King Shepherd: Dog Breed Characteristics & Care

King Shepherds are very large American shepherds with specialty registries, but the name is not consistently used and the breed is not on the AKC’s official list. Learn what to expect for size, temperament, care, health screening, and choosing a responsible breeder or rescue dog.

A King Shepherd is a very large American shepherd type developed from German Shepherd-related lines and other breeds. Some specialty organizations publish standards and keep pedigrees for King Shepherds, but the breed is not on the American Kennel Club’s official breed list, and the name is not used consistently across the marketplace.

Expect an intelligent, active, shedding dog that may be vigilant and protective. Individual temperament and health vary, so verify a breeder’s registry, pedigree, health testing, and family history—and be prepared for careful training, supervision, and the costs of caring for a giant dog.

King Shepherd quick facts

Characteristic What to know
Type and status American shepherd type with specialty and rare-breed registries; not listed as an official AKC breed.
Reported origin United States; commonly described as emerging in the 1990s.
Ancestry German Shepherd-related lines and additional breeds; the mix varies by program.
Size Published standards set minimum heights of 27 inches for males and 25 inches for females. Weight minimums vary by organization.
Coat Thick, medium-to-long double coat with substantial shedding.
Temperament Often described as intelligent, loyal, vigilant, and trainable; behavior depends on the individual dog and its background.
Exercise About 60–90 minutes of combined activity and enrichment may be a starting point for some healthy adults, not a fixed breed requirement.
Care considerations Large-dog management, orthopedic screening, controlled growth, grooming, training, and veterinary costs.

Is the King Shepherd a real breed?

It depends on what you mean by “breed.” The King Shepherd is a deliberately developed dog type with written standards and specialty registries. The American Rare Breed Association publishes a King Shepherd standard, and specialty organizations maintain pedigrees. However, the King Shepherd does not appear on the AKC’s official breed list. Registry recognition is not the same as AKC recognition, and it does not establish a single, uniform ancestry for every dog sold under the name.

The name is used inconsistently. A documented registry-bred King Shepherd has pedigree records tied to a defined program. A King Shepherd-type dog may resemble the type without verifiable ancestry. Other dogs marketed as King Shepherds may simply be oversized German Shepherds or German Shepherd mixes. A listing, appearance, or large size alone cannot prove pedigree.

History and ancestry

Commonly reported histories place the development of King Shepherds in the United States during the 1990s and associate early efforts with breeders David Turkheimer and Shelley Watts-Cross. The American King Shepherd Club describes selected German Shepherd lines as part of the foundation. The American King Shepherd Club International lists European German Shepherds, Shiloh Shepherds, Alaskan Malamutes, and Akitas among its ancestry claims. Other accounts mention additional breeds in some lines.

These are histories of particular breeding programs, not a universal genetic recipe. Ask for a dog’s actual pedigree and the name of the registry and standard used by its breeder.

How big does a King Shepherd get?

Published standards differ. The following figures describe two organizations’ standards, not a target weight or guarantee for an individual dog.

Measurement ARBA standard American King Shepherd Club standard
Male height Minimum 27 inches; ideal 29 inches or more Minimum 27 inches
Female height Minimum 25 inches; ideal 27 inches or more Minimum 25 inches
Male weight Minimum 110 pounds; ideal 130–150 pounds Minimum 110 pounds; ideal 120–145 pounds
Female weight Minimum 75 pounds; ideal 90–110 pounds Minimum 80 pounds; ideal 90–110 pounds
Maturity Minimum height assessed at maturity, defined as 3 years The cited size guidance does not make the same maturity statement

See the ARBA standard and American King Shepherd Club standard for their respective figures. A dog may keep filling out after its first birthday. Heavier is not automatically healthier: excess weight can strain joints and impair mobility. Ask your veterinarian to assess body condition, gait, and growth rather than aiming for a registry’s ideal weight.

Appearance, coat, and colors

King Shepherds are generally described as large and substantial, with a broad chest, strong bone, upright ears, a thick tail, and a body slightly longer than it is tall. Their medium-to-long double coat may have a straight or somewhat wavy outer layer and sheds heavily, especially during seasonal coat changes.

The ARBA standard describes coarse-haired and long-haired varieties and accepts a range of sable and black-saddle patterns; it disqualifies white, blue, and liver-colored dogs. Other programs may describe different colors. Ask which registry’s standard applies, and prioritize health, temperament, structure, and documentation over color claims.

Temperament and family life

Published standards emphasize intelligence, vigilance, faithfulness, courage, working ability, and a companionable nature. A King Shepherd may be closely bonded to its household, responsive to consistent training, alert to activity, or reserved around unfamiliar people. It may also bark when bored, alarmed, frustrated, or under-socialized.

The breed name does not guarantee that an individual dog will be gentle, safe off leash, comfortable with every visitor or animal, or suitable for protection work. Genetics, early handling, socialization, training, health, and environment all influence behavior.

Are King Shepherds good with children?

A stable, well-socialized individual may be affectionate with children in its family, but supervision and management are essential. A very large dog can accidentally knock over a small child, and herding or guarding behavior may include chasing, circling, blocking, or barking.

  • Never leave young children alone with a dog.
  • Teach children not to climb on, hug tightly, corner, or disturb the dog while it rests.
  • Children should not take food, chews, or toys from the dog or follow it into its retreat area.
  • Give the dog a child-free resting place and separate dog and child if the dog turns away, freezes, hides, growls, or shows other signs of stress.

Can King Shepherds live with other pets?

Some can live successfully with other dogs, cats, or livestock, but socialization does not guarantee compatibility or erase guarding, herding, or predatory behavior. Introduce animals carefully, use gates and separate feeding areas, and give smaller pets safe escape routes. Supervise around livestock and seek qualified help for resource guarding, fear, stalking, or aggression.

Exercise and enrichment

Some consumer guides suggest 60–90 minutes of daily exercise for an adult, but this is a starting range rather than a validated King Shepherd requirement. Adjust activity for age, health, conditioning, weather, and the individual dog. A routine can include walks or hikes, sniffing, obedience practice, scent games, food puzzles, controlled retrieving, and rest. A yard alone does not provide adequate exercise or enrichment.

Exercise for puppies

Large and giant dogs grow for an extended period. Veterinary guidance places large-breed growth broadly around 18 months and giant-breed growth around 18–24 months, with individual variation. Until your veterinarian advises that a growing dog is ready, avoid repetitive forced running, high jumps, hard stops, and intense exercise on slippery surfaces. Short walks, supervised play, sniffing, and training are more appropriate than conditioning a puppy like an adult athlete. See VCA’s large- and giant-breed guidance and VCA’s puppy exercise guidance.

Training and socialization

Start training when the puppy comes home and continue through adolescence and adulthood. Prioritize calm, reliable behavior and physical manageability rather than intimidation.

  • Practice attention, name recognition, recall, and loose-leash walking.
  • Teach sit, down, stay, place, leave it, and drop it.
  • Build calm greetings and a predictable visitor routine.
  • Teach safe behavior around doors, fences, roads, vehicles, and livestock.
  • Make grooming, veterinary handling, crate use, travel, and confinement rewarding experiences.
  • Gradually expose the puppy to household sounds, surfaces, people, and calm dogs; ask your veterinarian about disease risks and safe puppy classes.

Merck Veterinary Manual’s social-behavior guidance and the AVSAB puppy-socialization statement support early, positive experiences. Avoid intimidation, physical punishment, and “dominance” methods; these can increase fear and conflict. Consult a qualified reward-based trainer or veterinary behavior professional for serious problems.

Feeding and growth management

There is no universal number of cups, calories, or protein percentage for every King Shepherd. Needs vary by age, activity, body condition, and health.

  • Feed puppies a complete and balanced food formulated for growth of large-size dogs.
  • Measure portions rather than free-feeding; weighing food can be more consistent than using a cup.
  • Keep growing puppies lean and have your veterinarian monitor growth and body condition.
  • Do not add calcium or vitamin-mineral supplements unless your veterinarian prescribes them.
  • Adjust adult portions for activity, age, body condition, treats, and medical needs.

The VCA large- and giant-breed nutrition resource and AAHA feeding guidance offer further guidance. Ask your veterinarian to show you how to assess body condition rather than trying to reach a published weight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Health and preventive care

There is no clearly established, representative dataset showing how often specific diseases occur in King Shepherds. Online lists often extrapolate from German Shepherd ancestry, other large breeds, or individual reports. Treat these as potential concerns, not proven breed-wide disease rates, and ask about the health history of the actual family line.

Hip and elbow dysplasia

Hip and elbow dysplasia merit attention given the dog’s size and ancestry. Signs can include limping, stiffness after rest, reluctance to rise or climb, reduced stamina, hind-limb weakness, or pain. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals explains that hip dysplasia has genetic and environmental influences, including caloric intake and exercise. OFA final hip and elbow evaluations are performed at 24 months or older; earlier preliminary evaluations are not a substitute for final adult results. See OFA hip-screening procedures, preliminary evaluations, and elbow FAQs.

Degenerative myelopathy

Degenerative myelopathy (DM) is associated with a SOD1 variant found in several breeds, including German Shepherds. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory notes that crossbred dogs can also be affected and that inheritance is autosomal recessive with incomplete penetrance. A DNA result describes status or risk, not a certain diagnosis:

  • N/N: Does not carry the tested variant.
  • N/DM: A carrier, generally not expected to develop SOD1-associated DM, but able to pass the variant to offspring.
  • DM/DM: At increased risk, but not every genetically affected dog develops clinical disease.

Gastric dilatation-volvulus

Large, deep-chested dogs may be at risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), a life-threatening emergency. Seek emergency veterinary care immediately for repeated unproductive retching, restlessness, excessive drooling, a swollen or painful abdomen, rapid breathing, weakness, collapse, or pale gums. Do not wait to see whether symptoms improve. The Merck Veterinary Manual explains GDV signs and emergency treatment. Ask your veterinarian about feeding routines and whether preventive gastropexy is appropriate; gastropexy does not prevent every case of stomach dilation.

Other concerns and lifespan

Allergies, thyroid or eye problems, digestive conditions, and cancer are among conditions mentioned in consumer breed guides, but their frequency in King Shepherds is not established by the evidence reviewed. Ask about diagnoses, age at diagnosis, and cause and age of death among close relatives. Online lifespan estimates vary, and no representative King Shepherd longevity study was identified; any precise lifespan figure should be treated as an estimate, not a promise.

Schedule regular veterinary examinations, preventive care appropriate to your region, dental care, and weight monitoring. Promptly discuss persistent limping, stiffness, weakness, exercise intolerance, digestive problems, or changes in appetite, energy, or behavior with your veterinarian.

Grooming and shedding

Expect substantial shedding from a thick double coat. Brushing two or three times weekly is a reasonable baseline for many dogs; long coats or seasonal shedding may require daily brushing. Use tools suited to the coat without scraping the skin. Trim nails regularly, check ears weekly, and brush teeth or follow a veterinarian-approved dental routine. Bathe when dirty or odorous rather than on a fixed schedule. King Shepherds are not hypoallergenic; this coat is a poor fit for a household unwilling to manage shed hair.

Choosing a breeder or adopting

Before paying a deposit, ask the breeder for:

  1. The dog’s pedigree and registration documents, and the registry and written standard used.
  2. Verifiable hip and elbow results for both parents, including evaluator or registration details.
  3. Relevant DNA test results, including DM testing when appropriate for the line.
  4. Health, longevity, and temperament history for parents and close relatives.
  5. Puppy veterinary, microchip, vaccination, and parasite-control records.
  6. A written contract, return-to-breeder clause, and details of how puppies are socialized.

AKC resources on health testing and German Shepherd testing recommendations can provide context, but the latter is not a King Shepherd-specific standard. Be wary of extreme size promises, unsupported claims of superior health, vague “health tested” claims, pressure to pay before seeing documentation, or marketing focused on aggression or unusual colors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When adopting, treat the breed label as an appearance-based description unless pedigree is documented. Ask about behavior with children, visitors, dogs, cats, livestock, and handling; medical history; triggers; and trial or foster-to-adopt options. Evaluate the individual dog and involve a qualified professional if its history is incomplete or concerning.

King Shepherd versus German Shepherd

Question King Shepherd German Shepherd
Registry status Some specialty and rare-breed organizations publish standards or keep pedigrees; not listed by the AKC. Established AKC-recognized breed with a widely used standard.
Size Published standards call for a very large dog, with male minimums commonly around 27 inches and 110 pounds. Size varies by individual and line; not every German Shepherd is small.
Ancestry Varies by registry and breeding program; includes German Shepherd-related lines and other breeds in reported histories. More consistently defined within established breed-registry systems.
Temperament May be loyal and vigilant; individual variation is substantial. Drive, sociability, and protective behavior vary by line and individual.
Health evidence Breed-wide prevalence data are limited; superior health is not established. More established breed-specific health-testing infrastructure, but no guarantee of individual health.
Practical care Its typical size can mean greater demands for food, equipment, space, and physical management. Still an active, powerful dog; needs vary by individual.

Neither label identifies the better dog for every home. Compare documented breeding, individual temperament, activity needs, and your ability to manage the adult dog. King Shepherd and Shiloh Shepherd are separate registry-defined types; compare the specific registry, pedigree, health practices, and temperament goals rather than relying on the name alone.

Is a King Shepherd right for you?

This type may suit a household prepared to provide daily activity and enrichment, reward-based training, secure management, visitor and pet supervision, grooming, and a budget for giant-dog veterinary care. It may be a poor fit if you want a low-maintenance first dog, cannot manage a powerful animal, cannot supervise children and small pets, or are attracted mainly to extreme size or an intimidating appearance. A guardian-type dog is not a shortcut to protection; responsible ownership requires careful socialization and training.

FAQ

Is a King Shepherd an AKC breed?

No. It is not on the AKC’s official breed list, though some specialty and rare-breed organizations publish standards or maintain pedigrees.

Is a King Shepherd just a German Shepherd mix?

Not necessarily. Documented programs use German Shepherd-related lines and additional breeds, but ancestry varies. Some dogs marketed as King Shepherds have no verifiable pedigree.

How big does a full-grown King Shepherd get?

Published standards generally set minimum heights at 27 inches for males and 25 inches for females. Weight guidance varies by organization. These are standards, not weight goals for every individual.

Are King Shepherds aggressive?

Aggression is not inevitable. Genetics, health, socialization, training, and environment matter. Because the dog can be very large and powerful, seek qualified help for fear, guarding, or aggression concerns.

Are King Shepherds good with children?

A well-socialized individual may be affectionate with family children, but no dog is automatically safe with every child. Supervise interactions, teach children respectful behavior, and provide the dog a child-free retreat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are King Shepherds healthier than German Shepherds?

There is no robust breed-wide evidence establishing that King Shepherds have fewer health problems or live longer. Review verifiable tests and the health history of the actual family line.

What health tests should a breeder provide?

Ask for verifiable hip and elbow evaluations for both parents and relevant DNA testing, such as DM testing where appropriate. Also ask about other line-specific examinations and the health history of close relatives.

How much should a King Shepherd eat?

There is no universal amount. Feed a complete large-breed growth diet to puppies, control portions, monitor body condition, and adjust feeding with veterinary guidance.
