The largest published diamond-backed watersnake (*Nerodia rhombifer*) measured 175.3 cm (69 inches). That is a reported range-wide maximum, not a fully documented, named individual: the available species accounts cite the figure but do not provide a specimen number or collection record for the snake behind it.
That qualification matters. A separately documented Kansas female measured 141.5 cm (55½ inches), while ordinary adults are much shorter. The record figure describes what the species is reported to reach at its extreme, not the size you should expect to see beside a pond or river.

The measurements that anchor the record
Several numbers are often mixed together when people search for the largest diamondback water snake ever found. They represent different kinds of evidence: a range-wide maximum quoted by species accounts, normal adult size, a state voucher with a collection date, a state weight record, and an older newspaper-style account of an unusually large snake.

| Measurement | What it represents | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 76.0–122.0 cm (30–48 inches) | Usual adult length | Range given by the Kansas Herpetofaunal Atlas and Florida Museum |
| 141.5 cm (55½ inches) | Largest specimen listed for Kansas | Female KU 204483, Douglas County, collected March 25, 1986 |
| 1,750 g (3 lb 14 oz) | Heaviest Kansas example listed | Female KU 207187, Lyon County, collected May 18, 1987; not a species-wide weight record |
| 149 cm (57 inches) | Older record cited by an Oklahoma author | The author described it as the record known to him at publication |
| Five to six inches above 149 cm | Size of the Lake Texoma snake described in that historical account | Historical context, not proof of the later published maximum |
The Kansas atlas, in its current account accessed in 2026, lists the 175.3-cm maximum throughout the species’ range and cites Boundy (1995) and Powell and colleagues (2016). Florida Museum material independently repeats the 69-inch maximum and the 30–48-inch usual adult range. Missouri’s conservation guide also says that occasional animals reach 69 inches.

Why the 69-inch answer needs a qualifier
A maximum-size summary and a traceable museum voucher are not the same thing. The Kansas account gives the range-wide figure but does not identify the animal that established it. There is no specimen number, collector, locality, or collection date attached to that number in the account available here. It is therefore accurate to call 175.3 cm the largest reported or published length, but not to claim that a named individual has been completely verified from the information supplied.
This distinction does not make the figure useless. Three independent institutional treatments repeat the same exceptional length, and the Kansas atlas identifies the references behind its maximum. It does mean that a careful article should preserve the evidence level whenever it uses the phrase largest ever found. The defensible wording is largest reported diamond-backed watersnake or published maximum for the species.
Range-wide maximum versus a state specimen
The 69-inch figure applies to the species across its range. The 141.5-cm Kansas animal is a particular, catalogued snake from one state. Comparing them answers two different questions: how large the species has been reported to become, and what the largest documented specimen in Kansas measured. The Kansas female is shorter than the range-wide published maximum, but it has stronger specimen-level documentation because its sex, voucher number, county, and collection date are given.
How large are diamond-backed watersnakes normally?
Most adults fall between 76.0 and 122.0 cm (30–48 inches), according to both the Kansas atlas and Florida Museum. Missouri’s guide uses the same 30–48-inch adult range and notes that animals near 69 inches are occasional. In practical terms, a snake at the published maximum would be far outside the ordinary adult size band rather than a representative example of the species.

Length alone can also mislead casual comparisons. A long snake seen stretched along a bank may appear larger than a shorter snake that is tightly coiled, and a defensive animal can change posture repeatedly. The institutional accounts do not provide a single measurement protocol for every figure, so the safest comparison is between the categories the sources actually establish: typical adult, documented state voucher, and reported range-wide maximum.
The best-described large specimen from Kansas
The Kansas Herpetofaunal Atlas identifies a female measuring 141.5 cm (55½ inches) as the largest specimen listed for Kansas. It is catalogued as KU 204483, was collected in Douglas County, and has a collection date of March 25, 1986. Those details make it a voucher-backed state record, not merely an estimate from a photograph or an observer’s memory.
That snake should not be relabeled the largest diamond-backed watersnake ever found. “Largest in Kansas” is a geographic statement, while the species-wide maximum covers the entire range. Keeping the labels separate prevents a well-documented local record from being mistaken for the global published maximum.

The same atlas lists a 1,750-gram (3-pound, 14-ounce) female, voucher KU 207187, as the heaviest Kansas example. It was collected in Lyon County on May 18, 1987. This is a state weight record in the account, not evidence that the species-wide length record weighed that much.

Length and mass answer different biological questions. A heavier snake is not automatically the longest, and a long snake’s mass can vary with body condition, recent feeding, reproductive status, and other factors. Because the source gives no species-wide weight maximum, the Kansas figure should stay attached to its state and voucher qualification.
What the older Lake Texoma account contributes
An Oklahoma Academy of Science journal account from approximately 2008 provides historical context. Writing about a specimen from Buncombe Creek near Lake Texoma, the author said that the record known to him was 149 cm (57 inches) for a female from Reelfoot Lake, Tennessee, and that the Lake Texoma snake exceeded it by five to six inches.
The wording reflects the author’s knowledge at that time. It is not a modern audit of every specimen, and it does not establish the later 175.3-cm summary. Use it to show that exceptionally large snakes were being reported before the current atlas figure, not as a competing species-wide record.

How to identify *Nerodia rhombifer*
The common name is usually written diamond-backed watersnake or diamondback watersnake. The scientific name is *Nerodia rhombifer*. It is a nonvenomous watersnake, not a diamondback rattlesnake. Institutional guides describe a combination of color, pattern, and scale texture that helps distinguish it from other snakes found around water.

Color and pattern
- The Kansas atlas describes a light gray or yellowish-gray body with roughly 30–65 narrow dark bands.
- Louisiana’s wildlife guide describes a pale gray-brown or tan snake marked with dark crossbars.
- The belly is yellowish and may carry irregular dark markings; Missouri’s guide describes dark spots or half-moon marks on the yellow belly.
- The scales are keeled, meaning each scale has a raised ridge rather than a glossy, perfectly smooth surface.
Color can vary with lighting, wetness, age, and individual condition. These descriptions are field-guide characteristics, not a substitute for expert identification from a clear photograph or specimen. A patterned snake near water should not be handled simply to confirm its identity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where the species lives
Diamond-backed watersnakes are associated with freshwater. The Kansas atlas lists rivers, sloughs, ponds, backwaters, and oxbows. Louisiana’s agency guide adds freshwater lakes, marshes, swamps, large streams, and rivers. This habitat list explains why encounters often occur at the edges of still or slow-moving water rather than in dry uplands.
Habitat association is useful for identification, but it is not proof by itself. Many harmless and venomous snakes use wetlands, shorelines, and drainage channels. Pattern, keeled scales, belly markings, and a confirmed locality should be considered together rather than relying on the presence of water alone.
Diet and behavior around people
Louisiana’s guide says the species feeds almost exclusively on fish, with adult prey primarily catfish. That specialized diet helps explain its close association with productive freshwater habitats. The available guides do not support describing the snake as aggressive. Missouri’s conservation account says it may bite if captured, which is a defensive response and a reason to leave it alone.

Nonvenomous does not mean harmless to handle. A large watersnake has strong jaws, can move quickly when restrained, and can be difficult to release without injury to the animal or the person holding it. Observation from a distance is the appropriate response to an unidentified snake on a shoreline.
How to interpret a claimed record sighting
Photographs and reports of very large watersnakes are easiest to evaluate when they preserve context. A useful report should include the location at a broad level, the date, a scale reference that does not distort perspective, and several images showing the full body without forcing it straight. Even then, a visual estimate is not equivalent to a museum measurement.
Questions to ask about a reported length
- Is the number a measured total length or an estimate from a photograph?
- Was the snake stretched naturally, or is the body curved and partly hidden?
- Does the report identify a specimen, voucher, collector, locality, and date?
- Is the figure a range-wide maximum, a state record, a usual adult size, or a historical claim?
- Does the source identify the animal as *Nerodia rhombifer*, rather than another watersnake with a similar pattern?
These checks do not require handling the snake. They simply keep an extraordinary claim in proportion to the evidence attached to it.
Is a diamond-backed watersnake venomous?
No. Missouri’s conservation guide describes the northern subspecies as nonvenomous, and the species is treated in the cited accounts as a watersnake rather than a venomous pit viper. It can still bite if captured, so “nonvenomous” should never be read as an invitation to pick one up.
The name can cause confusion because “diamondback” is also used for diamondback rattlesnakes. The watersnake has dark bands or chainlike markings, keeled scales, and a yellowish, marked belly; it is not a rattlesnake and should not be identified by name alone.
What the record tells us—and what it does not
The published maximum demonstrates that *Nerodia rhombifer* can become an exceptionally large watersnake. It does not tell us how common animals of that size are, where the largest individual lived, how old it was, or what it weighed. The available accounts provide no population statistic and do not name the specimen behind the range-wide maximum.
For readers, the practical conclusion is straightforward: expect an adult in the 30–48-inch range, recognize that a documented Kansas female reached 55½ inches, and treat 69 inches as the highest published species-wide figure rather than as a routine size or a fully traceable individual record.
