“Bugs” on kittens can mean external parasites—fleas, ticks, or ear mites—or intestinal parasites such as roundworms and tapeworms. The safest response depends on which parasite is involved and on your kitten’s age, weight, health, and exposure. Ask a veterinarian to identify the problem and choose age-appropriate prevention or treatment; never use a dog flea or tick product on a cat.

What “bugs” can affect a kitten?

Different parasites call for different checks and treatments. Itching or visible insects may point to an external parasite, while intestinal parasites can be present without obvious signs. A veterinary exam—and, when appropriate, testing—helps distinguish them.

Parasite What to watch for How it is assessed
Fleas Itching, scratching, irritated skin, or visible fleas and flea dirt Veterinary assessment of the kitten and the home environment
Ticks An attached tick; later, signs such as weakness, lethargy, or reduced appetite Careful removal and veterinary advice if the kitten becomes unwell
Ear mites Ear scratching, irritation, or dark discharge—signs that can also have other causes Ear examination with an otoscope or microscopic examination of ear debris
Intestinal parasites Some infections may not be apparent from appearance alone Stool testing and parasite-specific veterinary guidance

Why fleas are a bigger concern than itching

Fleas can damage skin, contribute to infection, and carry infectious agents. A kitten with a heavy flea burden can lose enough blood to develop anemia. As Cornell veterinarian William Miller Jr. puts it, “It doesn’t take too much of this sucking to cause anemia in a kitten that is carrying innumerable fleas.”

Fleas also reproduce in the environment, so treating only the kitten may leave an ongoing source of exposure. Under ideal conditions, Cornell reports that a flea can lay at least 20 eggs a day; the page says this could eventually lead to about 20,000 new adult fleas in 60 days. Those figures describe ideal conditions, not a typical outcome in every home.

How to handle a tick on your kitten

If you find an attached tick, remove it carefully rather than squeezing or pulling at its body. Wear gloves, use fine-point tweezers or a tick-removal device, grasp the tick where it attaches to the skin, and pull straight outward.

Ear scratching or dark discharge needs a diagnosis

Ear mites can cause scratching, irritation, and dark discharge, but those signs do not prove that mites are the cause. A veterinarian can examine the ear with an otoscope or inspect collected debris under a microscope to distinguish mites from other ear problems. Follow the veterinarian’s treatment directions rather than putting an unprescribed product into the ear.

Worms require testing and age-appropriate care

Roundworms and other intestinal parasites affect kittens, and an infected kitten may not look ill. Stool testing can help identify parasites and guide parasite-specific treatment. Tapeworm risk is linked to swallowing infected fleas during grooming or eating an infected rodent, so controlling fleas and rodents can help reduce reinfection.

The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) recommends intestinal parasite testing at least four times during a kitten’s first year, with frequency adjusted for health and lifestyle. CAPC’s guidance describes deworming beginning at two weeks of age and repeating every two weeks until regular broad-spectrum parasite control begins. These are veterinary recommendations, not a do-it-yourself medication schedule; ask your veterinarian what timing and treatment fit your kitten.

Choose prevention with a veterinarian

Parasite products differ in what they cover, how they are given, how often they are used, and which kittens may receive them. A veterinarian can match a product and schedule to your kitten’s age, weight, health, likely exposures, and local risks. Use the current product label and the veterinarian’s directions; schedules and eligibility are not interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Coverage: Check whether the product addresses fleas, ticks, heartworm, intestinal worms, or only some of these.
  • Eligibility: Confirm minimum age and weight and any health-related restrictions on the current label.
  • Form and administration: Products may be topical, oral, or collars. Choose only an option your household can administer correctly.
  • Exposure: Discuss indoor or outdoor access, other pets, local parasite risks, and travel.
  • Safety and follow-up: Ask about species-specific labeling, possible reactions, testing, and whether other animals or the home also need attention.

Never apply dog flea or tick medication to a cat; the AVMA warns that the consequences can be deadly. No preventive product is completely effective, so continue to watch for signs and follow the veterinarian’s plan.

Include the home in flea and parasite control

Because fleas can persist in the living space, flea control needs to address both the kitten and the environment. Ask your veterinarian how to manage the home safely, especially when other pets are present. Cleaning and sanitation, flea control, and rodent control can also reduce some routes of intestinal parasite reinfection. A fine-toothed flea comb can help with grooming and inspection, but it is not a treatment or a substitute for veterinary care.
