Best Friends Animal Society and Fresh Step teamed up for a Valentine’s cat-adoption campaign that, according to Best Friends, helped place 137 cats and kittens over the holiday weekend and more than 700 felines over the month. The organization’s March 18, 2026, story follows adopters who welcomed Storm and Gina into their homes.
What the Valentine’s adoption campaign offered
Best Friends Animal Society’s story describes Fresh Step as the organization’s official litter partner. Fresh Step covered feline adoption fees at all Best Friends locations from February 13 to 16, 2026. During the month, people adopting cats or kittens also received a coupon for free Fresh Step litter, redeemable at Walmart. These were limited-time offers reported for that past campaign, not current promotions. Best Friends Animal Society’s March 18, 2026, story is the source for the offer terms.

Storm joined a home with another cat
Cali and David learned about Storm after a friend saw her on Best Friends’ social media and recommended her. They had been looking for a companion for their resident cat, Nova. Best Friends’ story says the cats became companions after a slow introduction. Cali described Storm as “the sweetest baby” who comes over purring and wanting to cuddle, and said, “Now that she’s part of our home, we love her even more.”

Gina was adopted in New York City
A couple in New York City adopted Gina, a two-year-old cat with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). The story recounts one partner’s initial hesitation and the other’s experience with cats. Gina’s circumstances are part of her individual adoption story; the anecdote is not medical guidance about FIV.

Best Friends connects the campaign to its goal of helping U.S. shelters reach no-kill. The organization defines the term this way: “No-kill means saving every dog and cat in a shelter who can be saved, accounting for community safety and good quality of life for pets.” The campaign is one example of adoption efforts described in the organization’s story, not evidence that every shelter has reached that goal.
