Pretzel, a puppy found stuck in a scrapyard pond in Cleveland, Texas, was taken to an emergency veterinary hospital in less than two hours, according to a September 21, 2026, report by Pet Rescue Report. She had an open fracture in a rear leg and was critically ill. A September 24 follow-up said the veterinary team had chosen amputation after considering repair, but did not confirm that the operation had taken place or report her eventual recovery.

How rescuers found Pretzel

Pretzel was found stuck in a pond at a scrapyard in Cleveland, Texas, on a Saturday evening. The initial account says rescuers transported her to emergency veterinary care in less than two hours. The report does not establish how she ended up in the pond or how long she had been there.

What the veterinary team found

Pet Rescue Report’s September 21 account described an open fracture in one of Pretzel’s rear legs. She was extremely pale and had fleas and ticks, with maggots around her mouth. The report also noted low protein and dark stools. Her packed cell volume (PCV), a measure of the proportion of blood made up of red blood cells, was reported at 10 percent.

The medical team gave her a blood transfusion and support for her blood pressure. Because she was in poor body condition, staff also managed her refeeding carefully. These figures and clinical details are reports about Pretzel’s individual case, not independently audited measurements or general benchmarks for other puppies.

Why the plan changed to amputation

By the September 24 follow-up, Pretzel was reported to be stable after initial treatment. The veterinary team considered stabilizing and repairing the leg, potentially with a plate, as well as amputation. After consulting a second hospital and surgeon, the team chose amputation.

The follow-up gave two main reasons: the badly fractured leg continued to pose an infection risk, and attempting repair could mean a prolonged hospital stay, repeated procedures, and the possibility that the leg might still need to be removed as Pretzel grew. This was a decision made for her particular injuries and circumstances; it is not a general rule for treating fractures in puppies.

The follow-up said surgery was scheduled for Friday. That reports the plan as of September 24, not proof that the operation was completed. The two Pet Rescue Report articles, published three days apart, do not establish Pretzel’s eventual surgical outcome, later recovery, or adoption status.
