The challenge, called the Dog Jog, is still upcoming; its route is planned from Point Pedro in the north to Dondra in the south.
What is the Dog Jog?
The Dog Jog is WECare Worldwide founder Dr Janey Lowes’s planned 620 km run across Sri Lanka. WECare’s current campaign page describes it as a 22-day challenge, beginning 9 October 2026. Those are the charity’s published plans, not a completed event. WECare Worldwide
The route is Point Pedro at the island’s northern end to Dondra in the south. The charity’s published distance is 620 km, or approximately 385 miles. Some earlier show notes gave a different distance and start date; for current logistics, WECare’s campaign details are the more recent published plan.
Why is Janey Lowes taking on the run?
Lowes is raising money for WECare Worldwide’s planned purpose-built veterinary hospital and veterinary training facility for street dogs. Her campaign also describes a rehabilitation centre as part of the proposed facility. Why the charity says a new facility is needed
WECare says its existing hospital has outgrown its capacity and that animals are turned away. That is the charity’s account of the need behind the fundraising, rather than an independently audited assessment. The BBC reported a £1.6 million figure for the proposed hospital, but WECare’s official campaign page does not publish that cost. BBC report
Who is Janey Lowes and what does WECare Worldwide do?
Lowes is a veterinarian from County Durham and founded WECare Worldwide. The charity describes itself as a UK-registered charity (number 1162386) and a Sri Lankan NGO. Alongside hospital care, WECare carries out community CNVR work: catch, neuter, vaccinate and release. The charity reports that it neutered 5,773 dogs through this work in 2025. Its website also displays cumulative totals of 33,607 sick and injured animals treated and 39,250 rabies vaccinations; those counters are undated and should not be read as annual figures.
What has Lowes said about running?
Lowes’s JustGiving campaign says she had not run in 15 years before preparing for the challenge, and that she is fitting training around full-time work in tropical heat and humidity. She writes that running does not come easily to her and that she has never experienced a runner’s high. The phrase “hates running” appears in the headline, but the available campaign wording supports the more specific description of running as something she finds difficult.
