What is the “half-man, half-fox” at Karachi Zoo?
Mumtaz Mahal is an entertainment attraction, not an animal species or a biological hybrid. Karachi Zoo’s facilities page describes it as an old character maintained to entertain visitors, especially children. Reporting on the pavilion describes a fox’s body paired with a human face, while a 2014 Reuters video report identifies Mumtaz Begum as a character performed by a man impersonating a woman.

The apparent creature combines a prop with a live performance. The zoo director, Mohammad Fahim Khan, was quoted in a 2014 news report saying: “This is an art. He is like an actor who plays this role and entertains the people.”

The attraction was documented at Karachi Zoo by 2007. In 2014, a zoo director’s account reported that circus people had offered to establish it at the zoo about 40 years earlier. That supports describing it as a roughly four-decade-old attraction, but the available accounts do not establish an exact opening date.

How many people visit Mumtaz Mahal?
A 2013 Express Tribune feature reported about 500 visitors on an average day and more than 1,000 on Sundays for the attraction. Those are historical figures from that article; they should not be read as current attendance.
Karachi Zoo’s official page estimates overall annual zoo footfall at 3 to 3.5 million, but does not state the estimate’s year or methodology. That zoo-wide figure is separate from the attraction-specific numbers reported in 2013.

Can you see Mumtaz Begum at the zoo now?
The zoo’s official pages describe Mumtaz Mahal as an attraction, but the information available does not establish whether a live performance is currently operating, its schedule, who the present performer is, or whether there is a separate pavilion ticket price. Check with Karachi Zoo before planning a visit specifically to see the performance.
The zoo’s official page lists opening hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and says Wednesdays are reserved for women and children. Visitor hours and access rules can change, so confirm them with the zoo before travelling.
