The couple shared the news during the opening of Live with Kelly and Mark on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, one day after saying goodbye to their longtime family dog.
Consuelos told viewers that the family had gone through a “rough day” and had chosen in-home humane euthanasia for Chewie at their New York City apartment. Ripa became tearful as he explained what had happened and remembered the dog’s place in their family.
What happened to Chewie?
According to the couple’s on-air account, Chewie had been eating less for several weeks before stopping altogether. She was also severely dehydrated and experiencing neurological problems. With Chewie’s condition worsening, Ripa and Consuelos made the decision to have a veterinarian provide humane euthanasia at home on February 4.
Home euthanasia can allow a pet to remain in a familiar, quiet environment surrounded by family. The choice is personal and should be discussed with a veterinarian, who can explain a pet’s condition, likely comfort level and available end-of-life options.

Chewie joined the family in 2007
Ripa recalled that she brought Chewie home after meeting her during an adoption segment on Live in 2007. The rescue dog then remained part of the family as Ripa and Consuelos raised their three children.
During the broadcast, Consuelos described Chewie as a steady companion through the years. Ripa became emotional while discussing how the dog had been there as the children grew up and eventually left for college. Although reports often summarize the moment as both hosts tearing up, the clearest description is that Ripa broke down in tears while Consuelos made the announcement and comforted her.

Ripa and Consuelos’ other dog, Lena
The couple also has Lena, a Maltese–Shih Tzu mix. Chewie was a Shih Tzu and a rescue dog, while Lena joined the family separately and has appeared in the couple’s public updates about their pets.

Helping a dog through the end of life
Chewie’s symptoms—loss of appetite, dehydration and neurological changes—can be signs that an older dog needs prompt veterinary attention.
