If your dog may have been bitten by a snake, call an emergency veterinarian and begin transport immediately. Keep your dog quiet and limit movement; carry the dog if possible, and call the clinic while travelling so staff can advise and prepare.

Do not wait for symptoms or try home remedies. Bite marks can be hard to see, and a dog that appears well may still need urgent veterinary assessment.

What should I do if my dog gets bitten by a snake?

  1. Move to a safe distance. Do not approach, handle, kill, or capture the snake. Describe it to the veterinarian only if you observed it safely.
  2. Call an emergency veterinary hospital. Tell staff a snakebite is suspected and call while travelling so they can advise and prepare. Ask where to go if they cannot treat your dog.
  3. Keep your dog quiet and limit activity. Carry the dog when possible rather than letting the dog walk. VCA also advises keeping the dog warm during transport.
  4. Handle your dog carefully. Pain or fear can cause a dog to bite. Follow the veterinary team’s advice about safe handling.
  5. Leave for care immediately. Do not delay transport to inspect the wound or attempt first aid.

Merck Veterinary Manual says, “A venomous snakebite is a true emergency.”

What might I see after a snakebite?

Signs vary with the snake, bite location, the dog’s size, and whether venom was injected. Pit-viper bites may cause rapidly spreading swelling and severe local tissue injury; bloody fluid may ooze from fang wounds, and skin may become discolored. Fang marks can be difficult to see or hidden by swelling. Elapid bites may cause little local pain or swelling despite serious effects elsewhere in the body.

What should I not do?

Do not spend time on home treatment beyond keeping your dog quiet and limiting activity. The following measures are ineffective or may cause harm:

Avoid Do instead
Ice, cold packs, cold sprays, or hot packs Keep your dog quiet and travel to veterinary care
Cutting the wound or trying to suck out venom Leave the wound alone and call the veterinarian
Tourniquets or electric shock Limit movement and follow veterinary instructions
Waiting for swelling or other symptoms Call and leave for care as soon as a bite is suspected
Handling or capturing the snake Move away; share any safely observed description with the veterinarian

What treatment might a veterinarian provide?

The veterinarian will assess your dog and determine the likely type and severity of the bite. Depending on the case, care may include intravenous fluids and treatment for shock, monitoring for bleeding or other complications, pain control, wound care, and antivenom when appropriate and available.

Antivenom is the only direct, specific way to neutralize snake venom. Merck says it is most effective when given within the first six hours, though improvement may occur after later administration. Availability varies, so call the nearest emergency veterinary hospital for directions. Do not try to obtain or administer antivenom yourself.

Veterinary monitoring recommendations depend on the snake group and the dog’s clinical findings. Follow the attending veterinarian’s instructions about observation and follow-up.

Can a dog survive a snakebite?

Outcome depends on the snake, whether venom was injected, bite location, and the dog’s condition and care. Prompt veterinary assessment gives the veterinarian the opportunity to evaluate and treat complications. Do not use an apparently mild bite or a lack of early symptoms to predict the outcome.

Can a vaccine prevent a rattlesnake bite?

Merck notes that a vaccine is available for dogs that may reduce the effects of a rattlesnake bite. It does not prevent all bites or remove the need for urgent veterinary assessment after a suspected bite. Ask your veterinarian whether vaccination is suitable for local snake risks.

Should I wait to see whether my dog develops symptoms?

No. Signs may vary or be delayed, and an owner cannot safely determine at home whether venom was injected. Call and begin transport as soon as a bite is suspected.

Can I suck venom out or put ice on the bite?

No. Do not cut or suck the wound, apply ice or heat, use a tourniquet, or apply electric shock. These measures are ineffective or potentially harmful and can delay care.

Should I bring the snake to the veterinarian?

No. Do not approach, kill, capture, or handle it. Tell the veterinary team what you observed from a safe distance, if anything.

Does a rattlesnake vaccine mean my dog will not need emergency care?

No. Merck says a vaccine may reduce the effects of a rattlesnake bite, but it does not prevent all bites or replace urgent veterinary assessment.
