The strongest documented answer is a cougar reported at 227 pounds, killed by Theodore Roosevelt near Meeker, Colorado, on February 14, 1901. The Boone and Crockett Club identifies it as the largest cougar of Roosevelt’s expedition and says the animal held the Club’s world record until a Utah hunter surpassed it in 1964.
There is an important qualification: the account describes a cougar killed during a hunt, not one captured alive. “Caught” is therefore a reasonable shorthand only if you mean hunted and taken. The evidence does not establish a universally verified maximum for every cougar ever trapped, restrained, or weighed alive.

The documented answer in one view
The historical record most often associated with the largest cougar is Roosevelt’s final-day animal from his 1901 Colorado expedition. The Boone and Crockett Club’s account gives a reported body weight of 227 pounds and places the hunt near Meeker, in the White River country. It also records a trophy score of 15-12/16 Boone and Crockett points.
| Record detail | What the historical account says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Reported body weight | 227 pounds | A weight reported in the Boone and Crockett Club’s narrative of Roosevelt’s hunt; it is not presented as a modern, standardized global live-capture measurement. |
| Animal and date | Roosevelt’s last-day cougar, February 14, 1901 | The event date is historical, not the publication date of the Club’s article. |
| Location | Near Meeker, Colorado, in the White River area | The account describes the expedition’s hunting grounds between Coyote Basin and Colorow Mountain. |
| Trophy score | 15-12/16 B&C points | A measurement of trophy characteristics, not a second way of stating the cougar’s weight. |
| Record chronology | Held the Club’s world record until 1964 | The Club says a hunter in Utah then surpassed it. |
Those details answer a historical hunting question, but they do not create a complete ranking of all cougars ever captured. No standardized worldwide database of live-capture weights is established by the available record.

What happened on the 1901 hunt?
Roosevelt’s expedition in Colorado
The Boone and Crockett Club recounts Theodore Roosevelt traveling to Colorado’s White River region for a cougar hunt in 1901. He hunted with hounds and kept track of the animals taken during the expedition. The setting described by the Club lies between Coyote Basin and Colorow Mountain, near the community of Meeker.
The date attached to the largest reported animal is February 14, 1901, the final day of the expedition. The dogs treed the cougar, allowing Roosevelt and the hunting party to reach it. The account says the animal was weighed and measured as part of the hunt’s record keeping.
The reported 227-pound measurement
The figure of 227 pounds comes from the Boone and Crockett Club’s historical account of Roosevelt’s expedition. It is best written as “reported at 227 pounds,” because the source is a historical organizational narrative rather than a modern study using a published, universal weighing protocol.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That wording matters. A historical field weight can depend on when the animal was weighed, whether it had been field dressed, how the scale was calibrated, and how the report was preserved. The available account does not provide a contemporary protocol that would let readers compare this measurement directly with every later claim. It supports the specific historical statement, not an absolute scientific claim that no cougar could ever have exceeded 227 pounds.
“Largest” can mean weight or trophy score
Two numbers appear in discussions of Roosevelt’s cougar, and they describe different things. The 227-pound figure is a reported body weight. The 15-12/16 Boone and Crockett score is a trophy measurement. Treating the points as pounds would produce a basic category error.

Body weight
Body weight is the direct answer to a reader asking how heavy the cougar was: the animal in the Roosevelt account was reported at 227 pounds. The account calls it the largest cougar of his expedition. It does not establish a current, all-species, all-countries leaderboard of live animals.
Trophy score
A Boone and Crockett score records selected trophy characteristics according to the Club’s scoring system. It is not a scale reading and cannot be converted into pounds. Roosevelt’s trophy scored 15-12/16 points. The Club says that trophy remained in its all-time top 20 at number 15 and was tied for second in Colorado, even though another animal later surpassed the Club’s world-record position.
The score is useful for understanding how hunting records are categorized, but it answers a different question from “How heavy was the cougar?” A high trophy score does not prove that an animal was heavier than every other cougar, and a heavy animal does not automatically have the highest score.
How the record changed after 1901
Roosevelt’s place in the chronology
According to the Boone and Crockett Club, Roosevelt’s 227-pound cougar remained the Club’s world record after the 1901 hunt. The Club’s account presents the animal as the largest cougar of Roosevelt’s expedition and preserves both its weight and trophy score.
The 1964 Utah record change
The same account says a hunter in Utah surpassed Roosevelt’s record in 1964. That statement establishes a change in the Club’s record chronology, but it does not supply a second, directly comparable live-capture measurement in the material available here. It also does not turn the 227-pound figure into a universally verified maximum for all cougars.

When citing the historical sequence, keep the claims narrow: Roosevelt’s cougar was reported at 227 pounds; the Club treated it as a world record in its system; and a Utah hunter surpassed that record in 1964. Avoid adding an exact replacement weight unless a source provides one.
“Caught” versus “killed”: the key qualification
In ordinary conversation, people may use “caught” for an animal hunted, trapped, or otherwise taken. In this case, the source describes a cougar killed during a hound hunt. It does not describe a live capture, a restraint-and-release operation, or a veterinary weighing of a living animal.
That distinction changes what can safely be claimed:
- Supported: the largest cougar reported in Roosevelt’s expedition weighed 227 pounds, according to the Boone and Crockett Club’s historical account.
- Supported: the animal was killed near Meeker, Colorado, on February 14, 1901.
- Supported: the Club says it held the organization’s world record until a Utah hunter surpassed it in 1964.
- Not established: that 227 pounds is the largest verified weight of every cougar ever captured alive.
- Not established: that the trophy score of 15-12/16 points is a body-weight ranking.
Using the qualification near the top of an article prevents a historical hunting record from being mistaken for a modern wildlife-capture record.
Cougar, mountain lion and puma are the same species
Terminology can make searches for records look more fragmented than they are. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish uses cougar, mountain lion and puma for the species Puma concolor. A source that says “mountain lion” is not automatically describing a different animal from one that says “cougar.”

Roosevelt’s account uses the period’s hunting language, while wildlife agencies commonly use all three names. For a record search, check the scientific name and the measurement method rather than assuming that different common names represent separate categories.
What the original descriptions add
Roosevelt’s reaction
The Boone and Crockett Club attributes this sentence to Roosevelt in its account of the hunt: “It would be impossible to wish a better ending to a hunt.” The quotation conveys his view of the expedition’s conclusion; it is not a modern assessment of the cougar’s biological size.
Dr. Merriam’s description of the skull
The Club also attributes a letter to Dr. Merriam that said, “The big [cougar] skull is certainly a giant.” Merriam compared the skull with specimens from British Columbia and Wyoming, according to the Club’s account. The bracketed word is an editorial insertion in the quoted source. Merriam’s remark is historical testimony about the skull, not a contemporary scientific ranking of all cougar skulls.
These quotations help explain why the animal became prominent in hunting records, but neither replaces the weight measurement nor supplies a standardized comparison with every cougar documented elsewhere.

How to evaluate another “largest cougar” claim
Reports of unusually large cougars can be difficult to compare. Before accepting a new claim as a record, check each of the following details:

- Is Your Dog a Picky Eater? We stick to simple formulas rich in natural flavors, that could tempt a fussy eater. No hassle with pills, powder, tablets or capsules.
- Identify the measurement. Is the number a live weight, a field weight, a dressed weight, a photograph-based estimate, or a trophy score?
- Confirm the animal’s status. Was it killed, captured alive, immobilized for research, or merely observed?
- Check the date and place. A record may belong to a particular organization, state, province, or historical period rather than to a universal registry.
- Look for a weighing method. A credible comparison should say how and when the animal was weighed and whether the measurement was repeated.
- Separate species names from categories. Cougar, mountain lion and puma all refer to Puma concolor in the New Mexico wildlife agency’s terminology.
- Read the record keeper’s rules. A trophy organization’s score and a wildlife biologist’s body-mass measurement are not interchangeable systems.
- Keep the claim proportional to the evidence. If a source reports one remarkable animal, describe that animal; do not silently convert it into a global maximum.
Applying those checks to Roosevelt’s cougar leaves a precise conclusion: it is a historically reported 227-pound animal and a major Boone and Crockett trophy record, while the evidence does not prove the largest live-captured cougar ever.
Why a single number cannot settle every cougar-size question
“Largest” sounds like one simple ranking, but it can refer to several different datasets. A body-weight list might include only living animals handled by researchers. A hunting record may include animals weighed after death. A trophy list may rank skulls, hides or other characteristics under its own rules. Unless the records share definitions, dates, geography and measurement procedures, combining them produces a misleading leaderboard.
The Roosevelt account is especially valuable as a documented historical episode because it gives a named hunter, a location, a date, a reported weight and a trophy score. Its limits are equally important: the source is an organizational historical account, its publication date is not provided in the available record, and it does not supply a standardized global comparison of live captures.

The Boone and Crockett Club identifies With the Cougar Hounds as Roosevelt’s account of the expedition. Readers seeking the period narrative can use that title to locate an edition, checking the publication details because the exact edition and current availability vary. The account offers historical context for the hunt rather than a modern wildlife-measurement protocol.
The most accurate takeaway
If “largest cougar ever caught” means the most prominent historical hunting record, the answer is Roosevelt’s cougar, reported at 227 pounds and killed near Meeker, Colorado, on February 14, 1901. Boone and Crockett records its trophy at 15-12/16 points and says the organization’s world record was surpassed by a Utah hunter in 1964.
If “caught” means captured alive, the available evidence does not identify a definitive world record. The responsible answer is therefore specific rather than absolute: 227 pounds is the reported weight in this historical hunting account, not a proven maximum for every cougar ever captured or weighed.
