Veterinarians found more than 30 lead or projectile fragments embedded in its body, along with broken teeth and compromised vision. Reports say the animal regained some vision and displayed behaviors associated with life in the wild before its release.
What happened to the jaguar in the rescue video?
On October 1, 2025, a riverside resident reported seeing a male jaguar swimming exhausted in the Rio Negro near Manaus, in Brazil’s Amazonas state.

Why was the jaguar in the river?
The reason has not been established in the public reporting reviewed. The footage begins after the jaguar is already in the water and does not show what happened beforehand.
Fleeing a hunter has appeared as a theory, but the firearm injuries do not prove that explanation. It would be inaccurate to state a cause for entering the river as fact.
Were the jaguar’s gunshot injuries real?
Yes. Veterinary examinations confirmed firearm-related injuries, broken teeth, compromised vision and more than 30 lead or projectile fragments embedded in the jaguar’s body.
Some follow-up accounts describe around 30 fragments, while another reports approximately 36. The available reporting does not establish that the animal was hit by 30 separate bullets, so the phrase “shot 30 times” overstates what is known.
