The UKC Olde English Bulldogge follows at 80 pounds. Continental Bulldogs are specified at 20–30 kilograms (about 44–66 pounds), while the Bulldog standard presented by the Bulldog Club of America gives approximate mature weights of 50 pounds for dogs and 40 pounds for bitches. The American Bulldog belongs in the comparison, but the AKC information reviewed here does not state a weight range, so it cannot be ranked fairly.
There is no universally accepted list of six “largest bulldog breeds.” Registries use different definitions, measurements and publication dates. The comparison below therefore uses the named standards and information linked in this article, ranks only comparable maximums, and identifies where a sixth position is not established rather than filling it with an unsupported guess.

The largest bulldog types with published size figures
“Largest” can mean several different things: the heaviest permitted adult, the tallest dog, the average dog in a population, or the heaviest individual ever recorded. Those are not interchangeable. Breed standards describe the desired size of an adult of that breed; they do not provide a population survey and do not prove which breed produces the heaviest typical pet.

On the figures that can actually be compared, the Alapaha has the largest documented upper limit. That is a statement about the cited standard, not a claim that every Alapaha is heavier than every Olde English Bulldogge or that it is the largest bulldog in the world.
Why a universal “top six” does not exist
“Bulldog” is a category, not one global registry list
Different kennel clubs and breed associations recognize different names and apply different standards. A breed may be established by one organization, described informally by another, or represented by a standard that gives only a minimum or an approximate target. Combining those documents into a single worldwide leaderboard creates false precision.
Standards measure different things
The Alapaha and Olde English Bulldogge standards provide sex-specific ranges. The Continental Bulldog’s weight depends on height. The Bulldog figure is approximate. Treating an approximate 50-pound target as if it were a hard maximum, or comparing an unspecified American Bulldog weight with a published maximum, would distort the order.
The missing sixth entry is a data problem, not a breed verdict
The available standards do not establish comparable upper limits for every plausible bulldog type. Adding a sixth breed from an informal list would mix evidence levels and could mislead readers about registration, geography or adult size. A six-place list can be made only after choosing a particular registry or region and checking a current standard for each selected breed.
1. Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog
Under the Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog Association standard, males weigh 70–90 pounds and stand 20–24 inches; females weigh 55–75 pounds and stand 18–22 inches. The 90-pound male ceiling is the highest explicit adult maximum in this comparison, which is why the breed occupies first place under this method.

How to read the range
A range describes the standard’s intended adult window, not a promise that an individual dog will reach its upper end. A 70-pound male and a 90-pound male can both fall within the same standard. The female range also overlaps the lower part of the male range, so sex and individual build matter when comparing two dogs.
What the height figures add
Weight alone cannot tell you how substantial a dog will look or how much space it will occupy. The association gives separate height ranges for males and females, allowing a reader to consider both mass and stature. Because those measurements come from the same standard, they are more useful together than a weight borrowed from one source and a height borrowed from another.

2. Olde English Bulldogge
The United Kennel Club standard gives dogs a weight range of 60–80 pounds and bitches 50–70 pounds. Height is 17–20 inches for dogs and 16–19 inches for bitches. Its maximum male weight is 10 pounds below the Alapaha maximum, placing it second in this standards-based comparison.
Balance is an explicit limit on size chasing
The UKC standard states: “Overall balance is never to be sacrificed in favor of size.” That sentence matters when interpreting the 80-pound upper limit. The number is part of a complete breed description, not an instruction to select the heaviest possible dog or to push an individual beyond a healthy condition.

Sex-specific overlap
The ranges overlap: a 60-pound dog is at the bottom of the male range, while a 70-pound bitch is at the top of the female range. Consequently, sex-based averages cannot be inferred from the endpoints alone. Use the stated range for the sex and registry standard that applies to the dog you are evaluating.

3. Continental Bulldog
The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) standard specifies 20–30 kilograms, approximately 44–66 pounds, depending on height. That upper figure places the Continental Bulldog below the Olde English Bulldogge and above the Bulldog’s approximate mature-bitch figure in this table, but the comparison is not perfectly like-for-like because the FCI ties weight to height rather than listing separate male and female ranges.
A current standard with a height-dependent rule
The FCI’s currently valid standard publication date is February 11, 2026. It calls the Continental Bulldog medium-sized and distinguishes it from the English Bulldog. Because the permitted weight changes with height, a reader should consult the full document rather than assume that every Continental Bulldog should weigh 30 kilograms.
Why the breed’s placement is provisional
The 66-pound figure is the top of the published 20–30-kilogram range, not an average. It also cannot be compared with a sex-specific maximum without noting the different measurement systems. The rank here is therefore a practical ordering of available upper limits, not an official FCI ranking of bulldog breeds.

4. Bulldog (the standard commonly called English Bulldog)
The Bulldog Club of America’s presentation of the AKC breed standard gives mature dogs an approximate weight of 50 pounds and mature bitches an approximate weight of 40 pounds. Those are target figures, not a stated range with a defined maximum, so the Bulldog cannot be ranked as precisely as the Alapaha or Olde English Bulldogge.
Approximate is not the same as maximum
If a standard says “about 50 pounds,” it does not establish that 50 pounds is a strict upper boundary or that a 52-pound dog automatically falls outside the standard. It signals the intended mature size. This is why the table labels the figure approximate and avoids inventing a high or low endpoint.
Use the full breed standard for conformation questions
Weight is only one element of a standard. When evaluating whether a particular Bulldog fits the intended type, read the entire document rather than using the approximate weight as a pass/fail test. The source used here is the Bulldog Club of America’s presentation of the AKC Bulldog standard.

The American Kennel Club describes the American Bulldog as athletic, strong, enduring and agile, with a history as a farm utility dog. Why an unsourced number would be misleading
Informal breed pages often repeat measurements without identifying a registry, edition or method. Substituting one of those figures here would make the table look complete while applying a lower evidence standard to one breed. The honest entry is “not stated,” followed by the link to the AKC page, until a current standard with comparable measurements is selected.
This does not mean American Bulldogs are smaller than the ranked breeds, nor does it establish that they are larger. It means the cited material does not answer that specific numerical question.
How to compare bulldog size without mixing incompatible numbers
- Define the category first. Decide which registry, country or breed association counts as authoritative for your comparison. Write that rule down before collecting numbers.
- Use the same measurement for every breed. Prefer adult weight ranges, and record whether each value is a maximum, an approximate target, a minimum or a height-dependent allowance.
- Keep sex visible. Do not combine a male maximum with a female maximum and call the result a single breed weight. Preserve the source’s dog/bitch or male/female labels.
- Record height separately. Height at the withers and body weight answer different questions. A taller dog is not automatically heavier, and a heavier dog is not automatically taller.
- Check the standard’s date. Standards can be revised. The FCI document used here is dated February 11, 2026; the UKC Olde English Bulldogge document cited here was revised April 2, 2018.
- Rank only comparable upper limits. If one source provides no maximum, mark the breed unranked rather than guessing. If one source gives a minimum, do not compare that minimum with another breed’s maximum.
- Separate standard limits from real-world individuals. A standard describes desired type. It does not establish average adult weight, growth rate or the heaviest individual dog in the population.
What “biggest” means for a real dog
Largest permitted adult
This is the question answered by the main table: which cited standard has the highest explicit upper weight? Under that rule, the Alapaha’s 90-pound male maximum leads.
Recommended Free Tools
Heaviest typical dog
The supplied standards do not provide population averages or distributions. You cannot derive a typical weight by averaging the endpoints, and you should not present the ranking as a survey of household dogs.
Tallest dog
Only the Alapaha and Olde English Bulldogge entries in this comparison provide usable height ranges. The Continental Bulldog’s weight is linked to height, while no comparable height figure is used for the Bulldog or American Bulldog here. A tallest-breed ranking would require a separate, consistently sourced height dataset.
Most substantial-looking build
Visual impression depends on proportions as well as scale. The UKC’s instruction not to sacrifice balance for size illustrates why a heavier number alone is not a complete description of breed type. Use the full standard when conformation, not just weight, is your concern.
A practical reading of the ranking
| If your question is… | The defensible answer from these standards is… |
|---|---|
| Which listed breed has the highest explicit male maximum? | Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog, 90 pounds. |
| Which listed breed has the next-highest bounded male range? | Olde English Bulldogge, up to 80 pounds. |
| Which figure is conditional on height? | Continental Bulldog, 20–30 kilograms. |
| Which breed has an approximate mature target rather than a range? | Bulldog, about 50 pounds for dogs and 40 pounds for bitches. |
| Which included breed lacks a comparable weight in the cited material? | American Bulldog. |
| Can these sources prove a universal sixth-place breed? | No. A registry- or geography-specific list must be defined and verified first. |
Questions to ask before treating a size number as a promise
- Is the number tied to a named registry or breed association?
- Does it describe males, females, both, or neither?
- Is it a range, an approximate figure, a minimum or a height-dependent rule?
- What publication or revision date applies?
- Are you comparing a standard measurement with an individual dog’s current scale reading?
- Does the source distinguish the breed from similarly named bulldog types?
These checks prevent the most common error in “largest bulldog” lists: presenting unrelated numbers as though they were one standardized contest.
Bottom line
Using the published standards cited here, the Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog has the highest documented adult upper limit, at 90 pounds for males. The Olde English Bulldogge reaches 80 pounds for dogs, the Continental Bulldog’s height-dependent range reaches about 66 pounds, and the Bulldog standard gives approximate mature weights of 50 pounds for dogs and 40 pounds for bitches. The American Bulldog cannot be ranked from the cited AKC passage because it supplies no comparable weight. A genuine “top six” requires a narrower registry or geographic definition and six current, comparable standards; without that rule, claiming a universal sixth-largest bulldog would be guesswork.
