The largest aquariums in the United States depend on how “largest” is measured. This guide uses total water volume across the entire facility, not the capacity of one show tank, building size, attendance or a subjective quality rating. A July 16, 2025 third-party ranking places Georgia Aquarium first at 10 million gallons, followed by Shedd Aquarium at 5 million gallons and Monterey Bay Aquarium at 2.3 million gallons. Because several facilities publish figures on different schedules and scopes, treat the order as a dated comparison rather than a current, independently audited league table.
There is already a documented discrepancy: Georgia Aquarium’s current official About page says it contains more than 11 million gallons, while the 2025 ranking reports 10 million. The entries below preserve the ranking source’s numbers, identify the source and date, and separate whole-facility capacity from individual exhibit statistics.

How this list defines the largest aquariums
“Largest” can describe several different things. An aquarium may have the biggest single tank, the greatest total water capacity, the largest footprint, the most visitors or the most species. Those measurements produce different lists. Here, the ranking measure is stated total water volume across the facility. That is the only figure used to order the ten entries.
The sequence and gallon figures come from a USA Top 10 article published July 16, 2025. They are reported values, not a fresh audit of every aquarium’s current engineering records. Official pages reviewed for individual facilities sometimes use a different scope—for example, one named exhibit rather than the whole campus—or publish a newer total that does not match the secondary list. Those distinctions are called out rather than blended together.

The 10 largest U.S. aquariums by reported total water volume
| Rank | Aquarium | City and state | Total volume reported by the July 16, 2025 ranking | Scope or verification note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Georgia Aquarium | Atlanta, Georgia | 10 million gallons | Georgia Aquarium’s current About page instead says more than 11 million gallons for the facility. |
| 2 | Shedd Aquarium | Chicago, Illinois | 5 million gallons | Whole-facility figure reported by the ranking source; a current official total was not verified here. |
| 3 | Monterey Bay Aquarium | Monterey, California | 2.3 million gallons | The official Open Sea exhibit alone is 1.2 million gallons, which is not the aquarium-wide total. |
| 4 | National Aquarium | Baltimore, Maryland | 2.2 million gallons | Whole-facility figure reported by the ranking source; a current official total was not verified here. |
| 5 | Texas State Aquarium | Corpus Christi, Texas | 1.8 million gallons | Whole-facility figure reported by the ranking source; a current official total was not verified here. |
| 6 | Aquarium of the Pacific | Long Beach, California | 1.5 million gallons | Official materials describe major exhibits of about 5,000 to 350,000 gallons and more than 100 exhibits. |
| 7 | SEA LIFE Orlando | Orlando, Florida | 1.4 million gallons | Whole-facility figure reported by the ranking source; a current official total was not verified here. |
| 8 | Tennessee Aquarium | Chattanooga, Tennessee | 1.1 million gallons | The official Secret Reef page identifies a 618,000-gallon tank, the aquarium’s largest tank; that is an exhibit figure. |
| 9 | Adventure Aquarium | Camden, New Jersey | 850,000 gallons | Whole-facility figure reported by the ranking source; a current official total was not verified here. |
| 10 | Newport Aquarium | Newport, Kentucky | 750,000 gallons | Whole-facility figure reported by the ranking source; a current official total was not verified here. |
The table is best read as a source-dated snapshot. “Not verified here” does not mean an aquarium lacks an official figure; it means a comparable, current whole-facility number was not established for this comparison.
What each aquarium’s ranking means
1. Georgia Aquarium — Atlanta, Georgia
The 2025 ranking puts Georgia Aquarium at the top with 10 million gallons. Its own current About page gives a different, newer-sounding description: more than 11 million gallons of water. Georgia Aquarium describes itself as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Atlanta. Because the two figures have different provenance and the official page is not dated in the supplied material, the careful conclusion is that Georgia is clearly among the nation’s largest, while the exact current total should be checked directly with the aquarium.
For trip planning, Atlanta is the practical choice for visitors who want the highest-ranked facility in the list. Do not interpret the 10-million-gallon ranking number as the capacity of one tank; it is intended to represent the facility as a whole.

2. Shedd Aquarium — Chicago, Illinois
Shedd Aquarium ranks second in the dated list at 5 million gallons, less than half the ranking source’s figure for Georgia but well ahead of every entry below it. The supplied comparison does not establish a current official whole-facility total or a single exhibit capacity for Shedd on the same basis. That makes its placement useful for scale, but not a substitute for a current institutional specification.
Chicago visitors should therefore use the 5-million-gallon value as the ranking source’s reported total and confirm any updated capacity information on Shedd’s own visitor or institutional pages before using it for a formal comparison.

3. Monterey Bay Aquarium — Monterey, California
Monterey Bay Aquarium appears third with a reported 2.3 million gallons. Its official facts and figures identify the Open Sea exhibit as 1.2 million gallons. That single exhibit contains more than half of the ranking list’s reported facility total, illustrating why tank-size lists can look very different from whole-aquarium rankings.
The Open Sea number is an exhibit statistic, not a replacement for the 2.3-million-gallon facility figure. Visitors choosing Monterey are selecting a coastal California institution whose scale is concentrated in a particularly large named habitat, but the ranking still rests on all of the aquarium’s water systems combined.

The National Aquarium is fourth in the July 2025 sequence at 2.2 million gallons. The difference between it and Monterey Bay Aquarium is only 100,000 gallons in that source, so small changes in definitions, renovations or reporting dates could affect their relative positions. No comparable current official whole-facility figure was verified for this article.
Use the Baltimore entry as a reported position, not a precision claim that the two facilities are permanently separated by exactly 100,000 gallons. If capacity is central to your decision, check the National Aquarium’s current institutional information for the date and scope of any published number.
5. Texas State Aquarium — Corpus Christi, Texas
Texas State Aquarium ranks fifth with 1.8 million gallons in the 2025 list. That places it below the two roughly 2-million-gallon entries and above the 1.5-million-gallon Aquarium of the Pacific. The supplied sources do not provide a current official total or a verified largest-tank figure on the same basis.

Its Corpus Christi location makes it the Gulf Coast option among the top five. The ranking number should be treated as the source’s whole-facility estimate, with any current exhibit or capacity details confirmed through the aquarium before publication of a time-sensitive itinerary.
6. Aquarium of the Pacific — Long Beach, California
Aquarium of the Pacific is listed at 1.5 million gallons. Its official fact sheet describes major exhibits ranging from about 5,000 to 350,000 gallons, while its About page says the institution has more than 100 exhibits and approximately 1.6 million annual visitors. Those figures describe different dimensions of the facility: individual exhibit capacities, exhibit count and attendance, not the ranking measure itself.
The 350,000-gallon upper end is therefore not a contradiction of the 1.5-million-gallon total. Several large exhibits can add up to a much larger campus-wide water volume. Long Beach travelers who value variety and a large number of exhibits may find these institutional statistics more informative than the rank alone.
7. SEA LIFE Orlando — Orlando, Florida
SEA LIFE Orlando ranks seventh with 1.4 million gallons in the dated comparison. The supplied material does not verify a current official total, a largest tank or an exhibit-specific capacity for this facility. Its position should consequently be read as a reported whole-facility figure from the July 2025 list.
Orlando’s heavy concentration of attractions makes location and itinerary fit especially important. Confirm current opening arrangements, timed-entry requirements and any updated facility information on the aquarium’s official visitor page; those details can change independently of water volume.

8. Tennessee Aquarium — Chattanooga, Tennessee
The Tennessee Aquarium appears eighth at 1.1 million gallons. Its official Secret Reef exhibit page identifies a 618,000-gallon tank as the aquarium’s largest tank. That tank alone represents more than half of the ranking source’s reported facility total, but it is still not the same measurement as the 1.1-million-gallon campus figure.
This is a useful example of why readers should ask, “Largest by what?” A list ordered by single-tank capacity could place Tennessee Aquarium much higher than a list ordered by all water on site. For Chattanooga planning, the Secret Reef statistic is a concrete exhibit detail; the rank is a broader facility-scale comparison.
9. Adventure Aquarium — Camden, New Jersey
Adventure Aquarium is ninth in the 2025 ranking at 850,000 gallons. The supplied sources do not establish a current official whole-facility total or a comparable largest-exhibit statistic. The reported value places it below the million-gallon Tennessee entry and above Newport Aquarium’s 750,000 gallons.
Because the gap between the last two entries is only 100,000 gallons, their order is particularly sensitive to future renovations or revised accounting. Treat both numbers as dated source values rather than permanent records.

Newport Aquarium completes the list at a reported 750,000 gallons. No current official total or exhibit capacity was verified in the supplied material. Its tenth-place status means it is the smallest of these ten by the ranking source’s stated total volume, not that it is small by ordinary visitor standards or that another aquarium outside the list cannot have a larger single tank.

Why official and ranking numbers can disagree
Water-volume figures are easy to misread because institutions may count different systems. A facility total can include public display tanks, life-support systems, quarantine areas or other water held on site, while a public fact sheet may highlight only visitor-facing exhibits. A third-party writer may also rely on an older figure, round a number or combine information from different publication dates.
Georgia Aquarium demonstrates the issue most clearly: the ranking article reports 10 million gallons, while the current official About page says more than 11 million. The appropriate practice is to preserve attribution and scope, not average the values or silently replace one with the other. The same caution applies to Monterey Bay Aquarium’s 1.2-million-gallon Open Sea exhibit and Tennessee Aquarium’s 618,000-gallon Secret Reef tank: both are real, useful measurements, but neither is a whole-facility total.
How to choose among the ten for a trip
Total volume answers a scale question, not a complete travel question. Use the following filters after identifying the facilities that are geographically realistic for you:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Choose by region: Atlanta and Chattanooga serve the Southeast; Chicago and Baltimore cover the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic; Monterey and Long Beach provide two California options; Corpus Christi is the Texas Gulf Coast choice; Orlando, Camden and Newport cover major visitor corridors in Florida, New Jersey and northern Kentucky.
- Choose by the type of statistic you care about: Monterey Bay’s 1.2-million-gallon Open Sea exhibit and Tennessee Aquarium’s 618,000-gallon Secret Reef are named-tank measurements, while the ranking itself uses total facility water.
- Choose by breadth: Aquarium of the Pacific officially reports more than 100 exhibits, a useful signal for visitors who prefer many separate habitats rather than one exceptionally large tank.
- Choose by visit scale: Aquarium of the Pacific reports approximately 1.6 million annual visitors. That is an attendance figure, not a capacity ranking, but it can help explain why crowd planning matters at a prominent facility.
Do not infer ticket cost, opening hours, timed-entry rules or accessibility conditions from this ranking. Those are volatile visitor-policy details and should be checked on each aquarium’s official site for your travel date.
How to use this ranking responsibly
- Start with the measurement. Confirm that a claim refers to total facility water, not the largest individual tank.
- Record the source date. The order here comes from July 16, 2025, so later expansions, renovations or corrected figures may change it.
- Read the scope beside every number. Mark figures as whole facility, named exhibit, attendance or exhibit count.
- Check the aquarium’s current page. This is essential when the institution publishes a newer number, as Georgia Aquarium does.
- Plan around practical constraints. Verify tickets, hours, reservations, parking, accessibility and exhibit closures directly before traveling.
Used this way, the list is a starting point for comparing scale across the United States rather than a claim that every gallon has been measured under one standardized audit. Georgia Aquarium is the clear leader in the dated comparison, but its own current statement shows why readers should attach a date and source to every “largest aquarium” statistic.
