9Lives is a low-cost cat food brand sold in dry and wet formats. A April 2026 review from Cats.com scored the brand 32 out of 60 (5.3 out of 10), which that site grades D. That grade comes from Cats.com’s own six-category framework. It is not a regulatory rating, a veterinary assessment, or a measure of how any individual cat will do on the food. Whether 9Lives is a good choice depends on the exact formula on your bag, your cat’s health and life stage, what your cat will actually eat, and how much you can spend each day.
What the Cats.com review scored
Cats.com rated 9Lives across six categories, each out of 10. The reviewer says she bought three recipes (two dry, one wet), checked the brand’s background, manufacturing claims and recall history, and went through each formula’s ingredients. The scores below are Cats.com’s judgments, not measured outcomes.
| Category (Cats.com) | Score (out of 10) | What the category covers in this review |
|---|---|---|
| Species-appropriateness | 4 | How well the formulas match what the reviewer considers cat-appropriate nutrition |
| Ingredient quality | 4 | Ingredient-by-ingredient assessment of the reviewed recipes |
| Product variety | 7 | Breadth of dry and wet options in the line |
| Price | 8 | Economy pricing, judged as favorable by the reviewer |
| Customer experience | 5 | Smell, texture, cat appeal and customer comments |
| Recall history | 4 | Recall events the reviewer identified (see the recall section below) |
How to read a brand-level score
A single score for a whole brand hides large differences between formulas. The reviewer examined three specific recipes, and her ingredient and nutrient notes apply to those recipes only. A brand that has a weak ingredient profile in one dry formula may have a different profile in another, and the wet line is assessed separately from the dry line. Use the score as a way to organize your own questions, not as a verdict on every 9Lives product.
The framework also weights categories that matter to some owners more than others. Price and variety can offset weaker ingredient scores in the total. If your priorities are a specific protein source, a particular life stage or a medical diet, the category totals may matter less than the label in front of you.

Formula check: the three products the reviewer examined
Ingredients and guaranteed analysis change between formulas and over time, so always check the current package. The table compares what the official product pages and the Cats.com review state for the products named in the review. Where a value was not published in the sources, the cell says so.

| Dry-matter fiber (Cats.com calculation) | 3.41% | Not stated | Not stated |
| Dry-matter carbohydrate (Cats.com calculation) | 46.55% | 45.56% | Not stated |
Cats.com describes the Daily Essentials kibble as moderate in protein, low in fat, high in carbohydrate and plant-heavy. Those characterizations rest on the numbers above. Dry-matter figures remove water so that dry foods can be compared with each other; they do not tell you how a cat will digest the food or whether the food suits a particular condition.
9Lives Daily Essentials
The official Daily Essentials dry-food page lists whole ground corn, chicken by-product meal, soybean meal, corn protein meal, whole wheat, animal fat and meat and bone meal, followed by additional ingredients that include colors and BHA. Corn, wheat and soy appear high on the list, so plant ingredients make up a large share of this recipe. Animal-derived ingredients are present, but they are not the first items listed.
9Lives PLUS High Protein
The brand’s PLUS High Protein page states 35% protein and positions the formula for lean muscle and energy. Cats.com reviewed a formula with 315 kcal per cup and calculated its dry-matter values from that formula. The manufacturer’s positioning and the reviewer’s ingredient analysis are separate things; a higher protein claim does not automatically mean a higher-quality protein source. Read the ingredient list on your bag to see which protein ingredients are used.

9Lives Indoor Essentials
Indoor Essentials has its own ingredient list on the official page. It includes whole ground corn, chicken by-product meal, soybean meal, meat and bone meal, whole wheat, corn protein meal, animal fat, soybean hulls and salmon meal. Salmon meal is the notable addition compared with Daily Essentials. The Daily Essentials numbers do not describe this formula, and the review does not publish a full guaranteed analysis for it.
Ingredients worth understanding
Ingredient lists are a starting point, not a safety test. They show what goes into a formula and in what order, and they help you decide whether a food fits your priorities. Several terms on 9Lives labels come up often.
By-product meal
Chicken by-product meal is a rendered product made from the parts of the chicken other than the muscle meat, such as organs. Pet food regulators permit it, and many cat foods use it. Owners who want a single named muscle meat as the main protein often prefer a food that names the meat more specifically. That preference is a matter of choice, not a finding that by-product meal is harmful.
Grain, corn and soy
Whole ground corn, corn protein meal, whole wheat and soybean meal are plant-based ingredients that supply protein and carbohydrate in dry food. Cats are obligate carnivores, which is why Cats.com scored species-appropriateness low. Whether a particular amount of plant ingredient is acceptable for a healthy adult cat is a question for your veterinarian, especially if your cat has a digestive or weight concern.

Colors and BHA
The Daily Essentials ingredient list includes colors and BHA. BHA is a synthetic antioxidant used to preserve fats in food. Colors are added for appearance. Both appear in many commercial pet foods. Cats.com’s ingredient quality score reflects its preference for fewer additives, and owners who prefer to avoid synthetic preservatives may reasonably choose a different product.
Price and cost per day
Cats.com describes 9Lives as economy-priced. Its estimate for a 10-pound cat following the feeding guidelines is about $0.10 per day for dry food and $0.77 per day for wet food. These are the reviewer’s estimates, not current shelf prices, and they will shift with package size and location.
| Format | Cats.com estimate (10-pound cat, per day) | Same estimate across a year |
|---|---|---|
| Dry food | About $0.10 | About $36 |
| Wet food | About $0.77 | About $281 |
To check the cost for your own cat, divide the package price by the number of days the package lasts at your cat’s actual portion. Use the feeding amount printed on your package, adjusted by your veterinarian for your cat’s weight and activity. A cheap food that your cat eats only partly, or that needs supplementing, may cost more per day than the table suggests.
Product range and availability
The official catalogue shows dry and wet products, including Daily Essentials, Indoor Essentials, PLUS High Protein and wet variety packs. Two PLUS launches had target dates that have now passed. The brand said PLUS Urinary Tract Health was expected on shelves in fall 2025, and PLUS High Protein in early 2026. This article did not confirm whether either product is in stock at your retailer, so check the current shelf or the brand’s product page before you plan a purchase.

Recall history
Cats.com identifies two 9Lives canned-food recall events. The reviewer notes that she did not confirm either event against primary FDA or manufacturer notices, so treat these details as the reviewer’s account.
January 2017: Meaty Paté varieties
Cats.com reports a January 2017 recall of Meaty Paté varieties. The recall was expanded eight days later to additional flavors. The reviewer says the 2017 event also involved EverPet and Special Kitty products.
December 2018: two canned varieties
Cats.com reports a December 2018 recall of two canned varieties for potentially low thiamine (vitamin B1). Thiamine deficiency is a serious nutritional problem in cats, so a recall for low thiamine is a significant event. Cats.com does not give a full lot-level scope in the material used here.
These events are older than the review and do not by themselves establish the brand’s current recall status. Before you buy, check the FDA’s recall listings for pet food and the contact information printed on your package, and confirm whether any notice covers your product’s lot code.

What the brand says about its food
The 9Lives about page states: “So we make sure all 9Lives cat food varieties are complete and balanced to help them live well.” That is the brand’s own description. It is not independent testing. On the package, look for an AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement, usually near the feeding directions. That statement shows which life stage the food was formulated for and how that claim was established, which is more useful than the general about-page wording.
Acceptance and customer comments
Cats.com’s customer experience score (5 out of 10) draws on smell, texture, cat appeal and customer comments. Individual comments are anecdotes. They can show that some cats refuse a flavor, that a texture is unpopular or that a product was switched too quickly, but they do not prove that a food is safe or caused a health problem. If your cat has a specific reaction after eating a food, stop the food and speak with your veterinarian rather than relying on reviews.
Transition slowly when you change foods. Mix the new food into the old one over about seven to ten days, increasing the new share gradually. A cat that refuses the new food outright may need a different texture or flavor from the same line, which is one reason the product range matters.
A practical checklist before you buy
- Confirm the exact product name and format (dry or wet) and read the current package, not an older listing.
- Find the Guaranteed Analysis panel and note protein, fat, fiber and moisture. Compare on a dry-matter basis if you are choosing between dry foods.
- Read the ingredient list in order. Note the first five ingredients, any by-product meals, and any additives you want to avoid.
- Check for an AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement and the life stage it covers (adult maintenance, all life stages, or growth).
- Calculate cost per day using your cat’s real portion, not the shelf price.
- Check the lot code against current FDA recall listings before you open a new bag.
- Plan a gradual transition over about a week or more and watch stool quality, appetite and weight.
When to involve your veterinarian
Cat food choice matters more when a cat has a medical condition. Kidney disease, urinary tract problems, diabetes, obesity, food allergy and inflammatory bowel disease all call for specific diets, and a retail food that suits a healthy adult cat may not suit these needs. Ask your veterinarian which nutrient targets matter for your cat and whether a 9Lives product meets them. This article cannot make that determination for an individual animal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSeek prompt veterinary care if your cat stops eating for more than a day, vomits or has diarrhea that persists, loses weight, drinks and urinates much more than usual, or shows signs of straining in the litter box.
Who 9Lives may suit, and who should look elsewhere
9Lives may suit an owner who needs a low-cost option, wants a range of dry and wet textures, and has a healthy adult cat that accepts the flavor. It is a weaker fit for owners who prioritize named single-meat protein sources, low plant content, a specific additive profile, or a diet prescribed for a medical condition. Use the formula table and the checklist above to test those priorities against the exact product you are considering.
For a specific product, the Daily Essentials dry formula is the one the Cats.com review examined in detail, so it is the most direct reference point for the ingredient and nutrient figures above. Confirm that the bag you buy matches the formula named here.
