NPR and Houston Public Media described Ben as a certified emotional support animal. That designation is different from calling him a service dog, a description that should not be applied here. For Herbstreit, Ben was both a family companion and a steady presence during an unusually demanding travel schedule.
Ben’s cancer battle began in 2024
According to ESPN, Ben was diagnosed with leukemia in March 2024. In July, he underwent major surgery to remove cancerous masses from his spleen and intestine. Later reports described chemotherapy and a worsening condition, including loss of use of his hind legs and difficulty eating normally.
The published reports do not use exactly the same diagnostic terminology. ESPN referred to leukemia, while The Washington Post described the illness as lymphoma and leukemia. For that reason, it is more accurate to refer to Ben’s illness generally as cancer unless a specific label is attributed to the reporting outlet.

Ben’s treatment history is a record of what happened in his individual case, not veterinary guidance for other dogs. College GameDay paid tribute to Ben
