If your cat ignores catnip, that is usually normal. Cats vary in their response, and genetics appears to play a role: one 2017 study found that 32 of 99 cats did not respond, while VCA Animal Hospitals estimates that about half of cats do not. Young kittens may also be too young to react. If you want to offer scent enrichment, silver vine is one option to try, but no plant works for every cat.
Why doesn’t my cat react to catnip?
Catnip’s characteristic effect is associated with nepetalactone, a compound cats encounter by smelling the plant. Cats differ in whether they respond, and in how they respond: some become more active, while others appear relaxed. Eating catnip is not required for the scent-related reaction.

The estimates of nonresponse vary by source. A 2017 study of 100 domestic cats found that 32 of the 99 cats with reported results did not respond. VCA Animal Hospitals gives a broader estimate of approximately half of cats. These figures describe different sources and samples, not a fixed rate for every population.
Could my cat be too young?
Yes. VCA says young kittens may not respond to catnip until around six months of age. A kitten’s indifference now does not establish how it will respond as an adult.

What can I try if my cat ignores catnip?
You can offer another plant scent as optional enrichment and see whether your cat shows interest. In the 2017 study, nearly 80% of the tested cats responded to silver vine. Almost 75% of the cats that did not respond to catnip responded to silver vine. About half of the tested cats responded to Tatarian honeysuckle, and about half to valerian; roughly one third of catnip nonresponders responded to Tatarian honeysuckle.
These are study results, not predictions for an individual cat. The study used silver-vine fruit galls predominantly, though some cats also responded to the wood. Silver vine (also called matatabi) is sold in forms such as powder and enrichment toys. Offer it as an experiment, not as a treatment or a guaranteed substitute.

How should I offer catnip safely?
Catnip is an optional form of enrichment, not something a cat needs. Let your cat approach and explore it rather than trying to force a reaction. If your cat shows unwanted signs, remove the material. Texas A&M notes that excess exposure can lead to nausea or vomiting; ASPCA lists vomiting and diarrhea among signs associated with catnip exposure. Contact a veterinarian if symptoms are concerning or persist.
Lori Teller, a clinical associate professor at Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, said catnip can affect cats for “about 15-30 minutes after exposure.” That is an explanatory estimate, not a duration guaranteed for every cat.
