Jemma Hart, 45, was found at her home in Swindon on 29 January 2024 after neighbours raised concerns when they had not seen or heard from her for weeks. Reports of the inquest say she died by suicide and that injuries caused by her two dachshunds occurred after her death. The dogs did not cause her death, according to those reports.

What happened to Jemma Hart?

Swindon and Wiltshire Coroner’s Court heard that Hart was found during a welfare check at her home on Wilmot Close, in The Prinnels area of Swindon. Neighbours had contacted police because they were concerned about her welfare. The local account from Wiltshire999s reported that she was 45 and that Area Coroner Ian Singleton concluded she had taken her own life. Wiltshire999s’ report of the inquest was published on 11 March 2025.

PerthNow’s account, published on 12 March 2025, likewise said neighbours sought a police welfare check after weeks without seeing or hearing from Hart. It reported that her body was found on 29 January 2024. The reports do not establish the exact time of her death, so they do not support a precise interval between death and discovery.

When did the dogs’ injuries occur?

The inquest reporting says the dogs caused injuries to Hart’s body after she had died. Wiltshire999s quoted Singleton as saying, “Jemma was found in her home with injuries caused by dogs after she died.” PerthNow also reported that her body had been eaten after death. These accounts distinguish the condition in which Hart was found from the cause of her death: neither report says the dogs killed her.

What was reported about the dogs?

Hart had two dachshunds. PerthNow reported that her son told the inquest she got Frankie in 2022 and Millie the following year. He said she regularly walked them near Lydiard Park and described the dogs as central to her life. These are family details reported by PerthNow.

When Hart was discovered, one dog was dead and the other was distressed, according to both reports. The available accounts do not say what later happened to the surviving dog. The dogs’ behaviour after Hart’s death should not be taken as evidence that they were aggressive.

The reports mention health or mobility difficulties and physical pain; PerthNow also mentions insomnia. They do not establish a motive or a single explanation for Hart’s death, and those circumstances should not be presented as one.

What is known—and what remains unclear

  • Established in the reporting: Hart was found at home in Swindon on 29 January 2024 after neighbours raised welfare concerns; reports say she died by suicide and that dog-caused injuries happened after death.
  • Not established in the available accounts: the exact time of death, the precise sequence or duration of the dogs’ post-death behaviour, and what happened later to the surviving dog.

The accounts available here are news reports of the inquest rather than a directly accessible transcript or post-mortem document. Exact quotations above are attributed to the reporting that reproduced them.
