it with a veterinarian.
7. Vocalizing more or behaving unusually
More frequent or different vocalizing can be one sign of a change in a cat’s well-being. Consider your cat’s normal vocal habits, age, and any other changes in behavior or health. A new pattern is more informative than the fact that one cat is simply more talkative than another.

Read your cat’s signals during interaction
Body language can help you decide whether contact is welcome. A tense crouch, flattened or turned ears, dilated pupils, a low or tucked tail, hiding, fleeing, or defensive vocalizing may indicate fear or distress. Turning away or avoiding your hand can be a request for space.

Keep interaction optional: pause when your cat moves away, stiffens, or otherwise signals that it is done.

Offer attention in ways your cat chooses
Positive, predictable interaction can include play, calm company, or gentle contact—if your cat welcomes it. Short, regular opportunities are often easier for a cat to anticipate than persistent attempts to engage. Follow your cat’s cues and let it end the interaction.
- Try interactive play with a wand toy, adjusting or stopping when your cat disengages or appears distressed.
- Spend time nearby without insisting on touch. Let your cat decide whether to approach.
- Offer safe hiding places, appealing resting spots, and elevated options if they suit your cat and home.
- Keep household resources accessible and separated where practical, particularly in homes with more than one cat.
- Consider food puzzles or other enrichment options if your cat enjoys them; no single item suits every cat.
These options support opportunities for natural behaviors, but buying an object is not a substitute for appropriate care, welcome interaction, or veterinary attention when needed.
Look for patterns and consider health causes
When you notice a change, record when it began and what was happening around that time. A move, new person or animal, changes to the household routine, or tension between cats may provide context. Also note whether eating, grooming, elimination, sleep, activity, or mobility has changed.

Because these behaviors are nonspecific, do not assume they mean your cat needs more affection. Contact a veterinarian about new or persistent changes, particularly when ordinary routines or health-related behaviors have shifted. A veterinary assessment can help determine whether a medical issue needs attention.
