The American bison is the largest living land mammal documented in Yellowstone National Park. The National Park Service (NPS) identifies bison as the largest land-dwelling mammal in North America, and its Yellowstone records support that answer for animals living in the park today.
The word “ever” needs care. The available NPS material establishes the modern bison record and a history stretching back more than 10,000 years, but it does not compare Yellowstone’s bison with every extinct animal that may have lived in the region. A careful answer is therefore: bison are Yellowstone’s largest living land mammals; an all-time prehistoric champion has not been established by the cited evidence.

The largest living land mammal in Yellowstone is the American bison
Yellowstone’s bison are the subspecies and population people usually mean when they picture a shaggy, hump-shouldered giant on the park’s grasslands. In its 2026 Yellowstone Resources and Issues Handbook, the National Park Service states, “The bison is the largest land mammal in North America.” That statement supplies a direct answer when the question concerns living land mammals in Yellowstone.
The wording matters because it defines the comparison. It concerns a land mammal living today, not every animal that might have existed in the Yellowstone region during its geological past. Within that present-day category, bison are the clear answer supported by the park’s own description. The reported maximum weights give the statement practical meaning rather than leaving “largest” as a vague impression based on appearance.

This is a size distinction, not a claim that bison dominate every wildlife category. Yellowstone has other large mammals that lead in different ways: elk are the park’s most abundant large mammal, while moose are the largest members of its deer family. Those descriptions answer questions about numbers and family classification, not overall body size.
The bison designation also refers to a living animal. A question about the largest creature across all of Yellowstone’s geological history would require a source that compares modern bison with extinct prehistoric fauna. The NPS material cited here does not make that comparison, so assigning an all-time prehistoric winner would go beyond the evidence.
What “largest” can mean in Yellowstone
Readers often combine several different questions in one sentence. Separating them prevents a technically correct animal from being attached to the wrong superlative.
- Largest living land mammal: American bison. This is the NPS-supported answer for Yellowstone wildlife today.
- Most abundant large mammal: Elk. “Most abundant” describes population size, not the mass of an individual animal.
- Largest member of the deer family: Moose. A moose can be the biggest cervid in the park without exceeding a bison in overall body mass.
- Largest animal to have existed in the region: unresolved by the cited sources. That version includes extinct animals and needs a geological comparison that is not provided here.
When a guide, quiz or conversation asks for Yellowstone’s “largest animal,” asking whether it means a living land mammal, the most numerous species or the largest deer is worthwhile. In ordinary present-day wildlife usage, “American bison” is the answer.
It is also useful to distinguish an individual animal’s size from a species’ population. One exceptionally large bull does not make bison the most numerous species, and a large herd does not mean each animal reaches the maximum weight. These are separate measurements and should be reported separately.
Bison size by sex
The NPS 2026 handbook gives separate maximum weights for male and female Yellowstone bison. These are reported upper limits, not an average for every animal or a guaranteed weight for an individual seen in the park.
| Bison | Maximum weight reported by NPS | Source context |
|---|---|---|
| Male | Up to 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms) | National Park Service, 2026 Yellowstone Resources and Issues Handbook |
| Female | Up to 1,100 pounds (500 kilograms) | National Park Service, 2026 Yellowstone Resources and Issues Handbook |
The difference between the reported male and female maxima explains why photographs can show substantial variation within the same species. Age, sex and individual condition all affect the size of an animal, so a smaller bison is not a different species and a large-looking animal should not be assigned a precise weight by sight.

“Up to” is an important qualification in both figures. It means the handbook records a maximum reported size, not that every mature male approaches 2,000 pounds or every female approaches 1,100 pounds. Field observers generally cannot determine an exact weight from a roadside view, and the figures should not be treated as a visual identification test.
These figures also explain why the NPS wording is useful. It identifies bison at the scale of North American land mammals rather than merely calling them “large.” The weight values provide a concrete sense of the animal’s upper size while preserving the qualification that they are maximum reports.
How many bison live in Yellowstone?
Size and population are separate measurements. The NPS gives a 2025 pre-calving estimate of nearly 5,300 bison in Yellowstone. The same NPS material says recent estimates have ranged from about 3,000 to nearly 6,000.
“Pre-calving” is important wording. It identifies when the estimate was made in the annual cycle, before new calves change the count. The figure is therefore a dated population estimate, not a permanent total or a promise that visitors will see thousands of animals together. Weather, seasonal movement, births, deaths and the method used to count animals can all affect an estimate from one period to the next.
The broad recent range should be read in the same way. It describes variation in reported estimates over time, not a contradiction over which number is “the real population.” For trip planning or a school project, cite the year and the pre-calving qualifier with the number. A later NPS update may report a different estimate, so a current visitor should check the park’s latest bison information rather than reuse the 2025 figure indefinitely.
Population size also does not predict where a person will encounter bison. Thousands of animals can be distributed across a large park, moving between seasonal habitats, while a particular road or valley has no animals at the moment of a visit. The estimate is useful ecological context, not a sighting guarantee.
A Yellowstone presence older than recorded history
Bison are not recent arrivals in the park. NPS archaeological evidence places bison in the Greater Yellowstone Area for more than 10,000 years. Yellowstone is also described by NPS as the only place in the United States where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric times.

That long presence includes a severe low point. By 1902, only 23 bison remained in Yellowstone, according to the NPS bison-management history. The number is a historical count reported by the park’s current management page; it is not a study published in 1902. Placing the count in that context matters because it shows how close the park’s long-running population came to disappearing.

Neither number should be turned into a claim that the population stayed at one level throughout the intervening millennia.
NPS now describes Yellowstone as holding the country’s largest bison population on public land. The modern status and the 1902 count belong to the same story: an animal with deep archaeological roots, a documented early-twentieth-century population of just 23, and a present-day population measured in thousands.
Where the park lists bison viewing opportunities
The NPS 2026 handbook identifies different viewing settings by season. The locations are opportunities rather than guarantees; wildlife moves, and conditions can change.
| Season or timing | Areas identified by NPS | What the listing tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Year-round | Hayden Valley and Lamar Valley | These valleys are named as year-round bison viewing areas. |
| Summer | Grasslands | NPS lists grassland areas as seasonal summer settings for bison viewing. |
| Winter | Hydrothermal areas and locations along the Madison River | These settings are listed for winter viewing. |
A listed area does not mean a sighting is certain at a particular pullout, on a particular day or at a particular hour. Treat the table as a guide to where the park directs attention during different seasons, not as a wildlife timetable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSeasonal wording should not be read as a promise that bison disappear from one habitat and appear in another on a fixed date. Weather, forage and animal movement vary. The handbook’s value is that it identifies broad settings associated with viewing at different times of year; it does not replace current road, weather or wildlife-condition information.
Bison safety is part of identifying them responsibly
The same NPS handbook warns that visitors are injured when they approach bison too closely. Bison may look calm while still being powerful, fast-moving wild animals. A photograph or close look is never a reason to reduce the space between a person and an animal.

Park conditions, closures and wildlife-viewing rules can change. Check the current National Park Service guidance before visiting and follow posted instructions, ranger directions and area restrictions. The cited handbook passage does not provide a single minimum distance to repeat here, so do not rely on an unsourced number copied from an older article. The practical rule is to remain well away and let the animal’s behavior, the park’s instructions and the terrain determine how far back you need to be.
Responsible viewing also protects the quality of the observation. Staying back allows the bison to continue feeding or moving without being pressured, and it prevents a visitor’s attempt to get closer from creating a hazard for everyone nearby. Never treat a busy roadside gathering as permission to move toward an animal or cross into its path.
How to use the comparison on a wildlife trip
If your goal is to understand what you see rather than memorize one superlative, keep the categories separate:
- Use bison when the question is overall size among living Yellowstone land mammals.
- Use elk when the question is which large mammal is most abundant.
- Use moose when the question is the largest member of the deer family.
- Use “not established” when someone asks for the largest animal across all prehistoric time without providing a fossil comparison.
A folding pocket reference can make those distinctions easier in the field. Waterford Press publishes Yellowstone Wildlife: A Folding Pocket Guide to Familiar Animals of the Yellowstone Area by James Kavanagh. The publisher describes it as a pocket-sized guide covering more than 140 familiar and unique species. It is a reference aid, not evidence that changes the NPS size record.
The publisher listing verifies the guide’s existence and format, but it does not establish a current retail price, store inventory or affiliate eligibility. Anyone considering the guide should check the current seller listing for cost and availability. “Yellowstone wildlife field guide” is a natural search description, while the NPS remains the authority for the size, population and management facts summarized here.
Why the careful answer matters
Calling bison Yellowstone’s largest living land mammals is both strong and appropriately limited. It rests on a current NPS size statement, supported maximum weights and a clear definition of the comparison. Saying that bison were the largest animals ever to roam the region would be a broader geological claim than the cited material supports.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the largest living animal in Yellowstone?
The American bison is Yellowstone’s largest living land mammal. NPS identifies bison as the largest land-dwelling mammal in North America and reports Yellowstone males weighing up to 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms).
Are elk or moose larger than bison?
Neither description replaces bison as the overall size answer. Elk are Yellowstone’s most abundant large mammal, while moose are the largest members of the deer family. Those are different comparisons from total body size among living land mammals.
How much can a Yellowstone bison weigh?
The NPS 2026 handbook reports males up to 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms) and females up to 1,100 pounds (500 kilograms). These are maximum reported weights, not averages or weights that can be determined reliably by looking at an individual.
