That is why a list of “six state animals” can be useful as a short introduction but cannot be presented as Kentucky’s complete current inventory.
For a six-animal overview, the clearest selection is the Kentucky cardinal, honeybee, viceroy butterfly, gray squirrel, Thoroughbred horse, and Treeing Walker Coonhound. Kentucky law also recognizes the eastern spotted skunk and eastern hellbender in designations that took effect in 2026, plus related categories for official pets and a state fossil.

Why “six state animals” is not the complete legal list
Kentucky Revised Statutes Chapter 2 treats animal symbols as individual designations rather than as one master list. The chapter index reviewed for the 2026 Regular Session was updated October 9, 2026, and includes separate sections for the state bird, agricultural insect, butterfly, wild animal game species, horse, dog, nongame mammal, and amphibian. It also lists official pets and a state fossil.
Three of the designations are new in 2026. Senate Bill 37 was signed on April 27, 2026, as Acts Chapter 200. The statutes naming the Treeing Walker Coonhound, eastern spotted skunk, and eastern hellbender each specify an effective date of July 15, 2026. Any article that treats six animals as the entire current list is therefore incomplete.

The six below are an educational selection of familiar symbols, not a statutory count. They cover six different legal categories and make a practical starting point for students, families, and readers asking what animals represent Kentucky.
The six familiar Kentucky symbols at a glance
| Animal | Kentucky designation | Statutory section | What the law says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kentucky cardinal | State bird | KRS 2.080 | “The native redbird, commonly known as the Kentucky cardinal (cardinalis), is the official state bird of Kentucky.” |
| Honeybee | State agricultural insect | KRS 2.081 | “The honeybee is named and designated as the official state agricultural insect of Kentucky.” |
| Viceroy butterfly | State butterfly | KRS 2.083 | “The viceroy butterfly is named and designated as the state butterfly.” |
| Gray squirrel | State wild animal game species | KRS 2.085 | “The gray squirrel is named and designated as the state wild animal game species.” |
| Thoroughbred horse | State horse | KRS 2.087 | “The Thoroughbred horse is named and designated as the state horse of Kentucky.” |
| Treeing Walker Coonhound | State dog | KRS 2.071 | “The Treeing Walker Coonhound is named and designated as the official state dog of Kentucky.” |
The six selected symbols explained
Kentucky cardinal: the state bird
Kentucky’s bird designation uses the formal phrase “native redbird” and identifies the familiar bird as the Kentucky cardinal. The statute places it in the state-bird category, not in a general “state animal” category. That distinction matters when comparing Kentucky with states whose laws use a single state-animal label.
The cardinal is often the easiest symbol for children to recognize, so it works well as the opening example in a lesson about civic symbols. When accuracy matters, use the legal name from KRS 2.080 rather than shortening the designation to “Kentucky’s state animal.”

Honeybee: the state agricultural insect
Kentucky’s law identifies the honeybee as the official state agricultural insect. This category connects the symbol specifically to agriculture; it is not simply a general insect designation. The wording also shows why categories should not be flattened into one list: the honeybee represents an agricultural role, while the cardinal represents the state’s bird category.

For a classroom chart, label the honeybee “state agricultural insect” in full. That wording preserves the legal distinction and avoids suggesting that Kentucky has only one official insect-related symbol.
Viceroy butterfly: the state butterfly
The viceroy has its own statutory category as Kentucky’s state butterfly. It should be listed separately from the honeybee even though both are insects in everyday conversation. The law gives the butterfly a dedicated designation rather than placing it under the agricultural-insect heading.
This makes the viceroy useful in lessons about how legislatures classify symbols: one state can recognize several invertebrates while assigning each a different official role.

Kentucky designates the gray squirrel as its state wild animal game species. “Game species” is the operative legal category; it does not mean that the statute is naming a generic state mammal. In a fact sheet or quiz, retain the complete phrase so readers understand what the designation actually covers.

The gray squirrel also illustrates why a short list can be misleading. A reader might expect a state-mammal title, but Kentucky’s statute uses the narrower wild-animal-game wording instead.
Thoroughbred horse: the state horse
The Thoroughbred is Kentucky’s state horse under KRS 2.087. This is a dedicated horse designation, separate from the wild-animal and mammal categories. The statutory wording names the breed type directly, so “horse” alone loses useful precision.
Use “Thoroughbred horse” when labeling a map, worksheet, or display. It distinguishes Kentucky’s official horse from any broader claim that every horse associated with the state has the same legal status.

Eastern spotted skunk: state nongame mammal
KRS 2.075 names the eastern spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius) as Kentucky’s official state nongame mammal. The statute became effective July 15, 2026. “Nongame mammal” is a specific legal category and should not be replaced with the broader phrase “state mammal.”
Its inclusion is one reason a six-item article needs a qualification. The eastern spotted skunk is an official Kentucky animal symbol even though it is not part of the six-animal educational selection above.
Eastern hellbender: state amphibian
KRS 2.076 names the eastern hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) as Kentucky’s official state amphibian, also effective July 15, 2026. This is Kentucky’s amphibian category, distinct from the bird, insect, butterfly, game-species, horse, dog, and nongame-mammal designations.

Including the hellbender in a current reference is essential. A list written before the 2026 effective date may be historically accurate for that earlier period but not current for readers consulting Kentucky law after July 15, 2026.
Official pets: a related category for domestic cats and dogs
Senate Bill 37 also included official-pet provisions for qualifying domestic cats and dogs associated with shelters and residency requirements described in the enacted law. This category is different from the state-dog designation: the Treeing Walker Coonhound is a named breed selected as the state dog, while official pets are a separate statutory recognition involving domestic cats and dogs that meet the law’s conditions.
Do not count “official pets” as one additional species or breed. It is a legal category, not a single animal designation.
How Kentucky’s animal categories differ
| Category | What it identifies | Example |
|---|---|---|
| State bird | A bird selected as Kentucky’s official bird | Native redbird, commonly called the Kentucky cardinal |
| State agricultural insect | An insect recognized in an agricultural context | Honeybee |
| State butterfly | The butterfly named by statute | Viceroy butterfly |
| State wild animal game species | A species assigned the game-animal designation | Gray squirrel |
| State horse | The horse named as Kentucky’s official horse | Thoroughbred |
| State dog | The breed named as Kentucky’s official dog | Treeing Walker Coonhound |
| State nongame mammal | A mammal recognized outside the game-species category | Eastern spotted skunk |
| State amphibian | The amphibian named by statute | Eastern hellbender |
These categories are not competing titles. Kentucky can recognize a bird, an insect, a butterfly, a game species, a horse, a dog, a nongame mammal, and an amphibian at the same time because each designation answers a different legislative purpose.
How to present the list accurately
- State the scope first. Say that you are presenting six familiar symbols, not the complete inventory in Kentucky law.
- Use the legal category with each animal. “Gray squirrel” alone is less precise than “state wild animal game species: gray squirrel.”
- Separate older and newer designations. Identify the Treeing Walker Coonhound, eastern spotted skunk, and eastern hellbender as effective July 15, 2026.
- Check the date of the source. Kentucky’s Chapter 2 index reviewed for the 2026 Regular Session was updated October 9, 2026; older reference materials may predate the new statutes.
- Do not invent a canonical number six. Kentucky law does not establish a universal six-animal list.
A Kentucky symbols activity for children
Kentucky Tourism offers downloadable coloring pages featuring official symbols, including the cardinal, Thoroughbred, and gray squirrel. Those pages can support a classroom or family activity: assign one page to each legal category, have children copy the exact designation, and ask them to mark whether the symbol is a bird, insect, butterfly, game species, or horse.
For a worksheet, leave space for the three 2026 additions as well. That prevents students from learning an outdated six-item list and reinforces the difference between a selected group and the full set of current categories.
The bottom line on Kentucky’s “six state animals”
The cardinal, honeybee, viceroy butterfly, gray squirrel, Thoroughbred horse, and Treeing Walker Coonhound form a clear six-animal introduction. They are not Kentucky’s complete legal list. As of the 2026 statutes, Kentucky also recognizes the eastern spotted skunk as state nongame mammal and the eastern hellbender as state amphibian, while maintaining separate official-pet and state-fossil categories. The accurate answer depends on naming each animal’s statutory category and stating that the six-item format is a selection.
