What happened in April 2023?
The shark was incidentally captured within Spain’s exclusive economic zone. The 2026 article record describes the specimen as a juvenile about 210 cm long and weighing between 80 and 90 kg. Why is the record significant?
The study, published in Acta Ichthyologica et Piscatoria 56 (2026), pages 27–31, reviews Spanish Mediterranean records from 1862 through 2023. These include direct observations as well as indirect evidence, such as signs of predation on loggerhead turtles. Its abstract says the combined findings support the “continued, though infrequent” presence of white sharks in the region. University of Cádiz repository abstract
That evidence does not support treating the shark as the first white shark in Spain for more than a century. The headline phrase “first time in over 100 years” is not established by the available abstract, which reviews records across a longer period and includes indirect records. The defensible point is that the 2023 capture is a new documented record within a history of infrequent regional evidence.

Does this mean Spain has a white shark nursery?
No. A juvenile’s presence in Spanish waters does not show that it was born there, nor does one capture establish a nursery or breeding population. The study leaves open whether the shark came from a central Mediterranean nursery or was born off Spain. Resolving that question would require evidence beyond this individual record.
What might have brought the shark to the area?
The study notes that the record coincided seasonally with Atlantic bluefin tuna migrations. Tuna may offer a clue about prey availability and shark movements, but the timing does not prove that tuna migration caused this particular shark to appear in Spanish waters.

How does the 2023 Mediterranean record relate to other Spanish sightings?
Two confirmed white shark occurrences were reported off Galicia and Asturias in 2021, on Spain’s north-western Atlantic coast. Those records are geographically distinct from the 2023 Mediterranean capture and should not be treated as sightings from the same coastal region. CSIC-hosted article record
A separate 2025 Mediterranean study compiled geographically validated sighting and capture records from 1900 onward. That work documents an effort to assemble historical records; it is not a current population census for Spanish waters. 2025 Mediterranean study

How many great white sharks live off Spain?
The cited sources do not provide a verified population estimate for Spanish waters. Historical records and an individual capture can establish that the species has occurred in the region, but they cannot show how many sharks are present or how often they visit.
