The kennel cough vaccine usually means a Bordetella vaccine, which may also include canine parainfluenza virus or canine adenovirus type 2. It is generally considered for dogs that regularly mix with other dogs, but it cannot prevent every illness called kennel cough. The route, doses, and timing depend on the product, so ask your veterinarian and check the facility’s current requirements before exposure.

What is kennel cough?

“Kennel cough” is a common name for a group of contagious respiratory illnesses, also called canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC) or infectious tracheobronchitis. Several pathogens can contribute, including Bordetella bronchiseptica, canine parainfluenza virus, canine adenovirus type 2, canine influenza viruses, and other agents.

Dogs with different infections can show similar signs, such as a forceful cough, gagging, sneezing, nasal discharge, or reduced energy. A Bordetella-containing vaccine cannot prevent every case. Its purpose is to reduce signs from the pathogens covered by that product; it does not guarantee that a vaccinated dog will never get sick.

Which dogs may benefit?

Vaccination is exposure-based. It may be appropriate for dogs with regular close contact with other dogs, including those that attend or stay at:

AAHA guidance treats Bordetella vaccination as dependent on a dog’s risk and lifestyle, rather than an automatic choice for every household dog. A facility may require proof of vaccination or specify a product, route, deadline, or booster interval. Those are facility policies, not universal medical rules. Ask the facility for its current requirements and have your veterinarian confirm the product and timing.

What does the vaccine protect against?

Most kennel cough vaccines contain Bordetella bronchiseptica. Depending on the product, they may also include canine parainfluenza virus (CPIV) and/or canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2). Canine influenza vaccination is a separate decision; do not assume a Bordetella vaccine covers influenza.

Ask which pathogens the recommended product covers. Cornell’s owner guidance explains that vaccination may reduce clinical signs or shedding without eliminating the risk of illness.

Vaccine types and schedules

Bordetella vaccines are available as intranasal, oral, or injectable products. They are not interchangeable. AAHA’s guideline table lists one initial dose for the intranasal and oral schedules shown, and two injectable doses given 2–4 weeks apart; it lists annual subsequent boosters. The current product label and your veterinarian’s advice control the schedule for a specific dog and product.

Type How it is given Schedule and considerations
Intranasal Placed into the nose Some products combine Bordetella with CPIV and/or CAV-2. AAHA generally favors the mucosal route for respiratory pathogens, but route choice depends on the dog and product.
Oral Placed in the mouth or buccal pouch Products may contain Bordetella alone or a combination. AAHA lists one initial dose for the oral schedule shown; check the exact label.
Injectable Injected under the skin, as directed by the label AAHA lists two initial doses 2–4 weeks apart for injectable Bordetella. Check the exact product label for its ingredients and booster instructions.

Evidence comparing routes is not identical, and studies comparing oral and intranasal results have conflicted. No route is universally best for every dog. A live vaccine designed for mucosal use must not be injected; AAHA warns that accidental injection can cause a serious inflammatory reaction. The veterinary team should administer the product exactly as labeled.

How soon before exposure?

Onset of protection is product-specific and may differ by pathogen in a combination vaccine. For example, the UK Veterinary Medicines Directorate’s November 2024 leaflet for Nobivac KC nasal drops states onset of immunity at 72 hours for Bordetella bronchiseptica and three weeks for CPIV. Those timings apply to that product and label, not to every vaccine or country.

Before boarding or daycare, ask your veterinarian how soon the chosen product is expected to work and whether your dog needs an initial dose, an injectable series, or a booster. Also confirm the facility’s deadline separately; its policy may not match the earliest onset stated on a product label.

Can a vaccinated dog still get kennel cough?

Yes. A vaccinated dog may still develop respiratory signs because the vaccine does not cover every possible cause, protection may not have developed yet, or the dog may have been exposed before vaccination. Vaccination is preventive, not a treatment for an infection already underway, and no vaccine protects every animal equally.

A cough can also have causes unrelated to kennel cough, including pneumonia, heart or tracheal disease, or inhaled foreign material. Contact your veterinarian if your dog develops a persistent, worsening, or severe cough.

Side effects and safety

Possible reactions depend on the product and route. The UK-authorized product label cited by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate lists nasal discharge, ocular discharge, sneezing, and cough among its reactions, as well as very rare serious hypersensitivity or immune-mediated events. These label details are specific to that product and should not be treated as rates for every Bordetella vaccine.

Tell your veterinarian before vaccination if your dog has had a previous vaccine reaction, is significantly ill or immunosuppressed, or has another unusual health history. The product label and veterinarian should guide whether and when vaccination is appropriate. Do not use vaccination to treat an established or suspected respiratory infection.

Puppies and high-density settings

Puppies need an individualized plan based on age, health, product labeling, and exposure risk. A puppy entering daycare, boarding, training, or a shelter may face different risks from one living in a low-contact household. Bordetella vaccination does not replace core puppy vaccinations; ask your veterinarian about vaccines recommended for your location and your puppy’s circumstances.

Shelters, kennels, and rescue organizations face added challenges because many animals may be exposed quickly and several pathogens can circulate at once. Vaccination is one part of outbreak control, alongside measures such as separating sick dogs, cleaning, ventilation, observation, and limiting contact during outbreaks.

Bordetella vaccine versus canine influenza vaccine

Vaccine What it targets What to check
Bordetella-containing Bordetella bronchiseptica and, depending on the product, CPIV and/or CAV-2 Product ingredients, route, schedule, and facility requirements
Canine influenza Specific canine influenza viruses Whether it is recommended for the dog’s social setting or local disease situation

Ask both the facility and your veterinarian which vaccines are required or recommended. Meeting a facility’s Bordetella requirement does not necessarily mean a dog has received canine influenza vaccination, or vice versa.

What to do if your vaccinated dog starts coughing

  1. Separate your dog from other dogs. Avoid daycare, boarding, dog parks, grooming, classes, and other close-contact settings while you seek advice.
  2. Call your veterinarian. Describe the cough, your dog’s exposure, vaccination product and date, and any other signs.
  3. Seek prompt evaluation for concerning signs. These include worsening or persistent cough, fever, heavy or colored nasal discharge, marked lethargy, poor appetite, or labored or rapid breathing.

Diagnosis may be based on exposure history and signs while other causes are considered. Severe, prolonged, unusual, or outbreak-associated cases may warrant diagnostic testing. Do not give human cough medicine or leftover antibiotics unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.

FAQ

Is the kennel cough vaccine the same as the Bordetella vaccine?

Usually, “kennel cough vaccine” refers to a vaccine containing Bordetella bronchiseptica. Some products also cover CPIV and/or CAV-2, but the term kennel cough describes a broader group of respiratory illnesses.

Does the Bordetella vaccine prevent every case of kennel cough?

No. It targets only the organisms included in the product and cannot prevent every cause of CIRDC. Vaccinated dogs may still become ill, though vaccination may reduce signs from covered pathogens.

How many doses does a dog need?

It depends on the route and product. AAHA’s schedule lists one initial intranasal or oral dose for the schedules shown, or two injectable doses 2–4 weeks apart, followed by annual boosters. Check the exact label and ask your veterinarian about your dog’s history.

How long before boarding should my dog be vaccinated?

There is no universal interval. Onset varies by product and sometimes by pathogen in a combination vaccine. Ask the veterinarian and the facility about the chosen product’s timing and the facility’s deadline.

Can my dog be vaccinated while coughing?

Vaccination does not treat an active respiratory infection. Tell your veterinarian about the cough and your dog’s health so they can assess whether to postpone vaccination and whether evaluation or isolation is needed.

The bottom line

The kennel cough vaccine is targeted risk reduction for dogs with meaningful exposure to other dogs. Ask your veterinarian to choose a product and schedule based on your dog’s health, age, and lifestyle, and confirm any facility requirements. It cannot prevent every respiratory illness, so separate a coughing dog from other dogs and seek veterinary advice for persistent or severe signs.
