The ornate flying snake (Chrysopelea ornata) is the largest-bodied of the five species in the flying-snake genus Chrysopelea. A peer-reviewed comparison found sampled ornate flying snakes measuring up to 92.0 centimeters from snout to vent, a measurement that excludes the tail. That figure describes the largest animal in that study, not a verified global maximum total length.
These snakes do not fly under their own power. They launch from branches, flatten their bodies and undulate through the air to glide between trees. The largest species is not necessarily the best glider: in comparative tests, C. ornata generally performed less well in the air than the smaller paradise tree snake, C. paradisi.

Which species is the largest flying snake?
“Largest flying snake” is a genus-level superlative. It does not mean the largest snake in the world, the longest snake that can leave a branch, or the species with the longest recorded glide. It asks which member of Chrysopelea reaches the greatest adult body size.
John J. Socha and Michael LaBarbera’s 2005 comparative study of two flying-snake species states that the ornate flying snake “reaches the larger adult size of the five species of Chrysopelea.” On that evidence, Chrysopelea ornata is the best-supported answer.

The wording matters because the study measured a sample of animals. A sample maximum is not automatically a species maximum, and a snout–vent measurement is not the same as total length. The most defensible answer is therefore: the ornate flying snake is the largest-bodied flying-snake species, with sampled individuals reaching 92.0 centimeters snout–vent length.
How large is the ornate flying snake?
Snout–vent length (SVL) runs from the tip of the snout to the vent, the opening near the base of the tail. Researchers use it because tails can be difficult to measure consistently and may be damaged or curved. SVL leaves the tail out, so it should never be presented as the snake’s complete nose-to-tail length.

The ranges overlap because species are not defined by one fixed body length. A large C. paradisi can be longer than a small C. ornata. The comparison is about the typical and upper size represented in the study, not a field rule that allows every individual to be identified by a tape measure alone.

At a given body length, ornate flying snakes were generally more massive than paradise tree snakes. A heavier body changes the forces required to stay aloft and helps explain why the largest species was not the strongest performer in the gliding trials.
Why are they called flying snakes if they do not fly?
Flying snakes are gliders. They do not produce powered lift with wings or sustained thrust with flapping limbs. They climb or move to a high perch, launch into open space and use their body as an aerodynamic surface while gravity supplies the initial acceleration.

Launching from a branch
A launch begins with the snake leaving a branch, often headfirst. The glide path initially points steeply downward. As forward speed builds, the path becomes shallower. The 2011 review by Socha reports a minimum recorded glide angle of 13 degrees, illustrating that a snake can travel forward while losing height gradually rather than simply dropping vertically.
Flattening into a lifting shape
Once airborne, the snake expands its ribs and flattens its normally cylindrical body. In cross-section, the flattened body is approximately triangular. This increases the surface presented to the airflow and creates lift, much as a flexible airfoil does, although the snake’s shape and motion are far more complex than a rigid wing.

The snake also makes high-amplitude undulations in the air. Traveling waves move along the flattened body, combining vertical and horizontal motion. This movement helps maintain aerodynamic forces and allows the animal to adjust its trajectory. The 2002 kinematics study of C. paradisi documented directional control even though the snake has no obvious tailplane, rudder or other separate control surface.
What experiments show about lift
An experimental aerodynamics study published in 2014 tested the flattened cross-section of C. paradisi. It found significant lift across the tested angles of attack and a relatively gentle stall region, meaning lift did not disappear abruptly when the model’s attitude changed. The authors also stressed that a simple cross-sectional model cannot explain every feature of a whole, actively undulating snake. The result supports the physical mechanism without claiming that every detail of a glide is solved.
Is the largest flying snake also the best glider?
No. Body size and aerial performance are related but separate biological traits. In the comparative experiments, C. ornata was generally a poorer glider than C. paradisi, despite being the larger-bodied species.

“Better glider” can mean several different things, so a fair comparison has to specify the measurement. Researchers can examine horizontal travel distance, glide angle, sinking speed, horizontal speed and how quickly a snake reaches a shallow trajectory. A species may perform well on one measure and less well on another.

What the cross-species comparison found
- C. ornata individuals were more massive at a given body length.
- The ornate species generally showed poorer gliding performance than C. paradisi in the comparative tests.
- Within C. paradisi, smaller snakes traveled farther, sank more slowly and reached shallow trajectories sooner.
- Body size was associated with undulation amplitude and some speed measures, so size alone cannot explain every difference in flight.
These findings prevent a common mistake: treating “largest” as a synonym for “most aerial.” The longest-bodied species may face greater weight and inertia, while a smaller species may achieve a more favorable combination of lift, drag and body motion.
Where does the ornate flying snake live?
Species in Chrysopelea are native to South and Southeast Asia. Their ranges overlap in parts of this region, but they should not be treated as one species with one uniform distribution.
A regional account in the Bangladesh Red List records C. ornata from multiple forest types, secondary growth, cultivated land and areas near settlements. That account indicates that the species can use altered as well as relatively natural habitats. It also states that total population size was not known.
Those Bangladesh records describe a regional occurrence, not the complete global range. A locality list for one country cannot be expanded into a worldwide distribution without evidence from the other countries where the species occurs.

What is the conservation status of flying snakes?
Conservation labels must be attached to a particular species, geographic assessment and date. They are not interchangeable across the genus.
Ornate flying snake in Bangladesh
The Bangladesh Red List account gives Chrysopelea ornata a regional Least Concern assessment dated 26 February 2015. It is useful evidence for that national assessment, but it does not establish a current global category for the species. The same account notes that population totals were not known.
Paradise tree snake in the IUCN assessment
The IUCN Red List page for Chrysopelea paradisi, not C. ornata, describes a range extending from southern Myanmar and Thailand through parts of Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines. It lists the species as Least Concern and notes a latest assessment in 2022, with an update caveat on the page.
Using the paradise tree snake’s IUCN category as if it applied to the ornate flying snake would be a taxonomic error. The available evidence supports carefully scoped statements rather than one global conservation label for every flying snake.
How should records and superlatives be interpreted?
A body-size claim and an aerial-distance claim are different records. The Guinness World Records entry titled “Most aerial snake” concerns gliding-distance framing for C. paradisi; it does not identify the largest-bodied flying-snake species. A snake that travels farthest is not automatically the heaviest or longest.

Likewise, the 92.0-centimeter figure should not be converted into “the longest flying snake is 92 centimeters.” It is the largest SVL reported among the sampled C. ornata in the 2005 study. The tail is excluded, the sample is not a certified world-record census and the evidence does not establish an absolute global maximum total length.
What makes the ornate flying snake scientifically important?
Chrysopelea offers an unusual example of aerial locomotion in a limbless animal. Socha’s 2011 review notes that flying snakes are the only limbless animals known to glide through air, even though many cylindrical animals move through water. Their solution is mechanical rather than powered: reshape the body, generate lift with a flexible surface and steer by coordinating waves along the trunk.
The ornate species is especially valuable for comparisons because its larger, heavier body lets researchers test how size interacts with gliding. Comparing it with C. paradisi shows that evolution does not optimize one universal “best” snake design. A body that is advantageous for growth or other aspects of life can impose different aerodynamic costs.
Bottom line for the “largest flying snake” question
The ornate flying snake, Chrysopelea ornata, is the largest-bodied member of the five-species flying-snake genus in the strongest comparative evidence available here. The reported upper measurement is 92.0 centimeters snout–vent length in a study sample, not a confirmed total-length world record. It glides by flattening its body and undulating through the air, and its larger size does not make it the best glider.
