The Korat is a rare Thai cat breed with a silver-blue coat, heart-shaped face and unusually people-focused personality. It is easy to groom, but it needs more than admiration: daily companionship, interactive play and mental enrichment are central to a good Korat home.

What is a Korat?

The Korat is a rare, naturally occurring cat breed from Thailand, recognized for its close-lying silver-blue coat, heart-shaped face, luminous eyes and strong attachment to its people. It is relatively easy to groom, but it is not a cat to choose solely for its striking appearance: a Korat usually needs daily companionship, interactive play and meaningful mental stimulation.

The breed is also known by the Thai name Si-Sawat and has a long-standing association with good fortune. That cultural tradition is an important part of Korat history, not a measurable promise about what happens when someone owns one. For a prospective owner, the more practical question is whether the household can provide a social, intelligent cat with regular attention.

Korat history and Thai heritage

The Korat originated in Thailand and is considered a natural breed: its defining appearance developed without the extensive reshaping associated with some modern selectively bred varieties. The Thai name Si-Sawat is associated with the breed’s blue-gray, silvered appearance and with good fortune.

The Cat-Book of Poems from the Ayudhya period is often cited in accounts of the breed’s early history. Traditional accounts also describe Korats being given as gifts to brides. These stories help explain why the breed has cultural significance in Thailand, but they should be kept separate from modern advice about feeding, health or behavior.

Korat availability outside Thailand can be limited. In practice, finding a well-documented kitten may require patience rather than an immediate purchase from the first seller using the word “Korat.”

Appearance: the heart-shaped face and silver-blue coat

Build

A Korat may look elegant and relatively small, but the impression can be misleading when the cat is picked up. The breed has a hard-bodied, muscular build, a broad chest and substantial weight for its size. Breed descriptions commonly call the shape compact or semi-cobby. It should look athletic and solid rather than delicate.

Head, ears and eyes

The head is the most immediately recognizable feature. The brow and cheek structure create a heart-shaped outline when the face is viewed from the front. Large ears reinforce the alert expression, while the large eyes give the breed a notably attentive, expressive look.

Young Korats may not yet have the fully mature eye color associated with adult cats. Kittens and adolescents can show yellow, amber or amber-green tones before the eyes develop toward luminous green or peridot shades. Physical maturity also develops gradually, so a young cat may not yet display the full proportions or intensity of color expected in an adult.

Coat and color

The Korat coat is short, fine and close to the body. Each hair is blue with silver tipping, producing the characteristic silver-blue sheen, especially in good light. In a breed-standard context, blue with silver is the defining recognized appearance; the breed should not be described as having a broad range of accepted colors.

Korat temperament and personality

Korats are generally intelligent, curious and highly interactive with the people they choose. Many enjoy following household activity, investigating new objects and participating in games rather than observing family life from a distance. They can be affectionate and physically close, but individual cats differ: not every Korat is equally vocal, constantly seeking to be held or eager to sit on a lap.

The breed’s intelligence can appear as persistence and problem-solving. A Korat may explore high places, investigate cabinets or learn that a particular behavior produces attention. That makes training and enrichment useful, but it also means a bored cat may invent its own entertainment.

Breed organizations describe Korats as active without necessarily being hyperactive. Their best play often combines movement and interaction: stalking a wand toy, chasing a tossed toy, retrieving an object or working out how to obtain a small food reward. They generally benefit more from an involved person than from a large pile of unattended toys.

Is a Korat a good family cat?

A Korat can suit a family that wants an engaged companion and can give the cat predictable attention. The strongest match is usually a household that can provide regular play, respectful handling and a safe place for the cat to retreat when it wants quiet.

  • For busy households: consider how often the cat would be alone, not just whether someone is technically home. A cat can be lonely even in a house where people come and go.
  • For families with children: teach children to allow the cat to approach, avoid chasing or restraining it and recognize signs that it wants space. Supervised, calm interaction is safer than assuming the breed will tolerate unlimited handling.
  • For homes with other pets: make introductions gradually, using separate resources and controlled contact. An established Korat may react poorly if a new pet suddenly appears to displace its attention or territory.
  • For quieter homes: a calm environment can work well if the cat still receives daily interaction and play. “Quiet” should not mean socially neglected.

There are no reliable breed-wide guarantees that every Korat will like dogs, other cats, strangers or children. Early socialization, individual temperament, previous experience and the quality of introductions all matter.

Exercise and enrichment for a Korat

Plan enrichment around both physical activity and mental involvement. Several short play sessions are often more practical than expecting a cat to exercise independently for a long stretch.

  1. Interactive wand play: Move the toy like prey, allowing the cat to stalk, pounce and periodically catch it. Store wand toys safely when play ends because strings and similar materials can be hazardous if swallowed.
  2. Food puzzles: A puzzle can turn part of a measured meal or treat allowance into a problem-solving activity. An interactive cat puzzle feeder is optional, not a required Korat purchase. Begin with an easy design and increase difficulty only if the cat understands the task and remains relaxed.
  3. Fetch and retrieval: Some Korats enjoy fetching toys. Follow the individual cat’s interest rather than assuming every cat will retrieve on cue.
  4. Reward-based training: Short sessions can teach simple behaviors such as responding to a name, touching a target or entering a carrier. Stop before the cat becomes frustrated.
  5. Vertical territory: A secure cat tree, shelf or perch gives an inquisitive Korat a safe way to survey the room and move away from busy traffic.
  6. Toy rotation: Keep a manageable selection available and rotate other safe toys periodically. Novelty can be more valuable than leaving every toy on the floor all the time.

Treats used in a puzzle or training session should come from the cat’s overall daily allowance. Puzzle feeding is enrichment, not permission to add unlimited calories.

Korat grooming and routine care

The short, single coat is one of the breed’s easier-care features. Korats generally shed lightly and do not need the intensive combing required by a long or densely coated cat. “Low maintenance” does not mean “no maintenance,” however.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Brush weekly: Use a soft short-hair brush or grooming mitt, adjusting the schedule to the cat’s shedding and tolerance. Keep sessions brief and reward cooperation.
  • Trim nails as needed: Nail growth and scratching habits vary. Introduce clippers gradually and remove only the sharp tip unless a veterinary professional shows you otherwise.
  • Care for the teeth: Gradually introduce a cat-safe toothbrush and toothpaste, or ask a veterinarian about an appropriate dental-care plan. Human toothpaste is not a substitute for cat-safe products.
  • Check the ears: Observe them periodically. Clean only when appropriate and with veterinary guidance; never push cotton swabs or other objects deeply into the ear canal.
  • Maintain preventive care: Regular examinations, vaccinations and parasite prevention should be tailored to the cat’s age, health, lifestyle and local veterinary recommendations.

The Korat is not hypoallergenic. A short coat or relatively light shedding does not eliminate the proteins that trigger cat allergies.

Feeding and weight management

There is no universal Korat portion or calorie prescription. Food requirements depend on age, body weight, activity, reproductive status, body condition, health and the energy density of the particular food.

Choose a complete and balanced cat food appropriate for the cat’s life stage, measure portions rather than relying on an always-full bowl, and monitor body condition. Ask a veterinarian to help select the diet and amount if the cat is growing, overweight, underweight, pregnant, nursing or managing a medical condition. Adjust portions with professional guidance when weight or body condition changes.

Korat health: what to ask a breeder

The most specific breed-related screening issue identified for Korats is gangliosidosis. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory lists tests for Korat GM1 and GM2 gangliosidosis. These are progressive neurologic diseases that can cause severe impairment and premature death.

UC Davis describes Korat GM2 as autosomal recessive. Affected kittens may develop early neurologic signs such as fine head tremors and ataxia, followed by rapid progression. When two carrier parents are bred, a proportion of their kittens is expected to be affected. That inheritance pattern is why parental records matter more than a vague statement that a kitten “looks healthy.”

Questions for a Korat breeder

  • Can you provide clear, verifiable results for both Korat GM1 and GM2 testing?
  • Are each parent’s results identified as normal, carrier or affected under the relevant test interpretation?
  • What is your plan for avoiding carrier-to-carrier matings?
  • Can I see the kitten’s veterinary examination, vaccination and deworming or parasite-prevention records?
  • Can you provide the parents’ registered names and relevant health documentation?
  • Will you provide a written contract, and what happens if a serious health problem is identified after purchase?
  • Will you take the cat back or help with rehoming if the owner can no longer keep it?

DNA screening is valuable but limited. A result addresses particular genetic variants covered by the test; it does not guarantee that a cat is free from every inherited or acquired disease. It does not replace a veterinary examination, vaccination, preventive care or responsible breeding decisions.

How to find a Korat kitten responsibly

Because Korats are relatively rare, a responsible search may involve joining a waiting list. The Cat Fanciers’ Association recommends connecting with breeders through cat shows or its breeder resources, while The International Cat Association provides a Korat breeder-finding pathway and identifies a member-breeder code of ethics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These resources are useful starting points, not automatic guarantees. Association membership or directory presence does not by itself prove that a particular breeder provides excellent care. Evaluate the individual breeder’s communication, living conditions, records, contract and veterinary support.

Prefer a breeder who is willing to discuss health testing, lets you ask detailed questions, explains socialization and does not pressure you into an immediate payment. Be cautious if a seller:

  • cannot explain the kitten’s ancestry or provide consistent records;
  • refuses reasonable questions about GM1 and GM2 testing;
  • uses unusual coat colors as a sales pitch for a “rare” standard Korat;
  • will not explain where the cats are raised or how they are socialized;
  • pressures you to pay immediately or avoids a written contract; or
  • treats a directory listing, DNA result or registration document as proof of overall health.

A shelter or rescue may occasionally have a cat described as a Korat or Korat mix. Remember that a blue-gray coat alone cannot establish breed, but a cat does not need a pedigree to be a wonderful companion. Be precise about what is known and unknown about any individual animal.

Common Korat misconceptions

Is every gray cat a Korat?
No. Many domestic cats have blue-gray coats. A Korat requires documented ancestry and the broader set of breed characteristics, not color alone.
Are Korats hypoallergenic?
No. Their short coat may shed lightly, but that does not make the breed low-allergen or safe for people with cat allergies.
Do Korats need no grooming?
No. They need relatively little grooming, commonly including weekly brushing, but still require normal nail, dental and ear care.
Are all Korats vocal or lap cats?
No. Breed tendencies do not determine every individual’s communication style or tolerance for handling.
Do Korats dislike other animals?
Not necessarily. Compatibility depends on the individual animals and the introduction process. A new pet can nevertheless cause stress or jealousy if introduced abruptly.
Does a genetic test prove a Korat is completely healthy?
No. GM1 and GM2 testing addresses specific known genetic concerns. It does not replace routine veterinary care or screen for every possible condition.
Does every Korat need a puzzle feeder?
No. Puzzle feeders are one optional way to provide enrichment. Some cats prefer simpler toys, and new food puzzles should be introduced gradually.

Is the Korat right for you?

Choose a Korat if you want a distinctive, intelligent companion and can provide regular human interaction, interactive play, safe climbing or perching options and routine veterinary care. The breed’s short coat keeps grooming manageable, but its social and mental needs are more significant than its grooming needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think carefully before choosing one if the cat would routinely be alone for long periods, if the household expects a passive pet or if there is no willingness to research breeders and request GM1 and GM2 documentation. The decisive Korat question is not simply whether you admire a silver-blue coat. It is whether you can make room for a curious, people-focused cat in the daily life of the household.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Korat cat’s personality like?

The Korat is generally intelligent, affectionate, playful and strongly attached to household members. It tends to seek interaction rather than being content to be ignored, although individual cats vary in vocalness, sociability and tolerance for handling.

Are Korats good with families and other pets?

Yes, a Korat can be a good family cat when children interact calmly and respectfully and the cat has a quiet retreat. Supervise children and introduce other pets gradually.

Are Korat cats hypoallergenic?

No. Korats have a short coat and may shed lightly, but they are not hypoallergenic. Cat allergens are not eliminated by having a short coat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What health tests should a Korat breeder provide?

Ask for documented results for Korat GM1 and GM2 gangliosidosis testing for the parents, along with veterinary, vaccination and parasite-prevention records. Genetic testing is important but does not guarantee overall health.

The Bottom Line

The Korat is a silver-blue Thai breed with modest grooming requirements and substantial companionship needs. Provide daily interaction, play and mental enrichment, feed according to the individual cat’s condition, and ask breeders specifically for documented Korat GM1 and GM2 testing alongside ordinary veterinary records.
