Hoplisoma julii is the current scientific name for the fish long sold as the Julii cory or Corydoras julii. Successful care means a clean, spacious bottom footprint; a group of at least four to six; stable, suitable water; cover; and deliberate feeding with sinking foods rather than aquarium leftovers. Breeding is usually attempted by conditioning the group, making repeated large changes with cooler water while increasing oxygenation and flow, then protecting the eggs and feeding the fry as soon as their yolk sacs are absorbed.

Identification deserves caution. Many fish labelled “Julii cory” in shops are actually the similar Hoplisoma trilineatum. Head markings can suggest the difference, but a store label or pattern alone does not prove the species.

What a Julii cory is—and why the name can mislead

The revised species profile from Seriously Fish uses Hoplisoma julii and notes that the species was moved from Corydoras to Hoplisoma in the 2024 classification. “Corydoras julii” remains a familiar older name in aquarium shops and hobby literature. FishBase records the species from the lower Amazon and coastal rivers of northeastern Brazil; the profile specifies records in Piauí, Maranhão, Pará and Amapá (FishBase).

Adult standard length is listed as 55 mm by the Seriously Fish profile. These are peaceful, bottom-oriented shoaling catfish, not a substitute for filtration or maintenance. They forage across the substrate and may occasionally rise to gulp air because Corydoras are facultative air breathers. Surfacing by itself does not diagnose poor care, but it is never a reason to neglect dissolved oxygen or water quality.

Recognising a likely true H. julii

Seriously Fish says true H. julii typically has numerous small, distinct spots on the head. H. trilineatum more often shows worm-like markings, although some H. trilineatum are spotted too. That overlap makes the pattern a clue rather than a definitive visual test.

Identification clue What it can tell you What it cannot prove
Many small, separate head spots Consistent with the usual description of H. julii It does not rule out a spotted H. trilineatum
Worm-like head markings More typical of H. trilineatum It does not establish the identity of every individual
Collection locality or breeder provenance Provides stronger evidence when documented A shop label without provenance is not verification

When choosing fish, ask whether the seller knows the collection locality or breeder source, and inspect several individuals under good light. If the identity matters, record the provenance rather than assuming that “Julii” on the tank label is conclusive.

Aquarium requirements at a glance

The following figures are the guidance in the 2026 Seriously Fish species profile, not a universal guarantee for every water supply, population or source. Keep the range stable rather than chasing a number with abrupt adjustments.

Requirement Profile guidance Practical meaning
Minimum base 90 × 30 cm (36 × 12 in) Prioritise floor area for foraging; height is less important than footprint.
Approximate minimum volume 81 L (21 US gal) Use a larger aquarium if keeping a bigger group or community.
Temperature 20–26°C (68–79°F) Use a reliable heater and avoid rapid swings.
pH 5.5–7.5 Test your source and aquarium water; stability matters.
Hardness 2–12 dGH Confirm hardness with a test rather than inferring it from pH.
Group size At least four to six A group supports normal social behaviour better than a solitary fish.
Substrate Fine sand preferred; clean rounded gravel acceptable Keep any substrate free of accumulated waste and sharp edges.

Setting up the tank step by step

  1. Start with the footprint. Provide at least 90 × 30 cm of base area and leave open sections where the group can search the bottom together.
  2. Choose the substrate. Fine sand matches the profile’s preference. Clean, rounded gravel is an alternative only when it is kept scrupulously clean and has no sharp pieces that can damage mouths or barbels.
  3. Add secure cover. Use plants, wood, caves or other smooth structures to create shaded retreats. Cover reduces insecurity without eliminating open feeding areas.
  4. Establish filtration and oxygenation. The fish need clean, oxygenated water. Direct enough circulation across the aquarium to prevent stagnant areas, while leaving calm bottom zones where the group can forage.
  5. Verify the water before adding fish. Test temperature, pH and hardness against the profile ranges. Make changes gradually and avoid treating the published figures as permission to force unsuitable tap water into a target value.
  6. Introduce a group. Plan for four to six or more individuals rather than buying a single “clean-up” fish. Add only to a mature, stable aquarium with a cycled biological filter.

Community planning

The profile describes H. julii as peaceful but does not provide a species-specific tankmate chart. Select peaceful, compatible community fish that will not harass the catfish or consume every sinking meal before it reaches the bottom. Avoid overcrowding the limited floor space. Corydoras can injure a handler with their stiff pectoral-fin spines, so use a container rather than bare hands whenever possible.

Water quality and normal behaviour

Perform regular maintenance that keeps ammonia and nitrite at zero in an established aquarium and prevents nitrate and organic debris from accumulating; the species profile’s emphasis on clean conditions makes this more important than any single “ideal” number. Match replacement water closely for temperature and chemistry, especially when moving eggs or making a breeding change.

Occasional surface visits are compatible with the genus’s facultative air-breathing ability. A sudden increase in gasping, lethargy, clamped fins or refusal to feed is different: check temperature, oxygenation, filtration and nitrogen compounds immediately rather than assuming the behaviour is normal.

What Julii corys eat

FishBase lists worms, crustaceans, insects and plant matter among the foods of H. julii, consistent with an omnivorous foraging diet. The species profile says they accept sinking dried foods and small live or frozen foods, including chironomid larvae (bloodworms) and Tubifex (FishBase; Seriously Fish).

A practical food rotation

  • Use a quality sinking pellet or tablet as a dependable staple that reaches the substrate intact.
  • Rotate small live or frozen foods such as bloodworms and Tubifex to add variety and support conditioning.
  • Offer portions where the corys can find them directly. Watch the feeding area and remove uneaten food before it decomposes.
  • Feed the catfish deliberately even when other fish share the aquarium; do not assume they will obtain enough from scraps.

The Federation of British Aquatic Societies likewise advises feeding catfish separately rather than using them to consume leftovers and mentions frozen bloodworm in its general Corydoras guidance (FBAS Fish Care Sheet No. 17). That sheet is genus-level advice, not a controlled feeding trial for H. julii.

“Under no circumstances should they be expected to survive on ‘left-overs’ from other inhabitants of the aquarium or relied on to ‘clean’ the aquarium.” — Seriously Fish, Hoplisoma julii species profile

Calling them “cleaner fish” encourages underfeeding and poor maintenance. Their foraging helps them locate food on the bottom; it does not remove the need for siphoning, water changes or filtration.

How to condition and breed Hoplisoma julii

Spawning is a reported husbandry method, not a guaranteed response. Start with healthy, settled adults and condition them with varied foods. The Seriously Fish profile recommends two or more males per female if possible, which increases the likelihood that a female’s eggs are fertilised.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Triggering a spawning attempt

  1. Condition the group. Maintain excellent water quality and provide varied sinking foods plus small live or frozen items.
  2. Confirm the adults’ condition. Females that are visibly full of eggs are the profile’s cue for the next step.
  3. Make a large, cooler change. Replace 50–70% of the water with cooler water while increasing oxygenation and flow.
  4. Repeat if needed. The profile describes repeating the change daily until spawning. Treat this as a method that may work, not as a promise that every group will spawn.

Keep temperature and chemistry changes controlled. A cooler change should not become a sudden shock, and stronger flow must not leave the fish unable to rest.

Where eggs are laid and how to protect them

Eggs may be attached to aquarium glass, placed among fine-leaved plants or deposited on a sunken spawning mop. The profile favours a mop because it makes egg removal easier. Once spawning is complete, remove either the adults or the eggs; leaving both together increases the chance that eggs will be eaten.

If moving eggs, use a container filled with water from the spawning aquarium and provide similar oxygenation. Some breeders use methylene blue or alder cones to reduce fungal development. These are reported practices, not mandatory treatments; any chemical should be used only when its risks, dose and compatibility with the setup are understood.

Egg and fry timeline

Stage Profile guidance What to do
Egg placement Glass, fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mop Use a mop when you want easier collection; remove adults or eggs after spawning.
Incubation Usually three to four days Keep water clean, oxygenated and at stable conditions.
Yolk-sac period Fry initially use their yolk sacs Do not rush food into the tank before they can take it.
First foods Small live foods such as microworms and Artemia nauplii Begin once the yolk sacs are absorbed and keep portions tiny and fresh.

Maintain excellent water quality during the nursery stage. The profile notes that fry seem less susceptible to ailments on a thin layer of sand than in a bare arrangement, but presents that as an observation rather than a controlled comparison. Treat it as a husbandry option, not a proven requirement.

Common problems and the most useful response

“My Julii corys are not eating”

First check whether food reaches the bottom before faster tankmates consume it. Offer sinking foods after the aquarium is calmer, vary the food type, and inspect water quality. Do not solve the problem by adding more food indiscriminately, because decomposing leftovers worsen conditions.

“They keep swimming to the surface”

Some surface visits are normal for facultative air breathers. If the behaviour is frequent or accompanied by distress, test oxygenation, temperature, ammonia and nitrite, check that the filter is operating, and perform an appropriately matched water change.

“Their barbels look damaged”

Review the substrate and cleanliness. Replace sharp or dirty material with fine sand or smooth rounded gravel, improve waste removal, and avoid rough handling. Do not net these fish carelessly: their pectoral spines can pierce skin.

“The shop’s Julii corys look different”

Recheck head markings, but do not make a definitive identification from pattern alone. Ask for collection or breeder provenance; many fish sold under the name are H. trilineatum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Conservation and responsible buying

A conservation database entry lists H. julii as Least Concern, with an assessment dated 7 November 2018. FishBase displays CITES as “Not Evaluated” (FishBase). The 2018 date matters: it is not a current reassessment. Buy from sellers who can explain provenance and transport the fish responsibly, particularly when the exact species is important to you.

For most keepers, the best outcome is straightforward: provide a stable, clean, sand-based or smooth-gravel aquarium with cover; keep a proper group; feed sinking foods directly; and approach breeding as a controlled project involving conditioning, oxygenation, egg protection and suitable first foods.
