The dog, first presented as Lucas, is now named Javi—short for Javier—but had not yet moved into the couple’s home while medical checks and tests were pending.
What Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos announced
Consuelos made the confirmation plainly on the October 13 episode: “We adopted Javi yesterday.” Ripa said the puppy was “not living in the house yet” because the family was waiting for “a couple of medicals, a couple of tests.” She and Consuelos joked that they were “like expectant parents.”

That distinction matters. The adoption was confirmed, but the couple had not said that Javi’s veterinary checks were complete or that he had begun living permanently with them. Coverage of the announcement identifies October 12 as the adoption date and October 13 as the confirmation.
Who Javi is
The program’s website described the dog as a four-month-old Shih Tzu recently rescued from a puppy mill. That description comes from the show’s website; the available coverage does not identify a placement organization or provide independent medical details about Javi.

Javi was shown on the October 12 broadcast under the name Lucas. After the adoption, Ripa and Consuelos said they had renamed him Javi, a short form of Javier. No further explanation for the name change was given.
Why Ripa connected Javi with Chewie
Ripa said she had been thinking about her late dog Chewie when viewers reacted to the puppy. A social-media commenter wrote, “Oh, Chewie sent you a good one,” and Ripa said she had been thinking the same thing. She had hoped for a small black dog resembling Lena, but said Javi reminded her of Chewie.

Chewie died in February 2025 at age 17. Ripa described him as a constant companion who had grown up with the couple’s children. The assigned headline’s “20 months” is an approximate framing of the interval between Chewie’s death and the October 2026 adoption; the reported dates do not establish the exact day needed to calculate a precise number of elapsed months.

How Lena met the new puppy
Ripa and Consuelos brought Lena to meet Javi on October 12. Consuelos called the introduction a “chemistry test” or “meet-cute” and noted that Lena did not bark at him. Ripa said Lena was frightened of Javi, as she is of other dogs, and the couple expected the two dogs to become more comfortable with time.

Lena’s place in the family’s dog story
The couple previously adopted Lena after she appeared in a pet segment on their show. Ripa said she had worried that Chewie might feel replaced and deliberately gave Chewie attention first. That earlier experience helps explain why the hosts described the introduction of Javi and Lena in terms of careful observation rather than an immediate guarantee that everything would be effortless.

- The couple have not said exactly when Javi will begin living in their home.
- There is no confirmed account yet of how Lena behaves with Javi beyond the first meeting.
