Its partial skeleton indicates an animal about 1.65 metres tall and approximately 100 kilograms—far heavier than a living emperor penguin. The species was formally described in 2017, so this is an explanation of what the fossil revealed rather than a recent-discovery report.
The find matters because its anatomy places giant body size very early in penguin evolution and suggests that extreme size evolved independently in more than one fossil-penguin lineage.

What was the giant New Zealand “waterbird”?
Kumimanu biceae was a colossal penguin that lived in the late Paleocene, about 55–60 million years ago. The species name was introduced in a 2017 paper in Nature Communications and in a contemporaneous account by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

What the name means
Te Papa explains that Kumimanu combines Māori words meaning “monster bird.” Biceae honours Beatrice, or “Bice,” Tennyson, the mother of curator Alan Tennyson. The museum gives the pronunciation of biceae as “beachy-eye.”
Where and when was it found?
Alan Tennyson and Paul Scofield found the fossil-bearing boulder on an Otago beach on New Zealand’s South Island in 2004. The rock was not immediately opened. Al Mannering began extracting the fossil material in 2015, eventually exposing bones from the flipper, torso and legs. Te Papa reported the new species on 13 December 2017, crediting Tennyson, Scofield, Vanesa De Pietri and Gerald Mayr with identifying it. The museum’s discovery account is available at Te Papa’s 2017 report.
| Milestone | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2004 | The fossil-bearing boulder was found on an Otago beach. |
| 2015 | Al Mannering began extracting the bones from the rock. |
| 2017 | Kumimanu biceae was formally described and publicised. |
| 2025 | A later paper proposed that another named giant, Kumimanu fordycei, might not be a separate species. |
New Zealand is an especially productive setting for this kind of discovery. Te Ara’s overview of the Cenozoic notes that the country was almost completely underwater for a long interval and that most of its Cenozoic fossils are marine. It also records penguin-like fossils dating to around 55 million years ago. That broad marine setting helps explain why ancient penguin remains occur in New Zealand sediments, although it does not by itself identify the Otago boulder’s precise environment. See Te Ara’s Cenozoic fossil overview.
How big was Kumimanu biceae?
The surviving skeleton is incomplete, so the figures describe a reconstructed living animal rather than a complete fossil or an exact weighing. Te Papa’s 2017 account estimates a height of about 1.65 metres and a mass of about 100 kilograms. The museum placed those estimates beside its published figures for an emperor penguin and an average human:

| Comparison | Estimated height | Reported mass | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kumimanu biceae | 1.65 metres | 100 kilograms | Reconstruction from a partial skeleton; Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, 2017 |
| Emperor penguin | 1.1 metres | 23 kilograms | Comparison figures reported by Te Papa in 2017 |
| Average human | 1.65 metres | 62 kilograms | Comparison figures reported by Te Papa in 2017 |
On those museum estimates, the extinct penguin would have stood as tall as the comparison human but carried substantially more mass. Its estimated weight was more than four times the emperor-penguin figure in the same account. That bulk would have affected how it moved on land, how much food it needed and how long it could potentially remain underwater, but the fossil does not preserve enough information to calculate those performance details directly.
What do the preserved bones tell us?
The fossil includes elements of the flipper, body and legs. Those parts are enough to establish a very large penguin and to estimate proportions, but they do not provide a complete picture of feathers, coloration, soft tissues or exact posture. No reconstruction should be treated as a photograph of the living bird.
Alan Tennyson stressed that limitation while describing the animal’s likely build: “It’s difficult to determine exactly what it would have looked like in life, but it would have been very impressive, as tall as many people, and a very solid, muscly animal built to withstand frequent deep dives to catch its prey.” The quotation appears in Te Papa’s institutional account.
A flipper built for underwater work
Penguin wings are transformed into stiff flippers rather than flying wings. In a giant species, the enlarged bones indicate a broad propulsive surface and a body capable of resisting the forces generated during diving. The available evidence supports a strong-swimming, deep-diving lifestyle, but it does not reveal a precise maximum depth, speed or hunting technique.

Why mass is harder to estimate than height
Height can be approximated by comparing the lengths and proportions of preserved limb bones with better-known penguins. Mass is more sensitive to assumptions about muscle, fat and organ volume, so a partial skeleton produces a wider range of plausible values than a living specimen on a scale. The 100-kilogram figure is therefore best read as a scientific estimate tied to the 2017 reconstruction, not a fixed property known to the nearest kilogram.
Why the fossil changed ideas about penguin evolution
The describing paper, “A Paleocene penguin from New Zealand substantiates multiple origins of gigantism in fossil Sphenisciformes,” argues that K. biceae sits outside a clade that contains several later giant penguins. In evolutionary terms, that placement means very large body size was not necessarily inherited from one giant ancestor. Instead, gigantism appears to have arisen independently in separate branches.
This is an example of convergent evolution: unrelated or distantly related lineages arrive at a similar body form because they face comparable ecological opportunities or pressures. Penguins became flightless divers early in their history. Once they were committed to underwater propulsion, a larger body could bring advantages such as greater energy reserves, improved heat retention and the ability to handle demanding dives. Those possible benefits are evolutionary explanations, not measurements taken from this individual fossil.
The 2017 analysis is important precisely because the animal is so old. A giant penguin in the late Paleocene shows that exceptional size appeared close to the beginning of the group’s history, rather than only after a long period in which all penguins remained small. The authors use its position on the penguin family tree to support multiple, independent origins of gigantism among fossil sphenisciforms. Read the primary description at Nature Communications.

How does it compare with later giant penguins?
“Giant penguin” is a description of body size, not a single species group. Fossil penguins reached large dimensions in more than one lineage, and their names and relationships can change as new bones are found and older material is reanalysed.
A 2025 paper on exceptionally preserved fossils from the Paleocene Waipara Greensand questions whether Kumimanu fordycei is sufficiently distinct from K. biceae. The authors point to overlap in scored characters and variation in humerus shape, and propose that K. fordycei could be a junior synonym of K. biceae. That is a taxonomic proposal, not an established consensus that erases the original 2017 species description. The argument is presented in the 2025 Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society paper.
The distinction matters because naming affects estimates of how many giant penguin species existed and how often large size evolved. If two named forms ultimately prove to be one species, apparent diversity decreases; if they remain separate, the fossil record preserves more than one giant form. Researchers resolve such questions by comparing diagnostic features across multiple specimens, not by size alone.
What scientists can—and cannot—say about its appearance
- Supported: It was a penguin from the late Paleocene, with flipper, body and leg bones large enough to indicate an animal about 1.65 metres tall and roughly 100 kilograms in the 2017 reconstruction.
- Strongly inferred: It was a powerful swimmer and diver. The robust skeleton is consistent with a muscular body adapted to repeated underwater foraging.
- Not recoverable from this fossil alone: Exact feather pattern, colour, beak soft tissues, vocalisations, precise swimming performance and a definitive adult body mass.
These boundaries are part of the result. A partial skeleton can answer questions about evolutionary relationships and approximate scale while leaving many life-appearance details unresolved. Illustrations that show a particular colour scheme or facial expression are reconstructions, not directly preserved evidence.

Why New Zealand’s fossil record is central to the story
New Zealand’s long marine history has preserved an unusually rich record of sea-connected animals. Because much of the country was underwater during the Cenozoic, marine sediments dominate its fossil record. Early penguin-like birds appear in deposits dating to around 55 million years ago, close to the age of K. biceae.
That setting does not mean every ancient New Zealand penguin lived in exactly the same habitat. Coastlines, water depth, prey and climate changed through the Cenozoic. It does mean that New Zealand provides a valuable sequence of early penguin fossils for testing when flightlessness, diving adaptations and large size appeared.
What the discovery means for understanding ancient animals
Kumimanu biceae links three lines of evidence: a dated Paleocene context, a recognisable penguin skeleton and body-size estimates far beyond living species. Together they show that the modern penguin body plan has deep roots and that its evolutionary experimentation included spectacular increases in size.

The fossil also demonstrates why museum preparation and taxonomic revision matter. The boulder was found in 2004, but its contents were not extracted until 2015. Only after preparation could researchers compare the bones, estimate proportions and test the animal’s position among fossil penguins. Later discoveries and reanalysis can refine the names and relationships without changing the basic fact that a giant penguin lived in New Zealand around 60 million years ago.
The bottom line
The “waterbird” was Kumimanu biceae, a late-Paleocene giant penguin from Otago. Its partial skeleton supports an estimated height of 1.65 metres and mass of about 100 kilograms, while its evolutionary placement indicates that penguin gigantism evolved more than once. Those estimates remain reconstructions, and the status of some other giant-penguin names is still being debated as new fossils are compared.
