Lights, noise, and commercial repellents are not dependable fixes. If a skunk may be denning beneath a structure, do not seal the opening until you know it has left.
How to tell whether skunks are digging
Skunks commonly search soil for insect larvae, leaving small, cone-shaped holes or patches of turned earth. Similar damage can come from dogs and other animals, so holes alone do not prove skunks are responsible. Penn State Extension describes this digging pattern in its skunk guidance.

Look for repeated small excavations and consider when and where they appear. If you suspect grubs, check whether they are actually present before treating the lawn: digging is not enough evidence to justify insect control, which can also affect other organisms. Follow product labels and local guidance if grub management is warranted.
Remove food and shelter that attract skunks
Make the garden and nearby yard less rewarding before investing in deterrents. Secure garbage and compost, bring pet food indoors, clear uneaten food, and pick up fallen fruit. Reduce clutter and debris or wood piles that offer cover or may support prey animals. These steps address several possible food and shelter sources rather than relying on a scent or sound to frighten an animal away.

Skunks may be feeding on grubs or other garden pests, so their presence is not automatically a reason to remove them. Missouri Extension notes that skunks eat agricultural and garden pests and says that, where possible, leaving them alone is often the best approach. Its skunk management guidance describes their ecological value.
Use barriers for persistent access
Protect a garden boundary
Where skunks repeatedly enter a vulnerable garden area, buried fencing can provide a more durable boundary than a temporary deterrent. The layout and depth need to suit the site and the area being protected; no single installation is guaranteed for every garden. University of Missouri Extension discusses buried fencing for garden exclusion in its skunk guidance.

Block access beneath a structure
Galvanized hardware cloth can be used to close openings beneath sheds, decks, porches, or similar structures. Missouri Extension describes 1/4- or 1/2-inch mesh for sealing openings, and Montana’s skunk management guidance also supports galvanized hardware cloth for excluding skunks beneath structures. Choose materials and installation for the particular opening and conditions; a mesh size mentioned in guidance does not mean every roll or installation is suitable for every job.

Why lights, noise, and repellents may disappoint
Do not count on lights, noise, or a retail repellent to solve a skunk problem. Montana’s Department of Agriculture says skunks are not easily frightened by lights and noise and that no products are registered for repelling skunks. Michigan’s skunk guidance says retail lights and chemical deterrents may have only brief effects.
Long Beach Animal Care Services discusses mild harassment or repellents in some situations where safe displacement is possible, but that local advice does not establish a reliable result for gardens generally. Its skunk guidance also cautions that strong capsaicin preparations require care. Do not apply an irritating preparation casually or where pets, people, or other wildlife could be exposed.

What to do about a skunk denning beneath a building
Keep pets away and avoid handling, cornering, or attacking the animal. Skunks are generally reluctant to spray unless threatened, but close contact can provoke them. If an animal appears to be living under a building, first determine whether it is still present; do not close the entrance until it has left.
