“Blowing coat” is a normal period of heavy shedding in which a dog releases large amounts of loose undercoat. It is especially common in many double-coated dogs during seasonal changes, but the timing and intensity vary with breed, coat type, daylight, indoor temperature, environment, and the individual dog.

You cannot stop a healthy dog’s normal hair cycle, but you can remove loose hair before it spreads through the house, reduce tangles, and spot skin problems early. The safest approach is coat-appropriate brushing, careful bathing and drying, and veterinary attention when shedding comes with skin changes, bald patches, or other signs of illness.

What does “blowing coat” mean?

A dog’s coat is constantly replacing old hairs with new ones. During a coat blow, that replacement becomes much more noticeable: the dog sheds substantial amounts of loose undercoat over a relatively short period.

Seasonal coat blows are most associated with spring and fall. Many double-coated dogs grow a denser insulating coat for colder weather and release some of it as conditions change. However, there is no universal shedding calendar. Dogs living indoors may shed more evenly throughout the year because artificial light and stable indoor temperatures can affect seasonal cues. Breed, coat density, age, health, and individual variation matter too.

Huskies, Akitas, Chow Chows, Australian Shepherds, Collies, Pomeranians, and Golden Retrievers are examples of breeds that may produce conspicuous undercoat during a heavy shed. That does not mean every dog of one of these breeds will blow coat at the same time, or that every dog with a double coat will have two dramatic shedding seasons.

Heavy loose hair by itself is usually normal. The important distinction is whether the dog is releasing dead hair evenly or losing the living coat in patches.

First identify your dog’s coat

Choose grooming tools according to the coat in front of you—not according to the most impressive product claim. “Brushing,” “de-shedding,” and “detangling” are related but different jobs:

  • Routine brushing removes dirt and loose hair, distributes natural oils, and gives you a chance to inspect the skin.
  • De-shedding targets loose undercoat during a heavy shed. It is not simply ordinary brushing performed more forcefully.
  • Detangling removes knots and mats. Knots should be addressed before using a rake or de-shedding edge.
Coat or grooming need Tools that may help Important limitation
Short or smooth coat Rubber grooming brush, hound mitt, or bristle brush Aggressive undercoat tools may provide little benefit and can irritate skin if overused.
Dense double coat Slicker brush, steel comb, coat rake, or coat-specific de-shedding tool The tool must reach loose undercoat without scraping or cutting healthy topcoat.
Long or feathered coat Slicker brush followed by a steel comb Prevent and remove tangles before they become mats.
Matted coat Professional assessment or careful detangling with appropriate tools Do not drag a de-shedding blade or rake through mats.

For a dense, shedding undercoat, a dog undercoat rake is a logical category to compare. A coat-specific de-shedding brush may be a better fit for some dogs. For long, tangle-prone coats, a slicker brush or steel comb may be more useful than a rake alone. These are tools, not medical treatments, and no single design suits every coat.

A practical shedding-season routine

1. Set up a calm grooming area

Choose a place that is easy to clean and give your dog a nonslip surface. Have the brush, comb, waste bag, treats, and—if bathing—dog-formulated shampoo ready before you begin. Grooming is easier when the dog is calm rather than already frustrated by a long session.

Start with a few minutes and reward cooperation. Several short sessions are generally preferable to restraining a worried dog and brushing until either of you gives up.

2. Brush several times a week during the peak shed

As a practical starting point, some dogs do well with five to ten minutes of brushing three or four times per week during a heavy shed. A very dense coat may need brief daily sessions, while a short-coated dog may need much less. Treat that schedule as a starting point, not a rule.

Brush in the direction of hair growth using gentle, controlled pressure. Work in sections rather than repeatedly brushing the same patch. On a long or dense coat, use a slicker brush to loosen surface tangles and then pass a comb through the coat to check whether you have reached the undercoat. If the comb catches, stop and investigate instead of pulling.

Inspect commonly missed areas as you work:

  • behind the ears;
  • under the collar;
  • armpits and groin;
  • behind the legs;
  • around the tail; and
  • any area where harnesses, clothing, or bedding rub.

Stop if your dog shows pain, repeatedly tries to escape, growls, or develops redness. A grooming session should not become a test of endurance.

3. Deal with tangles before de-shedding

Loose undercoat can become packed into tangles, particularly in feathered or dense coats. Separate small tangles gently with your fingers or an appropriate detangling tool. Do not force a rake or de-shedding edge through a mat: that can pull the skin, break hair, and cause pain.

Large, tight, or skin-level mats are best handled by a professional groomer or veterinarian. Cutting mats at home is risky because canine skin can be drawn up into the mat and accidentally cut.

4. Bathe only when bathing makes sense

A bath can help release some loose hair, but it does not replace regular brushing. Bathe according to your dog’s skin, coat, lifestyle, and veterinary or groomer guidance rather than following a fixed shedding-season schedule. Dogs with skin disease, allergies, persistent odor, or frequent irritation may need a specifically directed bathing plan.

Use products made for dogs, such as a dog-formulated grooming shampoo. Human shampoo and unsuitable products can irritate canine skin. A shedding shampoo should not be treated as a cure for unexplained hair loss, itching, infection, or allergies.

Rinse thoroughly. Dense coats must also be dried thoroughly, because moisture trapped close to the skin can contribute to tangling and irritation. If your dog is difficult to handle, has a dense coat, or has severe mats, professional grooming may be safer than attempting a full bath and blow-dry at home.

Should you shave a double-coated dog?

Usually, no—not as a solution to seasonal shedding. Shaving does not stop the biological process that produces and releases undercoat. It also removes the protective topcoat, which helps shield the skin from sunlight and environmental exposure. The coat may grow back unevenly or with a changed texture, and a shaved dog can be more vulnerable to sunburn and some skin problems.

Control the hair in your home

Grooming the dog before loose hair falls onto furniture is the most effective first step. Then manage the remaining hair as an environmental-cleanup problem:

  • Use a washable blanket on favorite beds, sofas, or car seats.
  • Vacuum floors and upholstery more frequently during the peak shed.
  • Keep a lint roller or reusable hair-removal tool near high-traffic furniture.
  • Wash bedding regularly and clean grooming tools outside or over an easy-to-clean surface.
  • Use a designated grooming area so loose hair is concentrated rather than distributed throughout the house.

A pet-hair vacuum or upholstery attachment can help with cleanup, but it controls hair after it has been shed; it does not change the dog’s coat cycle. Frequent brushing also gives you an opportunity to look for fleas, flea dirt, irritation, or other abnormalities.

When heavy shedding may signal a health problem

Normal coat blowing generally produces loose hair without bald patches, marked inflammation, or significant discomfort. Contact a veterinarian if shedding is accompanied by any of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • bald spots or clearly thinning areas;
  • red, scaly, crusted, swollen, painful, or discolored skin;
  • persistent scratching, licking, chewing, or rubbing;
  • sores, discharge, unusual odor, or suspected infection;
  • visible fleas, mites, or other parasites;
  • dull, brittle, broken, or unusually easy-to-pull-out hair;
  • weight change, increased thirst or urination, lethargy, or other whole-body changes; or
  • a sudden or unusual change from your dog’s established shedding pattern.

Possible causes of abnormal hair loss include parasites, bacterial or fungal infection, allergies, endocrine disease such as hypothyroidism or Cushing’s disease, nutritional problems, medication effects, pregnancy or lactation, immune-mediated disease, trauma, and other dermatologic conditions. Shedding alone cannot distinguish among them.

Depending on the signs, a veterinarian may recommend a physical examination, flea or parasite evaluation, skin scraping, culture, blood or urine testing, or a biopsy. Do not assume that excessive shedding is “just seasonal,” and do not start supplements, a restrictive allergy diet, medicated shampoo, or prescription treatment without veterinary guidance.

When to book a professional groomer

Consider a professional or mobile groomer when your dog has severe mats, a very dense coat, a coat you cannot safely dry, or handling needs that make home grooming stressful or unsafe. A groomer can remove routine coat buildup, but skin lesions, painful mats, suspected infection, and unexplained hair loss belong with a veterinarian. For a dog that becomes fearful or aggressive during grooming, ask your veterinarian about a safe handling plan rather than forcing the process.

A simple checklist for the next coat blow

  1. Identify whether your dog has a smooth, double, long, or tangle-prone coat.
  2. Choose a tool that matches that coat.
  3. Brush gently for a few minutes several times per week, increasing frequency only if your dog tolerates it.
  4. Check behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, groin, behind the legs, and around the tail.
  5. Detangle before using a rake or de-shedding tool.
  6. Never use a de-shedding edge over mats, wounds, sores, or irritated skin.
  7. Bathe only with dog-formulated products and dry dense coats completely.
  8. Do not shave a healthy double coat simply to reduce hair.
  9. Brush before vacuuming and use washable bedding or furniture covers.
  10. Call the veterinarian for baldness, inflamed skin, persistent itch, systemic symptoms, or an unusual shedding change.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a dog blowing coat last?

There is no fixed duration. A heavy shed may be concentrated over several weeks, but timing and intensity vary with coat type, breed, daylight, indoor environment, and the individual dog. Some dogs shed more evenly throughout the year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can brushing stop my dog from shedding?

No. Brushing removes loose hair before it lands on furniture and floors, but it does not stop normal hair replacement. It can also help prevent tangles and reveal skin problems early.

Is a de-shedding tool safe for every dog?

No. De-shedding tools are most relevant to dogs with a loose shedding undercoat. Use gentle pressure, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and do not use one over mats, wounds, sores, or irritated skin. A rubber brush, slicker brush, or comb may be more suitable for another coat.

Should I give my dog supplements for excessive shedding?

Not without veterinary advice. Excessive hair loss can have many causes, and supplements may delay proper diagnosis or be inappropriate for the dog’s condition. Have a veterinarian assess bald patches, skin changes, persistent itching, or sudden changes in shedding.

Will shaving my dog make the shedding stop?

No. Shaving does not stop the underlying hair cycle and is not a routine solution for a healthy double-coated dog. It can remove the protective topcoat and increase exposure to sun and skin problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

A dog blowing coat is usually experiencing normal seasonal undercoat replacement, not an illness. Match the tool to the coat, brush in short gentle sessions, remove tangles before de-shedding, bathe and dry carefully, and manage loose hair in the home. If shedding comes with bald patches, inflamed or painful skin, persistent itching, systemic changes, or a sudden departure from your dog’s normal pattern, arrange a veterinary examination instead of treating it as an ordinary coat blow.
