The largest figure in the current U.S. Geological Survey species profile for the cottonmouth is 1,892 millimeters (189.2 centimeters, about 74.5 inches) in total length. The profile cites Gloyd and Conant (1990) and Conant and Collins (1998). A separate historical account describes an eastern cottonmouth from the Dismal Swamp region measuring 188 centimeters (74 inches). Those numbers are close, but they are not the same claim: one is a species-level maximum in a USGS profile, while the other is a retelling of an older account tied specifically to an eastern cottonmouth.
Neither source establishes an officially certified Guinness World Records measurement or a modern, independently remeasured specimen. The safest answer is therefore precise rather than absolute: 1,892 mm is the largest size listed in the USGS profile, and 188 cm is the notable Dismal Swamp historical measurement.

The largest reported cottonmouth, at a glance
Cottonmouth is the common name for Agkistrodon piscivorus, a venomous pit viper. In the USGS species profile accessed in 2026, the maximum total length is given as 1,892 mm. Converting that figure produces 189.2 cm, or approximately 74.5 inches. “Total length” means the measurement includes the snake’s tail.

It concerns an eastern cottonmouth associated with the Dismal Swamp region. The account says the snake was captured, later died, and was measured straight and relaxed. That description comes through a secondary Fort Worth Area Snakes guide on iNaturalist reproducing the older account, rather than from a direct examination of the original publication or specimen record here.

The difference is 1.2 cm (12 mm), or roughly half an inch. It is small enough that rounding, measuring technique, and the condition of the specimen could matter, but it does not justify merging the two reports into one undifferentiated “record.”
How the two maximum-size claims differ
| Claim | Length | Taxonomic scope | Measurement basis | Source and verification status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USGS species-profile maximum | 1,892 mm (189.2 cm; about 74.5 in) | Cottonmouth species profile | Total length, including the tail | U.S. Geological Survey profile, accessed 2026; profile cites Gloyd and Conant (1990) and Conant and Collins (1998). The underlying specimen documentation was not independently inspected. |
| Dismal Swamp historical account | 188 cm (74 in) | Eastern cottonmouth | Reportedly measured straight and relaxed after capture; total-length basis is presented with the account | Older account attributed to Gloyd and Conant (1990), reproduced in a secondary iNaturalist guide. The original publication and specimen record were not directly examined. |
This table explains why both measurements can appear in careful coverage. They use nearly identical units and describe unusually large cottonmouths, yet their scopes and documentation paths differ. The USGS number is the larger value and is presented as the profile’s species-level maximum. The Dismal Swamp number is a location-linked historical report concerning an eastern cottonmouth.
What “total length” means
Snake-length comparisons are only meaningful when the same measurement convention is used. Total length runs from the tip of the snout to the end of the tail. It is not the body length with the tail omitted, and it is not a straight-line distance taken while the animal is loosely coiled.

Why the tail matters
Leaving the tail out can make a specimen seem shorter than a published total-length figure. Conversely, comparing a total length with a body-only measurement creates an apparent difference that is purely methodological. When reading a record claim, first check whether the number is total length; the USGS maximum is reported on that basis.

Straight and relaxed measurements
The Dismal Swamp account specifically says the specimen was measured straight and relaxed. That wording signals an attempt to avoid adding bends in the body or stretching a living snake. It also indicates that the account concerns a specimen after capture and death, not a tape measurement taken from a moving animal in the field.
Unit conversions
- 1,892 mm equals 189.2 cm.
- 189.2 cm is approximately 74.5 inches.
- 188 cm equals 74 inches when rounded to the nearest inch.
- The reported values differ by 12 mm, or 1.2 cm.
Rounding should remain visible. Calling both snakes “about 74 inches” can be useful for a quick sense of scale, but it hides the fact that the USGS profile lists a 189.2 cm maximum while the historical account lists 188 cm.
What a cottonmouth is
Agkistrodon piscivorus is a venomous pit viper. The USGS profile describes a heat-sensing pit between each nostril and eye, a defining feature of pit vipers. It also notes that appearance varies, so photographs or color impressions alone are not a reliable way to judge whether an animal matches a particular record description.
The common name refers to a defensive visual display. The National Park Service explains: “The name cottonmouth comes from the white mouth the snake displays when it feels threatened.” The statement describes the origin of the name, not a recommendation to provoke a snake into opening its mouth. A threatened cottonmouth should be given space rather than approached for identification or photography.

How to evaluate a claimed record
A large-snake claim becomes more useful when its evidence is separated into four questions. These are the same comparison axes that distinguish the USGS and Dismal Swamp figures.
1. What is the taxonomic scope?
Ask whether the number applies to cottonmouths as a species or to a named regional form such as the eastern cottonmouth. The USGS figure is presented in a species profile. The Dismal Swamp account is specifically attributed to an eastern cottonmouth. A regional claim should not automatically be promoted to a species-wide record without confirming how the source defines the animal.
2. What was measured?
Confirm that the number is total length and includes the tail. Then look for the posture and condition of the snake during measurement. “Straight and relaxed” is more informative than a photograph of a coiled animal, because a coil does not reveal the snake’s full length.

3. Where did the number come from?
An official species profile, a peer-reviewed or specialist reference, a museum catalogue, a newspaper report, and a social-media post do not provide the same level of documentation. The USGS profile is the strongest current source in this set for the published maximum. The Dismal Swamp figure survives here through a secondary guide that reproduces an older citation.

4. Can the original record be checked?
The historical specimen documentation behind the Dismal Swamp account was not directly inspected, so the account should be described as historical and reported, not as independently remeasured or newly certified. The USGS profile also should not be turned into a claim that a living snake was recently weighed, photographed, or verified under a modern record protocol; the profile supplies a length and its cited references, not those additional details.
Why the 1892 mm figure is the practical answer
If a reader asks for the largest cottonmouth ever recorded and wants one number, 1,892 mm (189.2 cm, about 74.5 inches) is the clearest answer supported by the USGS species profile. It is the profile’s stated maximum and is larger than the 188 cm Dismal Swamp report.
That wording still needs a qualification. “Maximum in a species profile” is not identical to “official world record.” The available material does not establish a Guinness certification, a universal record-keeping body, or direct modern remeasurement of the original animals. Presenting 1,892 mm as the USGS-listed maximum preserves what the source actually says without adding an unsupported superlative.
How the historical Dismal Swamp account should be read
The Dismal Swamp report is valuable because it gives a concrete locality, a species-level description within the cottonmouth group, and a measurement procedure: the animal was captured, later died, and was measured straight and relaxed. Those details are more informative than an unattributed statement that someone saw a “seven-foot cottonmouth.”

At the same time, the route by which the figure is available matters. The number is reproduced in a secondary iNaturalist guide and attributed to Gloyd and Conant (1990). The original publication and specimen record were not opened for direct checking here. That limitation does not prove the account false; it means the claim should retain its historical attribution and should not be rewritten as a recently verified record.
What readers should not infer from the measurements
- The two numbers do not prove that every exceptionally large cottonmouth reaches 189 cm.
- A sighting estimate from a coiled or moving snake is not interchangeable with a straight, relaxed total-length measurement.
- The figures do not establish an official Guinness World Records title.
- The Dismal Swamp account does not, by itself, replace the USGS profile’s species-level maximum.
- A photograph that shows a white mouth or variable coloration does not validate a length claim.
These boundaries are important because record-sized wildlife reports are often repeated after the original context has disappeared. Keeping the number, taxonomic scope, measurement basis, provenance, and verification status together prevents a cautious source from becoming an overstated headline.
Safety when encountering a suspected cottonmouth
The USGS profile identifies the cottonmouth as a venomous pit viper. Do not approach, corner, handle, restrain, or attempt to straighten one to check its size. Trying to measure a wild snake creates risk for the person and additional stress for the animal, while the resulting number would not necessarily meet the straight-and-relaxed standard used in the historical account.

References for readers who want the source trail
The USGS species profile is the primary source for the 1,892 mm maximum presented here and cites Gloyd and Conant (1990) and Conant and Collins (1998). The historical 188 cm Dismal Swamp figure is attributed to Gloyd and Conant (1990) as reproduced in the iNaturalist Fort Worth Area Snakes guide. The National Park Service’s cottonmouth article supplies the explanation of the white-mouth name.
For deeper natural-history reading, the USGS profile points to Snakes of the Agkistrodon Complex: A Monographic Review. Edition, marketplace availability, and current listings are not established here, so readers should verify those details independently before seeking a copy.
The evidence-based takeaway
The largest published figure in the USGS cottonmouth profile is 1,892 mm (189.2 cm, approximately 74.5 inches) total length. A separate historical account records an eastern cottonmouth from the Dismal Swamp region at 188 cm (74 inches), measured straight and relaxed after capture. Because the claims differ in scope and provenance, the most accurate description is not a single certified world record but two closely related, clearly attributed maximum-size reports.
