How often should you clean a kitten’s litter box?
Every day: scoop and check the setup
Remove feces and urine clumps at least daily. Cornell University’s Feline Health Center advises daily removal of feces and clumps when using clumping litter, with clean litter added as needed. Also check that the box is accessible and has enough clean litter.

Regularly: empty, wash, dry, and refill
Guidance differs on how often to wash the whole box. The ASPCA’s general cat-care guidance recommends washing and refilling at least weekly, while noting that clumping litter may allow less frequent washing. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association’s 2025 handout recommends washing every 1–4 weeks with soap and hot water. Use the box’s condition and how quickly it gets dirty to decide when it needs washing; daily scooping remains important whichever interval you follow.
How to wash the box without leaving strong odors
- Empty the litter and waste into the appropriate disposal container.
- Wash the box with water and mild, unscented soap or gentle detergent. Avoid ammonia, deodorants, and strong or scented cleaners, which can leave odors a kitten may dislike.
- Rinse and dry the box completely before adding fresh litter.
- Wash your hands after handling litter. Cornell’s zoonotic-disease guidance recommends limiting contact with cat feces and washing hands after handling cats or litter.
Choose a box and litter your kitten can use
Pick a box with sides low enough for your kitten to climb into without difficulty. A simple, uncovered box can be a good starting point. Keep it in an accessible location, away from food dishes, and avoid placing it somewhere the kitten may be blocked from reaching.

For one cat, Cornell and the ASPCA recommend one litter box per cat plus one extra—two boxes for a single-kitten household when feasible. Extra access can matter if one box is dirty or difficult to reach.
Begin with unscented, fine-textured litter. Cornell notes that many cats prefer this kind of litter, but preferences vary; the right choice is the one your kitten will use. Litter preferences can develop during kittenhood, according to the ASPCA’s litter-box guidance. If your kitten avoids a new litter, consider returning to a familiar option rather than assuming every kitten will like the same texture or type.

What to do when your kitten has an accident
An accident outside the box does not necessarily mean the box is dirty. Clean the soiled household surface with an enzymatic cleaner formulated to neutralize pet odors, as the ASPCA recommends. This is separate from routine box washing: do not use strong deodorants or scented cleaners inside the litter box.
When box avoidance may signal a health problem
If your kitten suddenly starts avoiding the box or soiling outside it, arrange a veterinary assessment instead of assuming the issue is behavioral. Medical problems can contribute to house-soiling; the Feline Veterinary Medical Association advises veterinary examination and urinalysis when a cat begins house-soiling.

Seek prompt veterinary attention if your kitten has difficulty or pain urinating, repeatedly tries to urinate, or has blood in the urine. These signs need professional assessment; do not try to diagnose the cause from litter-box behavior alone.
