A dog who loves fetch is not necessarily addicted to the ball. In an exploratory 2025 study, 33 of 105 dogs selected for high motivation to play with toys showed behaviors consistent with addictive-like tendencies. The result does not show how common the behavior is among dogs generally, and it is not a clinical diagnosis. What matters to an owner is whether a dog can disengage, respond to other activities, and stop before play harms everyday life or wellbeing.
What did the 2025 study find?
Researchers Alja Mazzini, Katja Senn, Federico Monteleone, and colleagues examined toy motivation using a behavioral test and an owner questionnaire. Their exploratory study, published in Scientific Reports on October 9, 2025, included 105 pet dogs selected for high play motivation; 33 displayed behaviors consistent with addictive-like tendencies. The study used addiction-related concepts such as craving, salience, mood modification, and reduced self-control as a research framework.

That figure describes this selected sample, not the proportion of all pet dogs that are “toy addicted.” Participants were recruited through social media, and the study was not a population-wide survey. The authors describe their findings as exploratory and call for further research; they did not diagnose a recognized clinical toy-addiction disorder.

Is my dog addicted to fetch?
Chasing, catching, carrying, and possessing a toy can be ordinary rewarding play. A dog being excited when a ball appears, by itself, does not establish a problem. The more useful question is how the dog behaves when the toy is unavailable or play is over.

The study included toy-choice, social-play, food-puzzle, inaccessible-toy, and cool-down tasks. Its focus was not simply whether dogs played enthusiastically, but also whether they tried persistently to regain an unavailable toy and whether they could attend to alternatives. The authors describe possible concern when a dog repeatedly seeks access, becomes less responsive to other stimuli or social contact, or continues despite overexertion or risk of injury.
How do I know if my dog is a ball junkie?
There is no validated owner checklist for diagnosing toy addiction. Use these questions as observations to discuss with a veterinarian, not as a pass-or-fail test:

- Can your dog disengage? When the game ends or the ball is put away, can the dog settle rather than persistently trying to get it back?
- Can your dog respond to alternatives? Does the dog remain able to notice people, food, social play, or other rewarding activities, or does the toy crowd them out?
- Does play disrupt daily life or continue despite strain? Consider whether the dog keeps playing despite tiredness, possible injury, or interference with ordinary activities.
These are interpretive questions informed by behaviors assessed in the study, not a diagnostic instrument. Similar patterns can have more than one explanation; behavior alone cannot establish its cause.

Why is my dog obsessed with balls?
The study explored toy motivation and behavior; it does not establish why an individual dog fixates on a ball. It also does not establish a breed ranking or show that any single cause explains persistent toy-seeking. A veterinarian can help assess the behavior in context, including whether a physical condition may be contributing.

When should I ask a veterinarian for help?
Talk with a veterinarian if toy-seeking is difficult to interrupt, causes distress, or substantially interferes with rest, social contact, or other normal activities. Repetitive behaviors can have physical as well as emotional causes, and medical conditions may produce similar signs. VCA’s veterinary guidance on compulsive disorders in dogs describes evaluating physical causes and, where appropriate, referral to a veterinary behaviorist. Avoid scolding; a professional plan may address frustration or anxiety and introduce alternative activities.

Notice whether your dog can stop, rest, respond to other cues, and enjoy activities beyond the toy. If those abilities are substantially affected, seek professional assessment rather than relying on a fixed number of throws or a universal fetch schedule. The study did not test a play protocol, establish a universally safe fetch duration, or show that a particular toy treats fixation.

Balls were one of the toy types offered in the study, and 45 dogs chose a ball as their preferred toy in the toy-choice task. That result does not compare ball brands or establish that a ball improves behavior; it only describes choices within the study’s selected sample.
