Keeping a budgie (also called a budgerigar or parakeet) means providing daily opportunities for movement, social contact, exploration and safe chewing—not simply filling a seed cup and shutting a cage door. These intelligent, active parrots need a roomy setup, a carefully managed diet, enrichment, supervised flight and preventive care from a veterinarian who treats birds. This guide explains the practical decisions, the areas where expert recommendations differ, and a routine that supports welfare throughout a budgie’s life.
What living with a budgie involves
The budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) is a small parrot known for social behaviour, curiosity and high activity. VCA describes budgies as birds that enjoy flying, playing and chewing, and recommends non-toxic, pet-safe toys (VCA Animal Hospitals: Budgies – General). A budgie may learn to step onto a finger or imitate sounds, but training takes time and individual birds differ; neither tameness nor talking is guaranteed.

Daily care is a welfare programme rather than a single task. The RSPCA’s guidance treats company, enrichment, the environment, opportunities to fly and training as connected parts of responsible bird keeping (RSPCA UK: How to Care for your Pet Bird). Before acquiring a bird, make sure an adult can provide fresh food and water, cleaning, observation and interaction every day, including weekends and holidays.
Plan the home and budget before bringing a bird home
Choose a quiet area where the cage is protected from drafts, direct heat and constant disturbance, while still allowing the bird to see and hear normal household activity. Identify an avian or exotic-pet clinic in advance, arrange a suitable carrier for visits, and decide who will care for the bird when you travel. A new budgie should have an initial examination by a veterinarian experienced with birds; VCA also recommends semi-annual health checkups (VCA Animal Hospitals: Budgies – General).

No reliable, universally applicable pet-lifespan range is established by the veterinary and welfare guidance used here. Plan for a long-term commitment and let your veterinarian discuss likely expectations for your individual bird, based on health, history and environment.
How big should a budgie cage be?
The cage must let the bird move comfortably, stretch fully and flap its wings without striking the sides. VCA’s small-bird housing guidance states that bigger is better and generally favours rectangular, powder-coated or stainless-steel cages (VCA Animal Hospitals: Housing Small Birds). The sources do not establish a single minimum budgie measurement or a definitive bar-spacing rule, so do not treat an online number as a universal veterinary or legal standard.
Use the cage as a safe base
The Royal Veterinary College’s budgerigar fact sheet, reviewed in December 2024, says the cage ideally should be used for housing at night or when the bird is unsupervised (Royal Veterinary College: Budgerigar Care). This is a welfare-oriented ideal, not permission to leave a bird loose without assessing household safety. Ask your avian veterinarian how much out-of-cage time is appropriate and how to adapt the routine if your home cannot be made reliably secure.

Check construction and layout
- Prefer a stable rectangular cage made from bird-safe, non-toxic materials; inspect painted or coated surfaces regularly for damage.
- Provide enough usable horizontal space for short flights and movement rather than filling the interior with bulky accessories.
- Arrange perches, food and water so droppings cannot continually contaminate dishes, and keep a clear route between perches.
- Use a carrier for transport to veterinary appointments; detailed carrier dimensions were not established in the cited guidance, so obtain a recommendation for your bird’s size and travel conditions.
What should I feed my budgie?
An all-seed diet should not be described as nutritionally complete. VCA’s veterinary-authored feeding page says, “Because seeds lack vitamins, minerals, and protein, they should only be a very small part of a budgie’s diet and should never be the entire diet.” It recommends a formulated small-bird pellet as the main component, with pellets representing approximately 60–80% of the diet and fruit and vegetables accounting for up to 20–25% (VCA Animal Hospitals: Feeding Budgies).
RSPCA UK places a different emphasis for small parrots, including budgerigars: it advises free access to pellets and fresh vegetables and fruit, with seeds making up no more than one tenth of the diet (RSPCA UK: What to Feed Your Pet Bird | Parrot Diet). These are recommendations from different organisations, not a single agreed formula. The safest way to choose proportions is to have an avian veterinarian assess the bird, current food, body condition and local pellet options.
| Source | Main emphasis | How to use the advice |
|---|---|---|
| VCA Animal Hospitals | Formulated pellets as the main food; approximately 60–80% pellets; produce up to 20–25%; seed is not the whole diet. | Use as a veterinary starting point, then adjust with your bird’s veterinarian. |
| RSPCA UK | Free access to pellets and fresh produce; seeds no more than 10% for small parrots. | Use the upper limit as a reminder that seed should remain a small component. |
Change food safely
- Ask an avian veterinarian which formulated pellet and transition schedule fit your bird.
- Offer the new food alongside the familiar diet so you can verify that the bird is actually eating.
- Monitor droppings, appetite, weight if your veterinarian recommends regular weighing, and behaviour during the transition.
- Never abruptly remove a familiar food before a suitable replacement is being consumed; birds can become ill if they stop eating.
Fresh food, water and hygiene
Provide clean, fresh water at all times and wash food and water dishes daily, as VCA advises (VCA Animal Hospitals: Feeding Budgies). Offer produce in small portions and remove it after no more than a couple of hours, sooner in warm conditions, because it can spoil. VCA identifies avocado as potentially toxic and says it should never be offered. Ask your veterinarian for a complete list of foods and plants to avoid in your region.

Do budgies need another bird for company?
Budgies are social, and a human household must provide meaningful interaction rather than leaving a solitary bird ignored for long periods. The RSPCA includes company and training in its core care advice, while VCA describes budgies as social and inquisitive (RSPCA UK: How to Care for your Pet Bird; VCA Animal Hospitals: Budgies – General).
A second bird may provide social contact, but it is not an automatic substitute for responsible care. Birds have individual temperaments, and introducing another bird requires a plan for housing, health checks and gradual interaction. Discuss compatibility, quarantine and introduction procedures with an avian veterinarian before bringing home a companion. If you keep one budgie, schedule daily interaction, training and supervised activity; if you keep more than one, continue monitoring each bird’s eating, behaviour and access to resources.
What toys and activities do budgies need?
Enrichment should let a budgie perform natural behaviours: chewing, shredding, climbing, searching for food, flying and learning. VCA recommends non-toxic, pet-safe toys, and RSPCA enrichment guidance suggests simple foraging challenges such as food wrapped in paper or placed in cardboard tubes for a bird to investigate and chew (VCA Animal Hospitals: Budgies – General; RSPCA UK: Enrichment for Pet Birds).

Build a varied rotation
- Offer several safe items with different textures, including shreddable paper or cardboard and appropriately sized chewing toys.
- Hide a small portion of the day’s approved food in a paper parcel or cardboard tube so the bird must investigate and forage.
- Rotate toys periodically to maintain interest, but change only one element at a time if your bird is cautious.
- Inspect every item for frayed fibres, loose parts, sharp edges, damaged coatings or contamination; remove and replace anything worn.
A mirror or a single favourite toy cannot replace social contact, exercise and a stimulating environment. Observe what your bird chooses to do and adjust the setup around safe activities it uses willingly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Flight, handling and training
Flying is part of a budgie’s normal activity, and welfare guidance includes opportunities to fly (RSPCA UK: How to Care for your Pet Bird). Provide out-of-cage time only when a responsible person can supervise and the room has been made bird-safe. Start with short sessions, allow the bird to return to the cage voluntarily, and avoid chasing or grabbing it. Your veterinarian can help you adapt flight opportunities for a bird with illness, injury or poor conditioning.
Training works best as brief, calm sessions using a consistent cue and a reward your veterinarian approves. Teach a step-up response gradually, stop before the bird becomes distressed, and accept that progress varies. Never punish biting, screaming or reluctance; punishment can increase fear and damage trust.

Veterinary care and daily health checks
Book the initial examination with a veterinarian who is experienced with birds, then follow the recommended schedule. VCA specifically recommends semi-annual checkups for budgies (VCA Animal Hospitals: Budgies – General). The exact tests and frequency should be tailored to age, medical history, diet, housing and local disease risks.
Watch for changes
Observe appetite, drinking, droppings, activity, breathing, posture, feather condition and interaction each day. Birds often hide illness, so a noticeable change warrants a prompt call to the clinic rather than waiting for the next routine appointment. Do not administer human medicines or leftover pet drugs unless a veterinarian has prescribed them for that bird.
Quick Recap
A practical daily and weekly routine
Every day
- Replace water and clean food and water dishes.
- Provide the veterinarian-approved diet and remove spoiled fresh produce within the recommended time.
- Check that the bird is eating, active and using perches normally.
- Offer supervised interaction, training, flight or play, plus at least one foraging or chewing opportunity.
Several times a week
- Rotate or rearrange selected enrichment items while keeping the cage layout understandable.
- Inspect toys, perches, coatings and fasteners for wear or contamination.
- Clean cage surfaces and replace soiled paper according to your household’s hygiene needs.
At each veterinary visit
- Bring notes about diet, appetite, droppings, behaviour and any changes you have observed.
- Ask whether the current pellet, seed and produce balance remains appropriate.
- Review flight, social arrangements, enrichment and any household exposure concerns.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Relying on seeds as the complete diet.
- Buying a cage based only on a quoted minimum measurement when the bird cannot stretch and flap comfortably.
- Leaving a budgie alone without daily social contact or enrichment.
- Keeping fresh produce in the cage long enough to spoil.
- Using toys made from unknown or damaged materials.
- Waiting for obvious severe illness instead of arranging preventive, bird-experienced veterinary care.
