Yes, a dog can contract leptospirosis, and no dog is automatically protected by its age, breed, home, or lifestyle. Risk rises with specific exposures: contact with urine-contaminated water or soil, wildlife and rodents, farm animals, and contact with other dogs in parks, boarding facilities, or training settings. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) identifies the Midwest, East, and Southwest of the United States as hotspots for dogs, and describes late summer and fall as generally higher-risk periods, while noting that timing varies by region and climate. Cats can become ill, but the AVMA says this happens only rarely. If you think your pet may have been exposed, or it shows signs of illness, contact your veterinarian.
Who is at risk
The AVMA’s 2025 client brochure states that all dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, sex, geographic location, lifestyle, and season. What changes from dog to dog is the amount of exposure. A dog that swims in a pond, sniffs around a flooded drainage ditch, or spends time where rodents or wildlife are active has a different risk profile from one that rarely leaves a fenced yard, but neither is immune.
The bacteria that cause the disease are shed in urine, and infection generally happens after contact with urine-contaminated water or soil. The table below groups the exposures the AVMA lists as relevant.
| Exposure | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Stagnant or slow-moving water | Ponds, puddles, marshes, and slow streams can carry urine from infected animals, and the AVMA advises against drinking or swimming in these waters. |
| Wildlife and farm animals | Animals that carry the bacteria can contaminate the ground, water, and vegetation a dog encounters. |
| Rodents and rodent carcasses | Wild rodents are a recognized source of infection, and dead animals are included in the AVMA’s advice to limit contact. |
| Dog-contact settings | Parks, boarding facilities, and training classes bring dogs together, and the AVMA lists these settings as risk factors. |
| Contaminated food, bedding, or tissue | The AVMA also describes these as possible routes, though they are less often the focus of owner guidance. |
Where and when risk is higher
The AVMA says leptospirosis occurs worldwide and can occur anywhere. It is more common in warm climates with high annual rainfall, and outbreaks have been reported after heavy rainfall and flooding. For U.S. dogs, the brochure identifies the Midwest, East, and Southwest as hotspots, and describes late summer and fall as generally higher-risk periods. Those seasonal patterns are general; local conditions in a given year can differ, so a veterinarian familiar with your area is the best guide to current risk.

Cats
Cats are not a major concern in the AVMA’s guidance. The brochure states that although cats also may become ill, this happens only rarely. It does not give a precise feline risk estimate, so owners should not assume cats are completely outside the picture, but dogs are the species the brochure focuses on for ongoing risk.
Recognizing possible illness
Infection can range from no visible signs to severe, life-threatening disease. Dogs that show no symptoms may still shed bacteria in their urine. When a dog does become ill, the signs listed in AVMA materials include:

- Abdominal pain and diarrhea
- Jaundice (yellowing of the gums, skin, or eyes)
- Dehydration, increased drinking or urination, and weight loss
- Difficulty breathing, bleeding problems, or fluid in the chest or abdomen
These signs overlap with many other conditions, so they cannot be used to confirm or rule out leptospirosis at home. Kidney or liver failure can develop. Contact a veterinarian promptly if a dog is ill and may have had relevant exposure, and seek urgent care for jaundice, marked weakness, abnormal bleeding, or breathing difficulty.
Diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis depends on the veterinarian’s examination and the animal’s exposure and travel history, which help decide what tests are appropriate. The AVMA describes blood and urine tests, X-rays, and ultrasound as possible evaluations. Treatment generally includes antibiotics and supportive care. Severe cases can require fluid therapy, oxygen, mechanical breathing support, or dialysis, and may need intensive care. Early treatment improves the chances of recovery, but permanent kidney or liver damage remains possible.

Vaccination is a veterinarian-guided decision
The AVMA’s 2022 prevention brochure describes an initial series of two vaccinations followed by annual boosters as the typical schedule. That is a general description, not a personal prescription. Whether vaccination fits your dog depends on its exposure, local conditions, and overall health, so confirm the recommendation with your veterinarian rather than relying on a schedule from a brochure.
Reducing your dog’s exposure
Vaccination is one layer of protection. The AVMA also recommends the following steps to lower exposure:

- Keep dogs away from animal carcasses.
- Be especially careful after heavy rainfall or flooding, when outbreaks have been reported.
Household transmission and urine hygiene
Spread from an infected pet to a person is possible, but the AVMA describes it as much less common than other routes. Practical urine hygiene is the main protection, and it does not require alarm. If your dog has been diagnosed, follow the veterinarian’s instructions, then:
- Give prescribed antibiotics for the full course and follow the infection-control advice your veterinarian provides.
- Avoid direct contact with urine.
- Wear gloves when cleaning up urine.
- Disinfect indoor urine promptly.
- Encourage your dog to urinate away from standing water and from places people and other animals use.
- Wash your hands after handling the dog.
What the current guidance settles, and what it does not
The AVMA’s 2025 client brochure and 2022 prevention brochure give clear owner guidance on exposure, symptoms, and hygiene. They do not establish how common leptospirosis is in a particular neighborhood, how much risk an individual dog carries, or whether there is an active outbreak near you. Those questions are best answered by a veterinarian who knows your area and your pet’s daily activities.
