A sneezing kitten most often has an upper respiratory infection (URI), commonly caused by feline herpesvirus or feline calicivirus, with several bacteria also able to contribute. Sneezing alone cannot tell you which one is responsible. What matters most is what else you see: discharge from the eyes or nose, coughing, mouth sores, poor appetite, low energy, and above all any difficulty breathing. Breathing trouble is an emergency-level warning sign, and any kitten with respiratory signs should be examined by a veterinarian.
Why sneezing usually points to an infection
Sneezing is a symptom of irritation in the nose and throat, and in young cats the most common irritant is an infection. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Cornell Feline Health Center describes upper respiratory infections as a frequent reason kittens and cats in shelters, multi-cat homes, and breeding settings develop these signs. Because several different organisms produce nearly identical symptoms, a veterinarian usually works from the whole picture rather than the sneeze itself.
Five possible causes
The categories below are ways to think about the problem, not a diagnosis. Infections frequently overlap, and a kitten can have more than one.
1. Feline herpesvirus (feline viral rhinotracheitis)
Young and adolescent cats are especially susceptible. Herpesvirus can cause sneezing, nasal or eye discharge, conjunctivitis (inflamed eyes), fever, lethargy, and corneal ulcers. Cornell states that the infection is lifelong and that flare-ups can recur, often during stress. Its figures for the virus are broad: up to 97% of cats are exposed in their lifetime, up to 80% of exposed cats develop a lifelong infection, and up to 45% of infected cats periodically shed the virus, usually when stressed. These are Cornell’s reported estimates, published on its Feline Health Center pages and accessed in 2026, not measurements from a single study.

2. Feline calicivirus
Calicivirus is a common and contagious cause of feline upper respiratory signs. Sneezing, nasal congestion, fever, and sometimes drooling can occur. Mouth ulcers are a characteristic clue in some cases, which is why a kitten with sneezing and oral sores deserves prompt attention. Even so, the presence of mouth ulcers does not confirm calicivirus on its own, and the same signs can appear with herpesvirus.
3. Bacterial infection or co-infection
Bacteria can cause respiratory disease alone or alongside viruses. Cornell lists Bordetella bronchiseptica, Mycoplasma felis, and Chlamydia felis among organisms that cause or contribute to feline respiratory disease. Bordetella is of particular concern where many cats are housed closely together, such as shelters, catteries, and rescues. Because a bacterial infection can follow a viral one, a kitten that seems to be getting worse rather than better should be reassessed.

4. Environmental irritation
Dust and airborne chemicals can irritate a cat’s eyes and airways, and they are reasonable things to consider. However, the Cornell material that addresses this topic is specifically about conjunctivitis, and it does not establish that household irritants or allergies are a common cause of sneezing in kittens. Treat them as a possibility to discuss with your veterinarian after infection has been considered, not as the likely answer on their own.
5. Less common structural problems, such as nasopharyngeal polyps
Nasopharyngeal polyps are growths in the back of the nose and throat that occur in young cats, and sneezing is among the possible signs. Cornell’s discussion of these polyps quotes James Flanders, DVM, associate professor of surgery at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine: “We believe that this type of polyp is caused by inflammatory changes secondary to infection with a respiratory virus.” Dr. Flanders presents this as a belief rather than proven fact, and the available information does not establish how often polyps explain sneezing. A persistent, one-sided, or unusual pattern of sneezing is a reason to ask for an examination rather than wait.

Signs that change the urgency
Upper respiratory infections commonly cause clear or colored nasal or eye discharge, coughing, conjunctivitis, mouth ulcers, lethargy, and reduced appetite. Cornell notes that serious breathing difficulty is uncommon but dangerous. It also gives a reference point for resting breathing: it should not exceed 35 breaths per minute. Counting is useful only as a rough check; if breathing looks labored, open-mouthed, or effortful, do not wait to count.
- Emergency: open-mouth breathing, straining to breathe, blue or gray gums, or breathing that looks labored at rest.
- Same-day veterinary attention: the kitten stops eating, seems markedly lethargic or weak, has a fever, or has eyes that are closed, painful, or producing thick discharge.
- Prompt appointment: sneezing with nasal or eye discharge, coughing, or mouth sores, even if the kitten is still eating and playing.
- Routine but worth raising: occasional sneezing without other signs that continues for more than a few days, or sneezing from one side of the nose only.
Cornell’s calicivirus guidance advises that pet owners bring a cat to a veterinarian when respiratory disease signs appear. The available guidance does not set a universal number of days to wait before a visit, so do not rely on a timing rule to decide whether a kitten needs to be seen.

Supportive care at home
Cornell emphasizes good nutrition and hydration during respiratory infections, because a kitten that is not eating or drinking can deteriorate quickly. Its calicivirus guidance also describes keeping the nose and eyes clean with a soft, damp cloth and using a vaporizer or saline nose drops to loosen nasal secretions. These steps ease symptoms; they do not identify or cure the cause.
- Keep the kitten warm, quiet, and away from drafts.
- Offer food it likes, warmed to body temperature to improve smell and appetite, and keep fresh water available.
- Gently wipe discharge from the eyes and nose.
- Ask your veterinarian before using any saline drops, vaporizer, or other product, and confirm the right amount and frequency for a kitten.
Do not give human cold or allergy medicines, and do not give any medication without a veterinarian’s dose for that kitten’s weight and age.

Prevention and vaccination
Cornell recommends feline herpesvirus vaccination for all cats. Vaccination does not prevent every infection, but it can reduce disease severity and viral shedding. Keeping kittens away from sick cats, minimizing shared bowls and litter, and reducing stress during the first weeks in a new home also limit spread, because stress is a known trigger for herpesvirus flare-ups.
What is not established
There is no reliable way to diagnose a kitten’s sneezing from a description alone, and a single sneeze is not a reason for alarm. The sources do not establish a universal waiting period, a proven leading role for allergies or household irritants, or how often polyps account for sneezing. An accurate diagnosis usually requires a physical examination and, when needed, tests on nasal or eye samples, which a veterinarian can choose based on the kitten’s signs and history.
When you call, describe what you have seen: how long the sneezing has lasted, whether there is discharge and what color it is, whether the kitten is eating and drinking, whether the eyes or mouth look sore, and whether the kitten has been in contact with other cats.
