The largest well-documented living black mamba measurement located in published accounts is a 3.8-metre (12-foot 6-inch) female measured at Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, in November 1983. A 2002 Herpetological Bulletin account records the animal’s measurements in detail. Larger figures—about 4.3 metres and 4.5 metres—are reported in historical accounts and modern summaries, but the available evidence does not document them as equivalent, directly measured live specimens.
The strongest documented record: a 3.8-metre female
The Umhlanga snake is the most concrete record in the published material available for this question. It was a female black mamba found near a residential area in November 1983. The animal was described as gravid, meaning it was carrying eggs, and was measured rather than assigned a rounded estimate after the fact.

The account published in the Herpetological Bulletin in 2002 gives three separate measurements:

Why this measurement is more reliable than many larger claims
Snake length is surprisingly easy to overstate. A live snake bends, contracts and resists handling, while a preserved skin can be pulled straight after death. The bulletin account warns that many famous black-mamba figures came from stretched skins or may have been exaggerated.
In that account, the author estimates that a skin may measure about 20 percent longer than the living snake. That is an estimate for interpreting the examples discussed, not a universal conversion formula for every specimen. A skin measuring 3,990 mm was therefore considered likely to represent a living snake nearer 3,220 mm. The difference illustrates why a longer number is not automatically evidence of a larger living animal.

- Total length versus snout-to-vent length: a report may omit the tail or fail to say which convention it used.
- Direct measurement versus recollection: a named specimen measured at the time is stronger evidence than a story repeated decades later.
- Live animal versus skin: stretching can add substantial apparent length.
- Exact documentation versus rounded wording: “over four metres” does not reveal whether the original figure was 4.01 m or an inflated approximation.
- Independent evidence: several websites repeating one historical number do not create several independent measurements.
What the 4.3-metre and 4.5-metre figures represent
Longer black-mamba figures are not imaginary in the sense that nobody has ever written them down. They are simply less secure as record evidence than the Umhlanga measurement.

Because these sources use different standards, it is inaccurate to present 4.5 m as a universally verified world record. It is also too strong to claim that no black mamba has ever exceeded the documented 3.8 m. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the largest well-documented live measurement located is 3.8 m, while larger sizes remain reports or summary figures whose underlying evidence is not equivalent.
How large black mambas usually are
Record-sized animals should not be mistaken for the normal size of the species. Animal Diversity Web gives a general adult length of about 2.0–3.0 m. That range explains why an animal approaching four metres attracts attention: it is far beyond the usual adult dimensions described in general species accounts.
Published summaries are not perfectly consistent because they may combine field observations, museum material, historical reports and secondary references. The African Snakebite Institute’s materials themselves illustrate that difference: its web page gives a 4.5 m maximum, while its 2022 booklet lists 3.8 m and separately acknowledges older reports above four metres. These are different summaries of the available record, not evidence that the species has two officially accepted maximums.
A few other measurements mentioned in the bulletin help put the debate in context. The account refers to a 3,250 mm snake caught in Kenya and a 2,990 mm female in the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe collection. It also notes that some of the largest museum holdings were represented only by heads, which prevents a complete-body length comparison. A head in a collection can confirm identity, but it cannot establish a total length unless associated body measurements were preserved and documented.

How scientists and keepers should measure a mamba
A credible size record needs more than a number. The following procedure shows what should be recorded when a live snake can be measured safely by qualified personnel:
- Identify the animal and circumstances. Record the species, sex if known, location, date and whether the snake is alive, freshly dead, preserved or represented by a skin.
- Use a standardized length convention. State clearly whether the value is total length or snout-to-vent length. Do not compare the two as if they were interchangeable.
- Measure without stretching. A live snake should be allowed to settle in a safe, controlled setup. Pulling the body straight can produce an artificially high value and risks injury.
- Record multiple dimensions. Total length, snout-to-vent length and girth provide useful checks. The Umhlanga account’s inclusion of all three is one reason it is more informative than a single rounded figure.
- Document the specimen. Photographs, a scale reference, the measuring apparatus and an independent observer can preserve evidence that a later retelling may lose.
- Separate observation from inference. If the only available material is a skin, report the skin’s length as such. Any estimate of the former living length must be labeled an estimate.
These controls do not guarantee that every published number is correct, but they make competing claims comparable. They also prevent the common mistake of treating a stretched skin as a live snake.
Why the name “black mamba” is misleading
The species is not usually black-skinned. Animal Diversity Web describes typical coloration as olive, brownish, gray or khaki. The common name refers primarily to the dark interior of the mouth, which becomes visible when the snake displays a threat posture.

Behavior and what to do if one is encountered
The African Snakebite Institute characterizes black mambas as shy and elusive. They generally try to escape, but a snake that is cornered may strike repeatedly. The species is highly venomous, so size-record curiosity should never lead to an attempt to approach, capture or handle one.
- Keep a substantial distance and give the snake a clear route away.
- Move people and pets indoors or behind a solid barrier.
- Do not prod it, block its escape, or try to kill it.
- Contact qualified local wildlife or snake-rescue responders and follow their instructions.
- If a bite occurs, treat it as an emergency: keep the person as still as possible, call emergency services immediately and do not cut, suck, burn or apply a tourniquet to the wound.
A report made from a safe distance should describe the location, approximate appearance and direction of travel rather than attempting a close measurement. Only trained handlers with appropriate equipment should collect scientific measurements.
Could an even larger black mamba exist?
Yes, that possibility cannot be ruled out. The available material does not include a global, independently adjudicated register of every black mamba ever measured. Historical records may be incomplete, museum specimens may lack full bodies, and older reports may not preserve the original notes or photographs.
That uncertainty has two implications. First, “largest ever recorded” should be read as the largest reliable documented measurement currently identified, not proof that evolution or field observation could never produce a longer snake. Second, a new claim should not automatically displace the 3.8 m specimen. It would need comparable evidence: a named specimen, a direct and clearly defined measurement, date and location, and enough documentation for independent review.

A practical checklist for judging the next record claim
When a news story, video caption or social-media post announces a giant mamba, check these points before accepting the number:
- Is the animal identified as a black mamba rather than another large African snake?
- Does the report say whether the measurement is from a live snake, a carcass, a skin or an estimate?
- Is the figure total length or snout-to-vent length?
- Are the date, location, sex and measuring procedure stated?
- Can the original report be found, rather than only later pages repeating the same sentence?
- Does the source distinguish an observation from a historical anecdote?
- Has stretching, curvature or photographic perspective been addressed?
Until those questions have answers, the number belongs in the category of reported size, not verified record.
Bottom line
The best-supported answer is the 3.8-metre female measured at Umhlanga in 1983 and reported in the Herpetological Bulletin in 2002. Figures of 4.3 m and 4.5 m remain part of the black mamba’s published size lore, but the evidence available here does not establish them as directly measured live specimens of equal reliability.
