Largest Centipedes in the World: Six Documented Giants and Why a Top 10 Is Elusive

Scolopendra gigantea is the leading candidate for the world’s largest living centipede, but published sizes range from 26 cm to about 30 cm. Here are the best-documented regional giants and the evidence limits behind any top-ten list.

Scolopendra gigantea is generally identified as the largest living centipede. Institutional accounts put it at about 30 cm (roughly 12 inches), while Guinness World Records lists 26 cm. That spread is not a contradiction so much as a reminder that centipede measurements come from different specimens and standards. A defensible, worldwide ranking of exactly ten species does not yet exist in the sources available: several regional champions are documented, but their maximum lengths are not measured on a common basis.

What is the largest centipede in the world?

Scolopendra gigantea, the giant centipede of northern South America and nearby Caribbean areas, is the strongest candidate. The Australian Museum (updated 12 October 2020) and a University of the West Indies guide describe individuals at about 30 cm. The Missouri Department of Conservation says the species can exceed 12 inches, whereas the current Guinness World Records entry gives 26 cm.

Those figures should be reported as approximate, source-specific values rather than a single settled world maximum. “About 30 cm” may refer to a stated potential size, while a record page may use a particular measured specimen. Without a shared protocol for straightening the animal, defining the head and terminal legs, and documenting the specimen, the numbers cannot be treated as a laboratory-style league table.

Why “the 10 largest” is harder than it sounds

Centipede length is often quoted in field guides, museum pages, pest-management sheets, or popular references, each with a different purpose. One source may give an average, another a maximum observed individual, and another a size that the species is said to reach. Some measurements include the outstretched terminal legs; others effectively describe body length. A regional superlative also does not establish a global rank.

The table below therefore presents the best-documented large or regionally exceptional species in the available institutional material. It is not a verified top-ten ranking. Four additional species cannot be responsibly inserted without species-specific measurements on the same basis; assigning them places would create precision that the evidence does not provide.

Documented giants and regional champions

Species Geographic claim Reported size or status What can safely be concluded
Scolopendra gigantea World’s leading candidate About 30 cm; Missouri says over 12 inches; Guinness lists 26 cm Best-supported contender for largest living centipede, with source variation
Scolopendra heros Largest in North America About 6½ inches average; nearly 8 inches possible Regional champion in University of Arkansas and Missouri references
Ethmostigmus rubripes Largest native Australian centipede 16 cm size range Australian Museum’s stated Australian superlative
Scolopendra cingulata Europe’s largest centipede No directly comparable maximum in the cited sources European superlative is documented, but not a numeric world ranking
Scolopendra subspinipes Large species across the Indo-Pacific Up to 8 inches Large by the U.S. Department of Defense factsheet’s description
Scolopendra hardwickei India; commonly called the giant tiger centipede No supported size figure in the cited publication Include for regional interest, not as a measured rank

Scolopendra gigantea: the giant of the group

This scolopendrid has the combination that drives its reputation: a very long, flattened body, numerous articulated legs, and enough strength to subdue substantial prey. The Missouri guide records frogs, lizards, mice, bats and birds among the prey reported for the species. That list describes what this predator can take; it does not mean every individual regularly hunts all of those animals.

The conflicting length figures are useful rather than embarrassing. The Australian Museum and University of the West Indies both use approximately 30 cm, Missouri says “exceed 12 inches,” and Guinness records 26 cm. Quote the source and its wording when accuracy matters, especially in a museum label, classroom project or identification note.

Scolopendra heros: North America’s largest

The giant redheaded centipede is the answer to “Which centipede is the largest in North America?” The University of Arkansas Arthropod Museum reports an average of about 6½ inches and says individuals may approach 8 inches. Missouri’s field guide also treats S. heros as North America’s largest centipede.

An average and a potential maximum answer different questions. Most adults will not be close to the upper figure, and an 8-inch report for this species cannot be directly compared with a 30-cm statement for S. gigantea unless the measurement methods and specimen records match.

Ethmostigmus rubripes: Australia’s native record-holder

The Australian Museum calls Ethmostigmus rubripes “the largest native Australian centipede and … a member of the scolopendrid family.” Its factsheet, updated in 2020, gives a size range of 16 cm. “Native Australian” is the important qualification: it is a national ecological superlative, not a claim that the species exceeds the world’s largest Scolopendra.

Scolopendra cingulata: Europe’s largest

A 2014 PLOS ONE study identifies Scolopendra cingulata as Europe’s largest centipede. The University of Texas at Austin DigiMorph page provides species context and separately discusses the much larger reported size of S. gigantea. The reviewed references do not provide a directly comparable maximum for S. cingulata, so Europe’s title should remain geographic rather than converted into a numbered global position.

Scolopendra subspinipes: a widely distributed large species

A U.S. Department of Defense Armed Forces Pest Management Board factsheet gives Scolopendra subspinipes a size of up to 8 inches: Scolopendra subspinipes factsheet. The species occurs across a broad Indo-Pacific range and is often encountered in pest-management contexts. “Up to 8 inches” is a stated upper size in that factsheet, not proof that it ranks fifth or sixth worldwide.

Scolopendra hardwickei: a named Indian giant without a comparable measurement

The Zoological Survey of India publication from March 2010 calls Scolopendra hardwickei the giant tiger centipede and describes it as the largest, and perhaps most dangerous, Indian centipede. The cited publication does not supply a size that can be compared with the centimetre and inch figures above. “Most dangerous” is not a standardized risk ranking, so it should not be repeated as an established measure of medical threat.

How giant centipedes are built

All of these animals are chilopods, the centipede class within the broader myriapods. Their bodies are flattened and divided into segments, with one pair of legs on each trunk segment. That arrangement distinguishes centipedes from millipedes, which generally have two pairs of legs on many body segments.

The first leg pair behind the head is transformed into venom-delivery structures called forcipules. They are not ordinary walking legs. A scolopendrid uses them to seize prey and inject venom, while the remaining legs provide traction and rapid movement. The combination of a flexible, low body and grasping forcipules lets a large species overpower prey that seems surprisingly big relative to its width.

Venom is a hunting adaptation, not evidence that every encounter with a person is medically severe. The University of the West Indies guide advises avoiding bites from larger species. Do not handle a wild centipede for a photograph or attempt to test its reactions; use distance, a container-and-card removal method, or professional pest assistance where appropriate.

What “size” should mean in a comparison?

Before treating two figures as comparable, check four details:

  • Measurement axis: Does the source mean body length, total length including terminal legs, or an extended posture?
  • Statistic: Is the number an average, a measured specimen, a stated range, or a potential maximum?
  • Geographic scope: “Largest in Australia,” “largest in Europe,” and “largest in North America” answer different questions from “largest in the world.”
  • Source and date: Museum and government pages may be updated, while undated field guides can preserve older wording or measurements.

Applying those checks explains why a 16-cm Australian range, an 8-inch North American maximum and a roughly 30-cm world candidate should be displayed with their qualifications instead of sorted into a false exact order.

What the regional records tell us

Geography is not a footnote in these comparisons. S. heros answers a North American question, while E. rubripes answers an Australian one. Their superlatives describe the largest documented animal within a defined fauna, not a contest against every scolopendrid on another continent. Likewise, calling S. cingulata Europe’s largest does not supply a missing length measurement or place it automatically behind S. subspinipes.

The records also show why common names can mislead. “Giant centipede,” “giant redheaded centipede” and “giant tiger centipede” are useful labels for readers, but they are not interchangeable taxonomic identities. A reliable comparison pairs each common name with its italicized scientific name and the region covered by the source.

Diet provides another scale clue without creating a ranking. Missouri’s account of S. gigantea includes frogs, lizards, mice, bats and birds, demonstrating that a large scolopendrid can take vertebrate prey. It does not establish that all giant centipedes have the same diet, nor that prey size predicts danger to people. The shared anatomical feature is the forcipule: a modified first leg pair used for venom delivery.

How to identify a very large centipede safely

  1. Keep your hands and bare feet away. Large scolopendrids can bite, and the venom-delivery appendages are close to the head.
  2. Record location and appearance from a distance. Country or state, body color, head color, banding and an approximate scale are more useful than trying to catch the animal.
  3. Do not identify by a common name alone. Names such as “giant tiger centipede” can refer to a particular species in one source; use the scientific name when making a comparison.
  4. Compare only with a source that covers your region. A North American record does not establish the identity of a South American specimen, and photographs can distort scale.
  5. Seek medical advice after a bite if symptoms are severe or persistent. Increasing pain, swelling, breathing difficulty, vomiting or signs of an allergic reaction warrant urgent professional care.

Why a true top-ten list needs more data

The six species above are not six consecutive places. The available references mix measured lengths, averages, ranges and regional labels, and they do not provide comparable maxima for ten taxa. A scientifically meaningful top-ten project would need specimen-level records, a declared measurement protocol, verified identifications and consistent treatment of sex, maturity and geographic variation.

It would also need to state whether “largest” means the longest preserved specimen, the longest live animal, an average adult, or a published potential maximum. A transparent table would record the source owner, publication or update date, locality, units and measurement method for every entry. Without those fields, converting a rounded field-guide phrase into a precise rank gives readers more confidence than the underlying evidence warrants.

Until that dataset exists, the most accurate answer is two-part: Scolopendra gigantea is the leading candidate for the largest living centipede, and several other species are impressive regional giants. Treating those claims as qualified natural-history facts is more informative than filling four unsupported ranking slots.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the largest centipede in the world?

Scolopendra gigantea is generally identified as the leading candidate. The Australian Museum and University of the West Indies describe it at about 30 cm, while Guinness World Records lists 26 cm, so no single exact maximum should be presented as settled.

How big can a giant centipede get?

For S. gigantea, published descriptions range from 26 cm to about 30 cm, and the Missouri Department of Conservation says it can exceed 12 inches. These are source-specific figures rather than measurements from one harmonized dataset.

Which centipede is the largest in North America?

Scolopendra heros, the giant redheaded centipede, is described as North America’s largest. The University of Arkansas Arthropod Museum reports an average of about 6½ inches and says individuals may approach 8 inches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is Australia’s largest native centipede?

The Australian Museum identifies Ethmostigmus rubripes as the largest native Australian centipede and gives a size range of 16 cm. That is an Australian geographic superlative, not a claim of global dominance.

Are the biggest centipedes dangerous to people?

Large scolopendrids have venom-delivery forcipules, and the University of the West Indies advises avoiding bites. Do not handle wild specimens. A source-supported comparison of medical danger is not established, so labels such as “deadliest” should be avoided.

Why is there no reliable list of the ten largest species?

The cited sources mix averages, stated ranges, potential maxima and individual record measurements. They also use different geographic scopes and may measure body length or extended total length. A valid top ten would require verified species identifications and one declared measurement protocol for every specimen.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Scolopendra gigantea remains the best-supported candidate for the largest living centipede, with published figures of about 30 cm and 26 cm. S. heros, E. rubripes, S. cingulata, S. subspinipes and S. hardwickei are documented regional or notably large species, but the evidence does not justify assigning them exact places in a global top ten.
