The Kemp’s ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys kempii) is the world’s smallest sea turtle, and one of the most endangered. Its population has rebounded from a severe historic collapse, but that progress has not made the species secure: NOAA identifies fishing-gear bycatch as its biggest ongoing threat, and nesting counts have fluctuated since 2010.
What is a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle?
Kemp’s ridley is a marine turtle named for its species, Lepidochelys kempii. It is the smallest sea turtle: adults are about two feet long and typically weigh 70–100 pounds. They have a dark grey-green upper shell, a pale underside, and a triangular head. NOAA lists its lifespan as unknown, with an estimate of 30 years or more. The species is endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act throughout its range. NOAA Fisheries’ species profile provides its biological and conservation overview; the National Park Service’s Cape Hatteras account describes its appearance.

Where do Kemp’s ridley turtles live?
The species is centered in the Gulf of America, formerly called the Gulf of Mexico, and uses coastal and marine habitat across the Gulf and Atlantic. Juveniles may travel as far north as Nova Scotia. Foraging habitat includes shallow areas with sandy or muddy bottoms, but nesting is concentrated on western Gulf beaches. NOAA estimates that 95 percent of worldwide nesting occurs in Tamaulipas, Mexico. That distinction matters: the turtle’s range at sea is much broader than its main nesting grounds. The National Park Service describes its preferred shallow-bottom habitat.
What do Kemp’s ridley turtles eat?
Kemp’s ridleys feed mainly on crabs and other invertebrates, including clams, mussels, shrimp, and other mollusks. Fish and sea jellies are also documented prey. These are examples rather than a complete menu. The species’ preference for hard-shelled prey is reflected in its diet descriptions from Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Padre Island National Seashore.

How do Kemp’s ridley turtles nest?
Kemp’s ridleys are unusual among sea turtles because females come ashore to nest during daylight. They are one of two sea turtle species known to nest in synchronized mass events called arribadas, when many females arrive around the same time.
- Season: NOAA gives April through July as the nesting season.
- Clutches: A female typically lays two to three clutches per season, with about 100 eggs in each clutch.
- Incubation: Eggs generally incubate for 50–60 days.
- Frequency: Females usually nest every one to three years.
These nesting details are from NOAA Fisheries. A nest count is not a count of individual turtles: one female can lay more than one clutch in a season, and not every turtle is nesting in a given year.

How has the Kemp’s ridley population changed?
The population fell from historical levels of tens of thousands of nesting females to fewer than 250 nesting females represented by 702 nests in 1985, according to NOAA. The steep decline followed prolonged pressures that included collecting eggs and killing nesting turtles. Protection efforts were followed by a slow rebound through the 1990s; annual nest counts rose by about 15 percent per year through 2009. The rapid increase ended in 2010, and counts have fluctuated since. NOAA’s figures describe nesting indicators, not a census of every turtle at sea. See NOAA’s population status page.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service reported 449 Kemp’s ridley nests in Texas in 2025, the most recorded in the state since recordkeeping began in 1978. It is encouraging evidence for Texas, not a worldwide total or proof of species-wide recovery. The main nesting concentration remains in Mexico, and a single state’s count cannot establish the global trend. The figure and its geographic scope come from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s April 2026 report.

Why are Kemp’s ridley sea turtles endangered?
NOAA identifies bycatch in commercial and recreational fishing gear as the biggest ongoing threat. Turtles can be caught in trawls, gillnets, longlines, hook-and-line gear, pots or traps, and dredges; entanglement or capture can injure or drown them. NOAA also identifies other pressures:
- Nesting habitat loss and degradation: Coastal development, shoreline armoring, artificial lighting, beach driving, erosion, and rising seas can reduce or disrupt nesting habitat.
- Pollution and marine debris: Debris can be swallowed or cause entanglement.
- Vessel strikes: Boats can injure or kill turtles.
- Environmental conditions: Sand temperature can affect egg survival and hatchling sex ratios; storms and sea-level rise can flood or wash away nests.
- Predation: Eggs and hatchlings are vulnerable to predators.
Egg collection and killing nesting females were important historical pressures; nest protection has reduced direct harvest. These threats and their effects are described by NOAA Fisheries. Environmental impacts can vary by location and year; a particular storm or beach change alone does not establish a species-wide trend.

How are Kemp’s ridley turtles being protected?
Recovery work combines protection at nesting beaches with measures to reduce deaths at sea. In Mexico and the United States, conservation programs protect nesting females, eggs, and hatchlings, while monitoring helps track nesting activity. A second nesting colony was established at Padre Island National Seashore. Commercial shrimp trawlers are required to use turtle excluder devices, which allow turtles to escape from nets. Agencies and partners also conduct beach patrols and coordinate responses to nests. NOAA Fisheries, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and Padre Island National Seashore describe these efforts.
Protection remains necessary because bycatch is still the leading threat NOAA identifies and nesting counts have not continued their earlier rapid rise. The Texas record is a positive local signal, but it does not change the need to protect turtles and nesting habitat across the species’ range.
