Jurassic Park’s Dome-Headed Dinosaur: What Pachycephalosaurus Really Got Wrong

The dome-headed dinosaur in The Lost World is based on real paleontology, but its juvenile ornamentation is off and its head-butting behavior remains debated.

Short answer: The Lost World: Jurassic Park correctly identifies a young Pachycephalosaurus and captures a long-standing idea that its dome was used in impacts. It overstates that idea as settled fact, however, and its juvenile has the wrong head ornamentation. Fossils show injuries compatible with members of the species butting one another, while skull anatomy has led other scientists to reject repeated, bighorn-sheep-style head-on ramming. The most accurate conclusion is that dome impacts are plausible, but the exact behavior remains unresolved.

What animal does Jurassic Park show?

Pachycephalosaurus was a bipedal dinosaur from Late Cretaceous North America. The Natural History Museum estimates an adult at about 3.0 metres long and 450 kilograms, living roughly 69–66 million years ago. Those are museum reference estimates, not measurements from a modern population study. The museum describes it as probably herbivorous, while noting that some teeth toward the front of the jaws look unusually carnivorous, so diet is not completely certain. Fact What the museum record says
Animal Pachycephalosaurus, meaning “thick-headed lizard”
Body plan Two-legged dinosaur with a large, thickened skull dome
Estimated size About 3.0 metres long and 450 kilograms
Time Approximately 69–66 million years ago, in the Late Cretaceous
Likely food Probably plants, although the appearance of some front teeth leaves uncertainty
Name history A fragment found around 1860 was initially called Tylosteus by other workers; Barnum Brown and Erich Maren Schlaikjer established Pachycephalosaurus in 1943

In The Lost World: Jurassic Park, the animal is shown as a youngster. A character explains its skull and neck as an impact-absorbing system, presenting the familiar picture of dome-headed dinosaurs charging each other. That scene reflects a real hypothesis in paleontology, not something invented by the screenwriters. The problem is the movie’s confidence: the fossils do not tell us that every adult repeatedly rammed another adult head-on.

The film’s juvenile has the wrong ornamentation

Canadian Museum of Nature paleobiologist Jordan Mallon reviewed the sequence and judged it broadly good, but identified a visible age-related error. Young pachycephalosaurs are expected to have longer spikes toward the rear of the skull. The youngster in the film instead has a low dome surrounded by short, rounded nodes. Its overall identity and juvenile scale work, but the decorative outline is not the one paleontologists would expect for a young animal. ( Canadian Museum of Nature review by Jordan Mallon)

This distinction matters because the skull changed substantially during growth. A juvenile is not simply a small adult with the same head shape. If the filmmakers wanted the characteristic spikes of a young animal, they would have needed to give the rear of the skull more prominent, elongated projections rather than smoothing them into a rounded crown.

Why the classic “ram like a bighorn sheep” story is disputed

For decades, the dome was treated as a built-in battering ram. The analogy is easy to understand: bighorn sheep use reinforced horns and skulls during contests, and Pachycephalosaurus has an unmistakably thick, rounded head. But anatomical comparisons raise several problems with a direct, repeated, forehead-to-forehead collision.

Rounded domes do not make secure ramming surfaces

Mark Goodwin, a paleontologist and principal scientist at the University of California Museum of Paleontology, argued that the skull did not resemble the specialized impact system of bighorn sheep. In a 1998 Berkeley release he warned, “Just because an animal looks like it might have engaged in some kind of behavior doesn’t mean it did.” In the same context he said, “It’s time to kill the myth,” referring to the head-to-head ram analogy. The American Museum of Natural History explains one mechanical concern: a rounded dome can cause an opponent’s head to glance off rather than meet it squarely. A glancing blow could twist the neck and create damaging rotational forces. The museum also notes that adult pachycephalosaur skulls lack the air-filled spaces found in bighorn sheep skulls, another difference from the living animal often used as the comparison. Neck and surrounding skull anatomy complicate the movie’s explanation

An impact hypothesis has to account for more than the dome itself. The neck must be aligned to transmit force without catastrophic bending, and the bones around the dome must tolerate the load. Researchers who doubt straight-on ramming point to the shape of the skull, the way the dome narrows or rounds in different individuals, and the absence of the same protective architecture seen in animals known to clash head-first. That does not make all contact impossible; it makes the precise, repeated collision shown on screen an inference rather than an established adaptation.

Other uses could have produced force without a bighorn-style crash. A dinosaur might have pushed or struck at an angle, made contact with the side of an opponent, or used the dome in a brief contest in which one animal tried to displace another. Those possibilities fit the anatomy question better than assuming every encounter involved two animals sprinting directly at each other.

What fossil injuries can—and cannot—tell us

The strongest counterpoint to the “never used the dome” interpretation comes from injury evidence. A 2013 peer-reviewed study mapped cranial lesions in dome-headed dinosaurs and found that their distribution was consistent with injuries from intraspecific butting. In other words, the locations and patterns of damage fit contact between members of the same species better than a purely decorative or display-only explanation. (PLOS ONE study record at PubMed, 2013)

That result supports an impact interpretation, but it does not recreate the encounter. A lesion cannot by itself show whether animals met forehead-to-forehead, struck obliquely, pushed, or made contact only occasionally. It also cannot establish how often the behavior occurred, whether one sex did it, or whether the same motion was used in courtship, territorial disputes, defense, or social ranking. The study therefore challenges an absolute claim that the domes were never used to hit one another; it does not prove the exact head-on collision sequence in Jurassic Park.

Question What the evidence supports What remains unknown
Did the skull experience impacts? Lesion locations are consistent with intraspecific butting. Whether every lesion came from a dome-to-dome blow or another type of contact.
Was it a bighorn-sheep-style ram? Anatomical comparisons raise serious objections. The exact angle, speed and frequency of any impact behavior.
Did adults and juveniles behave identically? The skull and ornamentation changed with age. Whether only mature animals used forceful contact, and for what purpose.
Was the dome purely a weapon? Injury evidence allows a role in physical contests. Whether display, recognition or communication were equally important functions.

The dome changed as the dinosaur grew

A 2004 Berkeley report described a growth series containing seven skulls. Young domes contain porous, fast-growing bone; with age, the bone becomes denser. That developmental pattern matters for behavior because a structure that is still porous and changing may not have had the same mechanical properties as an adult dome. It also means that a juvenile’s head cannot be used as a direct model for the mature animal. (UC Berkeley report on the growth series)

The same work considered the possibility that the dome and its surrounding ornamentation served as a visible covering or signal. Recognition, communication and display could all reward a distinctive head shape without requiring violent collisions. A large dome may have advertised age, maturity or condition to another dinosaur. If so, natural selection could favor its size and outline even when impacts were uncommon or angled rather than a routine head-on charge.

Stygimoloch and Dracorex may be young Pachycephalosaurus

The striking differences among dome-headed skulls once encouraged scientists to assign several names. The Natural History Museum reports that most scientists now regard Stygimoloch and Dracorex as younger forms of Pachycephalosaurus, rather than separate dinosaur species. This is a taxonomic interpretation based on growth-related changes, not an observation of living animals, so it should be presented as the prevailing view rather than an unquestionable fact. (Natural History Museum taxonomy summary)

If those names represent growth stages, the apparently different skulls are another warning against treating one spectacular adult dome as the complete story. Spikes, nodes and dome thickness could shift as the animal matured. The young animal in the film therefore needed a growth-appropriate head, and the same growth evidence makes behavior claims more complicated: a juvenile with a porous dome may have faced different mechanical limits and social roles from a mature individual.

What Jurassic Park gets right—and what it gets wrong

Film element Assessment
The animal is called Pachycephalosaurus. Correct identification.
It is described as a herbivore. Broadly consistent with museum summaries, although some front teeth leave diet uncertain.
The skull is presented as built for impacts. Reflects a genuine scientific hypothesis, but the adaptation is not settled.
The featured animal is young. Consistent with the scene’s portrayal.
The juvenile has a low, rounded set of ornaments. Inaccurate according to Mallon, who expects longer rear spikes in young animals.
The encounter implies repeated, direct head-on ramming. Too definite. Injury evidence permits but does not prove that exact behavior, while anatomy argues against a simple bighorn-sheep analogy.

The film is therefore neither wholly wrong nor scientifically settled. It uses a real anatomical puzzle as a dramatic certainty. The more defensible reconstruction is that pachycephalosaurs had domes capable of surviving or producing some forms of contact, but scientists still debate the geometry, purpose and social setting of that contact.

How paleontologists infer behavior from a fossil skull

No fossil preserves a dinosaur’s movement, intention or social rules. Researchers combine several imperfect lines of evidence instead:

  • Impact mechanics: the dome’s curvature, the neck’s alignment and the surrounding skull bones are tested against the forces a proposed behavior would create.
  • Pathology: healed or repeated lesions are mapped to see whether their positions match contact between animals of the same species.
  • Growth: porous juvenile bone, denser adult bone and changing ornamentation reveal how a structure developed and whether age altered its likely use.
  • Comparative anatomy: living animals provide useful mechanical analogies, but a resemblance to sheep, goats or other species is not proof that the dinosaur behaved the same way.
  • Alternative functions: display, recognition, communication, pushing and angled strikes must be considered alongside full-speed ramming.

Each line narrows the possibilities; none supplies a video recording. That is why a careful answer uses terms such as “consistent with,” “compatible with” and “argues against” instead of claiming that the fossil record has solved every detail.

A new skull is expanding access to the evidence

In 2025, the Smithsonian Institution announced the acquisition of an exceptionally complete Pachycephalosaurus skull. The National Museum of Natural History discussed plans for display and digitization so that more researchers and members of the public can examine the specimen. Its eventual display status can change, so check the museum’s current announcement before planning a visit. (Smithsonian Institution announcement, 2025)

A complete skull can improve comparisons of dome thickness, surface texture, sutures and ornamentation, especially when paired with other skulls of different sizes. It will not automatically settle the behavioral debate, but better-preserved material can test whether injuries, growth stages and bone structure line up with one proposed use more strongly than another.

So, did Pachycephalosaurus really ram other dinosaurs?

The evidence supports a cautious “possibly, in some form.” The 2013 lesion study makes intraspecific butting a serious interpretation rather than a discarded myth. Anatomical analyses, however, make the movie’s simple bighorn-sheep model questionable, and no fossil demonstrates a complete sequence of repeated, high-speed, forehead-first charges. The dome may have been used in angled blows, pushing contests or occasional butting, while also serving as a signal of identity, age or status.

That uncertainty is the central correction to Jurassic Park. The film’s dinosaur is real, its dome is genuinely unusual, and impact behavior is a legitimate scientific possibility. What the fossils do not justify is treating one dramatic reconstruction as settled fact—or overlooking the young animal’s distinctive, spike-heavy ornamentation.
